Top 7 Movies That Make The End of the World Sound Hilarious

13 November 2009 2:18 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

Somehow, the end of the world has become a form of entertainment. Instead of being scared out of our wits of apocalyptic thoughts, we enjoy plunking down $10 to watch them become realized by big budget blockbusters. Hollywood serves it up, however: whole cities are destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people die, the fate of mankind is brought into question, and sometimes, Randy Quaid becomes our savior.

Which brings us to a certain theme that has been continued through a legacy of doomsday movies – they’re funny as hell. More unintentional than not, these movies are loaded with goofy movie milestones that make the blockbusters seem like gargantuan scaled jokes, with their characters, dialogue, and special moments serving as a type of punch line. Many disaster movies seem to be plagued by an air of idiocy that moves from one big budget movie to the next, »

The Box

7 November 2009 7:34 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

The Box

Directed by: Richard Kelly

Cast: Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella

Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: November 6, 2009

Plot: A financially desperate couple (Diaz, Marsden) is randomly presented with a box – inside the box is a simple red button. However, there is a catch – if they press the button, they will be awarded one million dollars. At the same time, someone in the world that they don’t know will be killed.

Who’S It For? Like the title object’s existence, The Box is a film made for the curious: those curious to see how the Donnie Darko director does with a mainstream budget, or those curious to see how the film should be placed in a list of this year’s bad-funny movies. Fans of psychological thrillers might want to take a gander, but at their own risk.

Expectations: Imagine a trailer that has »

Ang Lee May Adapt Life of Pi

3 November 2009 2:48 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

After the box office disappointment of his last movie, Taking Woodstock, director Ang Lee is apparently looking to adapt an award-winning novel from Canada next. Averaging one feature every two years since The Hulk in 2003, Lee said that his next project "is two years ahead," but he told Digital Spy that he has a story in mind.

I think I'm going to do Life of Pi. A little boy adrift at sea with a tiger. It's a hard one to crack.

Written by Yann Martel and originally published in 2001, Life of Pi tells the story of Piscine "Pi" Molitor Patel, a young Indian boy stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a Bengal tiger named "Richard Parker." The British edition of Life of Pi won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction the year after its release, and M. Night Shyamalan (The Happening »

Cinematical Seven: Good Actors in Bad Horror

27 October 2009 9:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I'm sure Peter Sarsgaard didn't intend to make a horror movie that would provoke gales of unintentional laughter. Yet in a key, emotionally-wrought scene near the end of Orphan -- out on DVD today and, perversely enough, worth a rental -- that's exactly what happens; by that point, the film's determination to take itself way too seriously has worn down the viewer, and its lunatic premise collapses upon itself. Sarsgaard bravely goes down with the ship, as does Vera Farmiga, two talented actors that were better than their material.

How do good actors end up in bad movies? The same way some of us end up in jobs we hate: (1) It sounded better than it turned out; (2) Gotta pay the bills. Sometimes they liven up the movie (The Devil's Advocate wouldn't be nearly as much fun without Al Pacino's self-parodying scenery-chewing) and sometimes they look befuddled that they ended up »

Details on Shyamalan Story ‘Devil’

19 October 2009 5:17 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Last year, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan worked out a deal with Media Rights Capital to turn three of his original ideas into screenplays.  But here’s the twist, Shyamalan won’t be writing the script or directing the movie, just tossing out the premise that will become the thriller and then producing.

The first of those ideas is titled Devil and has been expanded into a screenplay by Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy).  Until this week we didn’t know much about the project, other than it will be directed by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle.  Luckily, Slashfilm has uncovered a few juicy tidbits that should shed some light on the story Shyamalan imagined.

Obviously, there will be spoilers beyond this point:

Devil is basically a supernatural thriller set inside of an office building. There are some people stuck in an elevator, and one of them »

M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Devil’ Headed for the Screen [Updated]

16 October 2009 8:48 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

[Update: We've now have a synopsis about the plot of Devil]

M. Night Shyamalan is one of those divisive directors in Hollywood - not because of politically controversial film topics like say Michael Moore, or over-the-top art house edge like Lars von Trier. He doesn’t even make it into the mainstream news media spouting off-hand remarks, or getting picked up while driving drunk, flinging anti-Semitic racial slurs. No, Shyamalan divides audiences into those that love his work and those that don’t because of his story telling; there’s no real fence-riding when it comes to his films.

Shyamalan’s next story, Devil, a horror-thriller, is being backed by Universal and directed by brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine) with actor Chris Messina (Julie and Julia) attached to star. Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) wrote the script based on Shyamalan’s story, the details of which are being kept a tightly guarded secret. I’m not really sure »

Chris Messina is Shyamalan’s Devil

16 October 2009 6:27 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Chris Messina, recently seen in Away We Go and Julie & Julia, has been signed to star in Devil, based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan (cue warning bells) and directed by Quarantine co-helmers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle.

I’m endlessly surprised by how quickly a film can go into production after a casting decision is made: filming for Devil will start ten days from now, in Toronto, Canada. The film is a product of Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital’s “Night Chronicles,” which will produce one horror-suspense genre film a year. I don’t know if this means they’ll all be from the mind of Shyamalan, but I doubt it.

Brian Nelson, the writer of 30 Days of Night, wrote the script, which is being kept under tight wraps — likely because there’s some sort of twist involved!

We’ll see if Shyamalan’s production deal pans »

The Devil Is Due For M. Night Shyamalan

16 October 2009 5:14 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Forget “The Happening” for a second and lets remember that when director M. Night Shyamalan gets it right, he Really gets it right. So here’s hoping his writing skills are as good as his directing skills because Universal Pictures have just cast Chris Messina to star in Devil, a new horror-thriller based on a Shyamalan story.

Shyamalan will join Sam Mercer as producer on the picture, which is the first in a three picture deal struck between the hit-and-miss director and Media Rights Capital to create “Night Chronicles“, a series of genre pieces being released over a period of – you guess it, three years!

According to Variety:

Brian Nelson (”30 Days of Night”) wrote the script. The Dowdles will be exec producers.

Plot’s being kept under wraps, but sources said Messina plays the lead role of Bowden, a sobered-up homicide detective. Messina most recently starred in “Julie and Julia” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona. »

Wahlberg to Remake Iceland Thriller

6 October 2009 2:18 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

Mark Wahlberg is such an interesting person to watch on screen. It's no secret he's tough, but his soft voice throws you for a loop.

"Say hello to your mother for me."

Hilarious.

I was watching The Happening the other day and couldn't get over how compassionate (and weak) this usually-tough guy can sound. Maybe he didn't like the impression he left with that one either, as he's returning to a more tough-guy thriller.

Mark Wahlberg for Reykjavic-Rotterdam Remake

Looking to Iceland, Working Title Films are working to remake Reykjavic-Rotterdam. Baltasar Kormakur, who starred in the film, and produced it and owned remake rights, will direct the remake off a script by Aaron Guzikowski. »

The Crazies Remake Trailer Starring Timothy Olyphant

2 October 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Well I can already tell that Breck Eisner's The Crazies is probably going to get accused of looking too similar to various other movies, in particular, M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening... and that comparison is certainly not doing it any favours. It also could be classified as a zombie movie of sorts, but of course, it's not the undead kind, it's the violent infection kind, a la 28 Days Later or The Signal. The fact that it is a remake of a George A. Romero movie is probably only going to increase the use of the Z-word. Putting all of that aside, does the first trailer for The Crazies look decent? I'd have to say, yes it does. What I like about the original is the fact that it focuses on survivors trying to stay alive in a town that has been quarantined by the military. This seems to be staying true to that, »

New Set Photos & Videos From ‘The Fighter’

23 September 2009 11:31 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Three weeks ago, video blogs and pictures from the set of David O Russell’s The Fighter were posted by a user called “The Fighter” on IAmRogue. The only problem was that nobody knew about their existence, so you might not have heard anything about it. Until now, that is.

If you remember a couple of months ago, a photo was released showing an emaciated Christian Bale walking around on set. Now, for those interested, you have a veritable treasure trove of photos and videos for your perusing.

Check them out:

The Fighter centers around professional boxer Micky Ward (Wahlberg) in a real life Rocky-like story. With the help of his half-brother, Dickie Edlund (Bale), whom is a former boxer-turned-trainer and recovering drug addicted goes on to battle Arturo Gotti in three separate fights, two of which have been called the greatest matches in the history of the sport.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at The Lovely Bones

18 August 2009 1:55 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Mark Wahlberg is an actor whose performances have ranged from terrific (Three Kings, The Departed) to downright embarrassing (Max Payne, The Happening) so we're pretty interested in seeing how things turn out for him in Peter Jackson's upcoming The Lovely Bones. While we wait, how about a behind-the-scenes peek into the production?

The story centers on a young girl, Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), who has been murdered and watches over her family - and her killer - from heaven. She must weigh her desire for vengeance against her desire for her family to heal. Along with Wahlberg, the cast includes Rachel Weisz as his wife and Susan Sarandon as Susie's Grandma Lynn.

‘Prisoners’ Finds a Buyer

29 July 2009 8:46 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Alcon Entertainment has purchased the spec script Prisoners, a kidnapping thriller set in a small Massachusetts town.  After shelling out north of a million dollars for the rights, the company plans to fast track the movie for an October 2010 release through Warner Bros.

The script tells the story of a carpenter who takes matters into his own hands after his daughter and her friend are kidnapped.  He captures the man he believes is responsible while police track down potential suspects.

THR is reporting Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale are no longer attached in the $30-40 million budget.  They would have played the carpenter protagonist and a police detective respectively.  Bryan Singer was also set up to direct at one point, but will no longer be involved.  Alcon is actively searching for new talent.

I had a chance to read this, which is considered one of the hottest scripts in the industry right now. »

(500) Days of Summer Review

(500) Days of Summer Directed by: Marc Webb Written by: Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Clark Gregg, Geoffrey Arend, Matthew Gray Gubler The term "romantic comedy" is not particularly well-regarded nowadays, thanks to years of formulaic and sappy love stories manufactured specifically as light entertainment for couples who are out on a date. But movies about relationships don't always have to be cheesy and predictable. Take Marc Webb's directorial debut, (500) Days of Summer, for instance. It's an amusing movie about falling in and out of love that certainly doesn't play by the rules of your standard rom-com. The movie has a unique take on the life cycle of love, jumping back and forth through time to examine the various stages of a relationship removed from their chronological sequence. It's a clever and intriguing concept, and one that is supported by two fantastic actors. Unfortunately, »
