'Ducktales' in Australia
TheLittleSongbird20 March 2019
Have said many times about being someone who adores animation. Always have done from a very young age, my introduction to it being Disney films such as 'Cinderella' and 'Peter Pan'. Always will do, due to appreciating animation even more as a young adult having over-time garnered more knowledge and getting acquainted with other studios and animation directors and their output.

One of the primary examples of all the above is 'Ducktales'. 'Ducktales' was a personal favourite growing up, having always loved the animation, the theme tune, the characters and its vast entertainment value in the writing and storytelling. Do feel though that generally the earlier episodes are better than the later ones, more refined animation, better supporting/re-curring characters that weren't given too much prominence and being funnier. Have found a lot in animation re-watched recently through adult eyes that there is more to like and appreciate and the writing is cleverer and funnier, with any references being easier to get. Again 'Ducktales' is one of the primary examples of that.

"Back Out in the Outback" is a nice and enjoyable enough episode and it was great to see a different and more exotic location, it doesn't disgrace the show at all and re-watching it it was a good way of temporarily stopping my increasing stress and anxiety recently and made me happy and relaxed. 'Ducktales' has been very good at that in general, likewise with animation as an overall whole. That feeling didn't last for long sadly, being an on and off target of inexplicable review abuse (despite being told to stop) which struck again last night, and now, and sent my anxiety through the roof. Having said that, moving on to more relevant things, there are episodes that do a better job representing what makes the show so great.

The biggest problem of "Back Out in the Outback" is that for my tastes it tended to be a little too much on the cute side. Something that is not really what 'Ducktales' is all about and it felt out of character. Webby and her involvement in the episode is the main reason why as to why that is. Am a long way from being a Webby detractor, actually have never had a major problem with her. It's just that there is too much of her in the episode, while more interesting characters are not as prominent.

Charm and endearment is admittedly seen, if not always consistently, in her involvement in the episode, which is far from pointless. The problem was that there were too many sweet if too cute in places moments of the bonding and love of animals and they went on for too long.

On the other point of view, the animation is very good still. It is bright and colourful with lively fluid movement, smooth drawing and meticulous attention to detail in the backgrounds. The music again is dynamic and beautifully orchestrated, never jarring with the action and full of energy. Disney had many theme songs that were difficult to resist and were very catchy to the extent one doesn't forget them, and that for 'Ducktales' to me was one of the best.

Much of the writing is funny and smart and the story is still compelling with plenty of engaging moments. The warthog chase especially was exciting, while there is a good deal of energy and an admirable attempt of emotional depth. The regular characters are handled very well in the episode, all serve a purpose in "Back Out in the Outback" with lots to do, good chemistry with each other and all are in character. Launchpad has always been an amusing and likeable character and it is still amazing that Huey, Duey and Louie are so distinct in personality that it is easy to tell them apart, love their classic golden age cartoons with Donald Duck but 'Ducktales' does a better job characterising them. The voice acting is strong, Russi Taylor showing her immense talent at voicing multiple characters and giving them individuality.

Altogether, a nice episode but a little too cute and not one of the best of 'Ducktales'. 7/10
