Love animation, always have and always will do. Love it even more actually, with more to appreciate, things noticed through adult eyes that weren't obvious as much when younger and with broader knowledge. That is not to say that there is any bias and saying that everything animated is good, that is further from the truth and the worst of it is terrible, am more than happy to admit that. When younger, there were many personal favourites.
One of those personal favourites was 'Ducktales'. It is another case too of, as said a number of times already regarding the show, of something that captived me as a child and to this day it's among the best shows Disney ever did and have ever done. Making one pine for the classic Disney and the quality of the animated shows they had in the 80s and 90s, as (as cliched as this sounds) they sure don't make them like this anymore. The Disney Channel was one of my favourite channels to watch when younger, can barely watch it now because the quality decline has been so drastic. 'Ducktales' strikes me as a show that is even funnier, more entertaining, more colourful and more inventive as a young adult, with the humour and references more obvious.
Gyro has always been an entertaining character, not one of my favourite recurring 'Ducktales' supporting characters but have never had any problem with him. While liking to loving all of Gyro's episodes, "Sir Gyro De Gearloose" in my mind is one of his best episodes, as a supporting character or Gyro-centric (the latter here). It was great to have it play to all of Gyro's strengths as a character, while not overdoing any of his traits, and more importantly making him more fun and compelling. Found him and his dilemmas oddly rootable.
"Sir Gyro De Gearloose" is marred only, hence one point deducted, by the transition from Duckburg present to medieval past being ever so slightly clumsily done.
However, really loved what "Sir Gyro De Gearloose" did with the story. On paper, the concept is a pretty familiar one and there is the inevitable worry of whether anything new would be done with it. Luckily, the episode never struck me as a predictable one, it uses its handsomely and vividly rendered medieval setting cleverly, boasts colourful supporting characters (with names that cause some charming amusement) and has some nice surprises and twists on formula. What also makes "Sir Gyro De Gearloose" one of the best Gyro episodes and near-classic 'Ducktales' is the climax, one of the show's best ever scenes because it is tremendously exciting and boasts some of the most inventive and quite ingenious use of magnets seen anywhere.
The music again shines, dynamic, beautifully orchestrated, never jarring with the action and full of energy. Disney had many theme songs that were difficult to resist and were very catchy to the extent one doesn't forget them, and that for 'Ducktales' to me was one of the best. As one expects the writing has wit and is very smart, the episode making the most of its setting.
Despite really liking Gyro here, how Huey, Duey and Louie are written and their chemistry, the supporting cast are every bit as good. Morloon stands out the most, while the writers had an equal amount of fun with Lessdred. Arty is ever so slightly bland but not in a way to bring anything down. The voice acting is on point, with Russi Taylor having the most characters to fill and doing so expertly but the most fun contributions come from Hal Smith and Peter Cullen.
