The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series »

How Denzel Washington Got Even Badder For The Book Of Eli

17 hours ago | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

So after the fine, fine, pre-Xmas entertainment that was “Avatar”, we now turn our Sci-Fi attentions to the next big Sci-Fi flick coming our way in the form of  the grim, dusty, post enlightened civilization road movie, “The Book Of Eli”, starring our man Denzel Washington as a high plains drifter firm and fully packed with the skills and hardware required to lay down the law on all those radiated, diseased or just plain mal-adjusted enough to want to take what Denzel has sworn to protect. I’ve got a nice behind the scener for you illustrating in interview and clips just how Denzel (now 55) got himself trained to Ninja his way through as many as 16 guys at once. As the vid explains, some so called action heroes pound one guy then the scene gets cut, action hero sips a latte or two, fondles an extra, then moves on to the next victim. »

Things Get Violent In The Book Of Eli Featurette

24 December 2009 3:27 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The Book of Eli looks okay, but it.s hard to get excited for something that looks like any old post-apocalyptic film featuring batches of overly violent men in desperate need of a shower. I was hoping this new featurette from Yahoo! Movies would be the item to make me think otherwise, but all it does is enhance my original sentiment. It focuses on the stunts in the film, particularly Denzel Washington.s superhuman ability to learn the choreography. Director Allen Hughes points out that shooting the fight scenes are far more complicated than landing a single punch. Washington had to keep swinging for a full minute. Um, is this something new? The battle scenes do look impressive, but no more spectacular than anything else we.ve seen. Hopefully Warner Bros. can cram in another featurette or a fresh trailer before the January 15th release. »

New Behind-the-Scenes Featurette on the Fight Scenes in The Book Of Eli

24 December 2009 12:36 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A behind-the-scenes video detailing the stunts, particularly the fight sequences, in the Hughes Brothers’ upcoming The Book of Eli recently popped up on Yahoo! Movies. Basically, it’s 2 ½ minutes of directors Albert and Allen Hughes, star Denzel Washington, and stunt coordinator Jeff Imada (fight coordinator for the last two Bourne flicks) talking about standard stuff like the intensity of the sequences and how amazing Denzel was at learning the techniques/doing his own stunts. Toward the end, they also get into some semi-interesting analysis of Eli’s fighting style and how it relates specifically to the character and his motivation. If you check out the vid, you might also catch a few non-behind-the-scenes clips that weren’t in the trailers.

Over the years, I’ve learned to be wary of high-concept actioners, but The Book of Eli is one I’m really looking forward to. It’s got a pair »

23 December 2009 4:17 PM, PST | GordonandtheWhale | See recent GordonandtheWhale news »

One thing I’m looking forward to in 2010 is Denzel Washington as Eli, the lone warrior in a post-apocalyptic world who carries a sacred book that’s the key to saving mankind. That sacred book is also a hot item along the people in the film we call bad guys. I’m so antsy to watch Denzel kicks some ass, that we’re throwing a screening of The Book Of Eli in Dallas and we want you there! For your chance to win passes, all you have to do is fill out the form after the jump. On Monday, January 11th, we will randomly select and announce the winners.

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

trailer break: ‘The Book of Eli’

21 December 2009 1:27 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

I heard a word on The Colbert Show last week that I’d never heard before, but the instant I heard it, I knew I loved it. That word is afterscape. I love learning new words, because now I can say this: The afterscape in the Hughes Brothers’ new postapocalyptic thriller The Book of Eli looks awfully familiar. Can’t someone invent a new end of the world? Why does it all have to end in ways that we already know? Surely we could get, I dunno, a green apocalypse, wherein some Gaia-loving mad scientist unleashes a mutant virus that turns everything into plants... except for the last stragglers of humanity who have so far managed to avoid getting triffidized. I mean, really: Must the apocalypse be so gray and dusty? Also: You’d think that whatever stupid thing we did that caused the apocalypse -- like punching a hole »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

Besides being pretty cool, the TV spots do show some never before seen footage. I for one am sold on the look of the film, and can only hope that the recent buzz I've heard, which isn't great, is more rumor than truth. Anywho, check out one of the TV spots below. »
