The final episode of series one. The new Australian owner of the newspaper is flexing his muscles as to what can and cannot be printed.

Lytton's interest is piqued when some right wing youths are causing havoc in a small village and they seem to spend a lot of time in a manor house. Lord Henry Rimmer looks to be indulging this rabble who are being trained by a disgraced former army instructor called Maxim. Lytton had previously written about Maxim and he thinks exposing Rimmer as a funder of a far right, racist party is certainly newsworthy.

The trouble his that Lytton's colleagues have already been threatened by the mob, he puts himself in danger and Lord Rimmer is confident that he can bring pressure on the new owner that the story will never be published. It all depends on the crusty editor and how much he feels like rebelling with the Australian mogul. Maurice Roeves plays Maxim and he always used to play these rogue military types. This would all change a year later when he gets a role in the BBC series Tutti Frutti.

Lytton's Diary never managed to grab the immediacy of the newspaper world in its first series although this episode wanted to be more grimy and deal with the serious issue of racist thugs and their well heeled backers.
