Serpico: From Real to Reel (2002)

*** (out of 4)

Nice, ten-minute featurette features interviews with SERPICO director Sidney Lumet and producer Martin Bregman. In this featurette we take a look at how Bregman wanted to start producing and a friend brought the book to his attention. From here he talked to Pacino who was interested in the film and then they went to Lumet. Lumet talks about his ideas for the movie and what both he and Bregman wanted the film to tell a story and not deal with the politics of the situation. From here we get a rather funny story about the real Serpico being involved with the pre-production but then having his heart broken when Lumet told him he couldn't be around the set because it would be a distraction to Pacino. This was the first of three featurettes produced for the DVD and it's a pretty good introduction. It's still way too short to cover a lot of details but it does a nice job at filling you in on the events leading up to the shooting of the picture. Obviously, the lack of Pacino being interviewed takes away but what's here is still worth watching by fans.
