Listen to the dialogue
andrewkempf28 September 2021
For the people who are complaining about this show being boring, you need to actually listen to the words they're saying and not just tune it out. The conversations are all so meaningful. The different perspectives on religion in this show are fascinating. The different characters are fascinating. This is just a genius idea for a show and I'm sad it's only 7 episodes. This particular episode was all around phenomenal. Stunning visual effects, along with a stunning ending.

I agree with another reviewer. Listen to the damn monologues.
lukinsawyer29 September 2021
This show would be awful for someone who is watching while on their phone. You have to actually pay attention. The monologues are thought provoking. So much meaning in them. It had me pondering my own beliefs.

Visceral Masterpiece
tristan_1926 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The acting is out of this world. Everybody is on their A Game. How do you write something so good in its execution ?

By the time the credits roll, my whole body was tense. Of course, Riley knew Erin would go back to save the others after getting proof of his story, but it's still traumatizing. The whole revival scene and Father Paul's speech afterwards had me glued to the screen. Samantha Sloyan embodies Bev like it was nothing, and Millie Gunning is getting young all of a sudden. Truly horrifying episode.

Manipulative, tense, heartbreaking.

And absolutely stellar episode that brings full circle a character ark that - while made me sad to see it end two ep before the the show's conclusion - makes perfect sense and goes to show the perfectly crafted, terrific writing and directing behind this show.

That hymn...
songod-9500326 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When the Titanic was beyond and there was no doubt she was sinking, the band played one final song. It was the hymn "Nearer My God To Thee".

Twice now this show has used the melody, played simply on a piano. Once when Erin and Reilly discussed death, and in this ep when Riley knew he was going to immolate in the sun; in front of Erin. Both times I was brought to tears. The Titanic connection was part of it - the fabulous acting was the other part.

If they keep using this song I will keep crying...

Aside from that, hasn't any of these people who are in the know ever seen a freakin vampire movie?? All the well known cliches are present!

The series just keeps getting better and better, delivering the best hour so far and a shocking surprise that will catch everyone off guard. Better not to tell anything else. You need to see this. All the patience is being well rewarded.

You knew it was coming but it still hurt
samfarrarhome28 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ever since Riley saw the "angel" you knew he would not be able to live with himself as a monster, he already thought he was one from the first episode. If you're a fan of Mike Flanagan you knew that dream was going to be important. Well built and tense episode best of the series so far. This show is right behind Hill House for me.

Another wtf ending
Calicodreamin25 September 2021
Another spectacularly unexpected ending that left my mouth agape. Unfortunately, the other 60 minutes were slow and borderline boring. Amazing acting though, for what it's worth.

If it wasn't for the monologues
alyhammell27 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show is a terrific premise when there isn't a 10 minute monologue by one character or another. Most episodes I find myself spacing out and on my phone because it just gets so boring. Had that been cut out a bit the show would be a solid 8 or 9.

Try not to fall asleep
hinterwinter28 September 2021
Too long dialogues. Long scenes with inconsistent pace. Only first 10 minutes and last 10 are worth in most episodes.

Far from being as good as Haunting of Hill House.

I was not emotionally prepared for this entire episode. Mike Flanagan is a genius and I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight.

Second review to help with potential plot hole question
plaidsharks8 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Hi, saw a review mentioning a plot hole. Paul did not die in the cave, he was only given the miracle juice, same concept as him spiking the communion with it to perform his miracles as he is a miracle in himself. Paul died in the cabin with bev, sturge, the mayor and wife. After that point, he burned. Riley was not only given miracle juice, he also died and was resurrected. That makes the most sense to me & my boyfriend.

2nd time Mike Flannagan gave me goosebumps at end of E5 in one of his series
iruon_itauol15 October 2021
I just wanna say WOW! This episode and one before were powerfull.

But just as in The Haunting of hill house "the bend neck lady" ending gave me goosebumps over my whole body, so did this one!

Im a Mike Flannagan fan by now. He mixes terror with lots of emotion and character development.

Stephen King style.

Outstanding!
kathi-2223614 October 2021
I've been binging this the last two days. At first, I was really put off by the heavy religion stuff, but the King vibe and the writing and the general story were too good to make me stop watching. I'm so glad I've stuck with it, been patient, and really paid attention to the dialogue. The conversations and monologues are the core of the story. They're infuriating and enlightening and keep you on your toes.

And Oh My God, the ending of this episode blew me away even more so than the ending of the previous one.

I'm saving the last two episodes for daylight tomorrow. LOL!

Heartbreaking
vinfrisone29 September 2021
One of the best hours of television I've see in quite some time. Absolutely heartbreaking. Flanagans writing it second to none.

Surprising ending.
Ashitaka13728 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
But Riley kept making poor choices till the very end. He told Erin he loved her yet he chose to traumatize her with his last action; he told her that he knew she would probably turn back and try to save the island's people, yet he didn't even try to help expose the darkness fooling those people; and he also could have sunk that tiny wooden boat with his bursting into flames stunt. I understand that he was tormented by his selfish decision that led to that poor girl's death, but he had a chance at a little redemption by saving other people's lives including his own mother, father, little brother and the woman he claimed to love.

Great acting but overrated episode
karthikkumaravel-525672 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I feel the reviews are paid or whatsoever. Throughout the series everyone's acting was brilliant. I couldn't say the same for story.

If you're following the Haunting series then you know always 5th episode will be the core of the series. Same with this series too.

I don't understand why people say the ending was unexpected. If you really have followed the story, scenes and given utmost importance to the situation then this ending is the perfect and most expected one.

dannylee-7808225 October 2021
What is the meaning of all this... this show is amazing... I've never watched something like this... technically beautiful but also the meaning behind all of its dialogues... I still don't understand and I'm gonna need time to process it.

[6.8] Riley, Riley, Riley...
cjonesas21 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 5: Over 55 minutes of nonsense, endless directed "brain-washing" monologues (mostly) and minimal conversations to reach a two seconds "surprise" ending for someone who just can't handle the "gift" or more precisely can't handle anything.

Very predictable.
mayadafna8 December 2021
Quite baffled by the comments and praise for the episode and show so far. I could see the plot twists coming and was not once surprised or shocked by anything going on in the show. I find most of it to be ridiculous, and have laughed out loud while watching the more "serious" or "shocking" scenes more than once. Sorry, but for me the show is overrated.

Apostle of thee...
sholsterovic6 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Great and very extraordinary view on subject like, what will someone do if he becoming a monster - vampire - bloodsucking fiend, and more if you have a priest telling you god's Angel chosen you to be apostle of thee....like....what...the... It makes me to think a bit again how the bible can be a powerful tool in the hands of an evil man who interpret it incorrect.

Mike did it again, another great episode and the dialog....again extraordinary interpretation of bible from couple of actors, if not all. 9\10.
