A slow burn start.
teiixeiral25 September 2021
I love Flanagan's style. He takes his time and everything is done with intention. The casting is great and believable. The directing and cinematography is atmospheric. The story is well written and full of interesting moments for the viewer to digest.

This is a solid first episode.

Not sure yet

I usually like Mike Flanagan's work and I heard some good things about this show but this episode was a bit too slow for me. The atmosphere is eerie enough and the cast seems good but nothing too special really happened in the episode. We get to know the characters and that's about it. There seems to be some sort of supernatural elements involved like a giant bird, a zombie and unexplained dead cats but nothing especially captivating. I'll give it another chance and hopefully something more exciting will happen in the next episode.

As an animal lover though, I was glad to see the Human Society logo in the credits.

A great start to the series, introduces main characters and gives some background. The storyline is interesting and multifaceted. The vibe is perfectly eerie.

A solid first episode.
Sleepin_Dragon12 August 2022
The small island of St Patrick's has a new priest, a returning resident, and has to deal with a powerful storm.

A solid first episode, I can't say I'm blown away or captivated like some, the issue for me was the pacing, I was expecting a Saturday night run, this was more a Tuesday teatime stroll.

There's definitely something here, there's an interesting set of characters, there's a bizarre mystery, I'm keen to know who the new priest is, and the cat question, that's interesting.

Stunning visuals, it looks fantastic, and it's well acted, I'm not gripped, but I'm intrigued. 6/10.

The acting, the directing is perfect I'm this episode everything is just so good. There is an atmosphere that is just so creepy and unsettling and through the episode there are tiny hints of evil happening in this town.

I love intros like this
dannylee-7808223 October 2021
Preparing for a slow burn and making sure that characters are introduced and developed enough.

It also sets up some potential antagonists with enough tension that you keep looking forward to the next episode.

I also love the setting. A declining isolated island that is one hour away from mainland. Anything could help here and no one would notice. Some of the acting is a little bit unimpressive but totally bearable.

Riley's Storm
tristan_1924 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It is really interesting to explore what goes on in Riley's head, and how he perceives his life. This guy is a compelling character already. Gotta love the interaction he had with Erin.

This is merely an introduction, and yet a real challenge on its own. If you don't understand its purpose (Ah !), let me explain a little bit. You start the series and one of the main premises is that you get to see a man shocked to his core. His view of the world is directed towards a certain way, and everything is shaken down when someone asks why God is taking kids and letting drunk fools live. Zach Gilford embodies the man who is looking for a path to follow, a purpose in life, being kinda lost.

I'm not that invested in the other stuff yet, but then again I really can't judge without knowing the whole picture. As an episode tho, and as for now, it is a solid 7.8/10.

Albatross is bad luck
gedikreverdi30 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The older son of the Flynns was in prison because he killed someone while he was drunk driving and finally he came back home to the island.

The Flynns, the catholic community on the island, the pregnant woman who has come back to the island, the teens smoking pot and seeing cats in the dark, the doctor and her elderly mother, the Muslim sheriff and his son, the Monseigneur who's at the hospital on the mainland and the new pastor with his giant chest, the drunk man who's seeing giant birds and and the storm that washed ashore dead cats. Everything felt really eerie and so Stephen King like one of his latest books Revival although the story doesn't seem to resemble, the feeling reminded me of it several times and that's not a bad thing at all.

An old fashion slow burner that gets under your skin
lareval26 September 2021
A premiere episode that has the ability to introduce you to the characters and the story in a truly engaging, suggestive way. Looks really good and the horrific atmosphere is worthy.

[5.8] The soap bar
cjonesas20 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 1: Slow-burn, uninteresting throughout, soporific storyline, unremarkable acting, suspense near zero together with a muddy flow.

The photography is nice, the "horrific" events bland and so far it's got nothing to show and deliver.

What is shown as suspenseful is just soapy thrill and "horror".

The art of waiting
trokanmariel-1776025 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I began the series, believing in the art of waiting; Erin Greene fulfilled that belief, at the end of the episode, by instructing Riley to believe in the art of waiting.

Naturally enough, this episode and this version of Erin and Riley is now part of a time capsule.

Why the boring music(chorus)? Too much of everthing: christianity, hate to all animals, boring people, christianity, xenophobia and yes, christianity.

When you like all of this, then is this show for you. Ah- yes there's a vampire and you know in the end, who is it. So what? This show is sucking your life out, while you watching it.

Slow but interesting
AvionPrince1625 October 2021
The beginning is pretty slow but quite intriguing. Strange events happening and we wonder what happened. I enjoyed also the characters writing. I need to see more to have a more overview of the show. Sound pretty good now.

Burning the Oil
prophetroastinc3 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So the main thing I would give Midnight Mass, is also the thing I can see people being turned off by. Considering what the series is, the first episode is what a first episode of a series outta be. It's a slow burn showing us the characters, letting us get to know them, and it's all shown first and the finer details are sprinkled in as we go on.

We're not sure what's going on, or if anything is going on, but everything feels a bit weird. Which is very difficult to convey in alot of newer cases of film and limited series. The entire first episode something just feels odd enough that you know things aren't normal, but distant enough that you don't have a real point to bring up against it all.

I can absolutely imagine people going "This show is boring. I'm leaving." Because the way this shows up, I expected the first episode to be about someone being eaten alive in an outhouse and a small town coming together to figure it out in the form of a Who-Dunnit. What you get is a first episode where someone thinks they saw an old guy around and that's the greatest tension in the episode.

Hooked me from the start
heather_lynn_brown2123 October 2021
The opening scene of this series really drew me in. The contrast of the upbeat music over what was actually happening was so good. I'm rewatching all the episodes now to pick all the little details I missed. I've seen some people call it a slow burn. And it is I guess. It takes time to get into what's actually happening. But this episode had me hooked right away. And that's saying a lot. I've been losing interest in most shows I start lately.

Superb Start
XTheXXTruthX1 October 2021
This was a rarity for modern streaming; a slow burn show that is truly engaging.

Very deliberate and meticulous. This first episode serves as a superb introduction to the island and the community that lives there.

The cast is excellent, many of whom most viewers will recommend from elsewhere, including Flannagan's previous series. One dodgy accent aside.

It's really well written with good dialogue and the filming is breathtaking at times, when it comes to showing parts of this beautiful place that sadly doesn't appear to have long left.

Best of all though, this is not edited at at nauseating speed. It allows the scenes to breathe.

I really enjoyed the first episode except for one thing,
gailhrussell9 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
That one thing being there are too many actors that are too young to being playing their character and they are made to look older, way older. Couldn't older actors have been found to play those roles?

Something else that bothered me was one reviewer did not like all of the "Christianity" in the episode. I know people that are not Christians do not know the difference in being a Christian and being a catholic. There is a difference. I know the difference because I was in the catholic church for the first twenty one years of my life because it was forced upon me. Then when I got to know Jesus, I saw the difference in what a Christian is.

Missa da Meia-Noite (2021)

Series

1st Season Episode One - Livro Um: Genesis

I loved this episode and I really love psychological horror, especially Mike Flanagan's productions.

I believe it's the first horror series I've watched on this profile, but I've watched others.

Is it wrong to find the design of the dead girl with broken glass and police lights on her beautiful?

Well, I thought it was pretty cool.

I really love Mike Flanagan's sequence shots, they make the characters more real, just see that in the sequence shot where Kate Siegel leaves the church talking to Riley, if we look back, the extras deliver something to other extras, even the extras have life, they don't just sit around and that's wonderful for me.

Is it wrong to want the dog to bite the religious fanatic? (preferably in a fatal vein in the neck).

Previous Series: Safe (2018)

Episode one of the first season of the Miniseries Missa da Meia-Noite watched on May 11, 2024.

Rating: 10/10.

Terrible! Not up to Netflix Standard
blpkst10 November 2021
What a clunker! Terrible script, over written, over acted boring story. The acting is so deliberate, i.e. Putting trash in the barrel. Is there no paint on the island? Every property is a mess. The church is important to the community yet it hasn't been painted in decades. I don't think I can bear another episode.

The change in location feels like such a big departure from Mike Flanagan's typical shows and movies, but the vibe and look are still undeniably Mike Flanagan. Not a scare-a-minute premiere, and the show probably won't be like that either, but I'm already feeling some high tensions between certain characters and the few scares and extremely odd imagery that was in here were more than enough for me to continue watching.

I really liked this actually. I'm very taken by Riley. I feel really bad for this guy and can already tell he'll likely have one of the more satisfying arcs in the show. Zach Gilford's acting is excellent. I particularly liked his conversing with Erin, played by Kate Siegel.

And the scene where he runs to someone on the beach was legitimately unsettling...

I'm guessing the more religious themes will be more prominent non the rest of the show, but I will say that none of that felt forced or outshined the rest of the plot.

Great start.

questions and unanswered one
keithbcook9 May 2024
Yes this is called by many a 'slow burn' but this is how things should develop giving time to take things in and build tension.

The characters are well thought out and mostly very individual I dislike the H Thomas father as he is so taciturn. Things are brewing and I noticed a girl in a wheelchair at the start; this is no co-incidence right??

There will be a lot of biblical referenced here and I hope I do not get too washed away due to my ignorance on anything religious. As long as it is kept basic, this is fine for me.

I have not watched two more episodes and i was hoping the explanation would be provided: ie

WHAT IS IN THE TRUNK THAT WAS TAPPING BACK???

S1.E1 - Interesting First Episode [8/10]
panagiotis199324 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E1) My Live Reaction / Review for Midnight Mass Season 1 Episode 1 ''Book I: Genesis''. I watched The FaIl of the House of Usher and it was really good so now im gonna watch this one. I didn't know that Flanagan uses the same actors for his shows. This island looks so small. So Riley was in prison for what? Hitting someone with his car or something? I don't know if a show that focuses on such a small community can be good but im gonna give it a chance anyway. Wow something destroyed this cat? What kind of creature could that be? A new priest? That's interesting. I hope that the priest wont be a perv because he looks like a very good dude. Is something going on between Eric and Riley? Riley really needs something to live for, he has no goals and dreams, he looks depressed. I don't see where the plot is heading right now but ill be patient because so far it is good. Overall this episode was good, my rating is 8/10.
