I have to say the theme tune is very nice, composed by Rick Wakeman. It is more memorable than some of the episodes.

An old friend from the middle east gives Lytton a tip about a crooked politician doing some shady deals to get around an embargo against a middle eastern country run by religious zealots.

Lytton takes the story at face value and does not question why he has been given such a scoop on his lap.

The editor and the newspaper lawyer realise that they have to tread carefully. They decide to drip feed the story to see how the politician reacts.

Pretty soon Lytton becomes the story in a satirical magazine after he has an encounter with a woman who turns out to be a high class hooker. Lytton knows he has been set up as he was feeling lonely on his birthday. The new proprietor expects better moral conduct from his journalists and Lytton finds himself to be a figure of ridicule with his job on the line.

For a diary columnist, Lytton can be a tenacious investigative journalist. He can be fair but he also has a vicious bite if crossed.

Some of the plot frankly did not make sense, it probably is not worth thinking about too deeply as it verged on the ridiculous.
