I Love 1983

Not to give my age away but back in the day I could do a mean impression of Roland Rat.

The rat who saved a sinking ship presents whatever went on in 1983. The show wisely stays away from Mrs Thatcher's landslide election victory for making most of the north of Britain unemployed.

Broadcast in 2001, it is noticeable how some of the talking heads have fared less better than those people who made the news in 1983.

It was the year of colourful legwarmers, the Sloane rangers, Wham, breakdancing and Just 17 magazine.

I liked the fact that Peter York wrote about Sloane rangers in a mocking way and the Hooray Henry's took it ever so seriously.

It is always nice to see Jeff Daniels from Shalamar doing the moonwalk, months before Michael Jackson did it.

As for Wham. I think Stuart Maconie got it right. George Michael was more fun when he was in Wham. He became a bit of a bore when he went solo and all serious. I actually saw him in concert on a wet Saturday in Manchester once. If only he sang a Wham song, it would had made it a bit more enjoyable.
