A neo noir crime drama that features two odd couples.
DI Jackson Mendy (Babou Ceesay) is a newbie to homicide having transferred from the anti corruption unit. His sidekick, DS Lola Franks (Eve Myles) is not happy with his inexperience, cheery demeanour and that he investigated cops.
They investigate the victim Simon Goodbridge. A man tied up in bed and stabbed in the back of his head. Simon obviously knew the killer. We saw Simon earlier being nasty to a toilet attendant of a nightclub and then he tried to sexually assault the young lady he was with.
The murderers turn out to be the toilet attendant Baba (Dipo Ola) a former child soldier who is also a church warden. Baba comes to the rescue of sex phone like worker Freddy (Hermione Corfield) from the assault, he beats the man unconscious.
Freddy later thanks Baba by asking for a dance. The enigmatic and alluring Freddy finds a way to manipulate both Simon and Baba.
It was an interesting and decent first episode mainly because Baba and Freddy were intriguing. They are not the usual murderous couple but have been drawn together by circumstances.
It is Jackson and Lola who might be out of their league for now. I did think there was some chunkiness about these two. I wondered how did Jackson get moved to homicide with so much inexperience.
