Glee and Breaking Bad top the Satellite Awards

22 December 2009 6:01 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

The winners of 2009 Satellite Awards were announced on Sunday in Los Angeles, and when you look at the winners on the television side, you have to like the choices. Most of these shows and actors have been on our year-end "best" lists, and if I were to guess, I think you'll see many of these names on the Prime time Emmy nomination roster.

The first thing that jumped out to me was Glee. The Fox musical dramedy was a winner in five different categories, including actors Jane Lynch, Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison and Kristin Chenoweth -- for her guest role -- recognized. And the show was named Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical.

'Glee' Is Big Winner at 14th Satellite Awards

21 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

"Glee" is splashed all over 14th Annual Satellite Awards winners list. The new musical show by Fox has dominated the 14 categories in television by winning five of them including Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical. The leading cast, Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele, have also won in the Best Actor and Actress of Comedy or Musical categories respectively.

In the drama genre, it is "Breaking Bad" that triumphs. Beside being named Best Drama Series, the AMC show takes a nod through Bryan Cranston as Best Actor in Drama. Another double winner is TV movie "Grey Gardens" which victory also owes it to Drew Barrymore.

Winners were selected by the members of International Press Academy (Ipa) and were announced in a gala ceremony held at InterContinental Hotel in Century City on Sunday, December 20. Beside announcing winners in television, Ipa also grants winners in movie, DVD and video games.

Emily Blunt Failed to Secure Her Double Satellite Awards Noms

21 December 2009 7:45 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Emily Blunt has impressed critics with her performance on both "The Young Victoria" and "Sunshine Cleaning", leading to her being nominated for two 2009 Satellite Awards titles. When the winners of the awards were announced however, it was unraveled that she has lost to Shohreh Aghdashloo and Mo'Nique.

On Monday, December 21, the International Press Academy made public Shohreh Aghdashloo bested Blunt in the category for Best Actress in Drama, and Mo'Nique stole her chance at securing Best Supporting Actress title. While she failed to add her award collection, her co-star in "The Devil Wears Prada" Meryl Streep took home Best Actress in Comedy/Musical honor for her performance in "Julie & Julia".

The 26-year-old was not the only double-nominated actress who walked away with no kudo. Her fellow competitor Penelope Cruz has to admit defeat as well. Nonetheless, both of Cruz' movies nailed at least one award. "Broken Embraces" was in tie »

Best and Worst TV of 2009: Allison's list

20 December 2009 6:24 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

What a year! Once we got over the WGA strike, the networks kicked it into high gear and got busy making TV. Except for NBC. Even Jeff Zucker has admitted that NBCU has failed to respond to the need for new programming.

Fortunately, the other channels have been busy and there's been a lot of great television... and some that's just plain awful. But I'm a half-glass full kind of person and I have good feelings about 2009. However, since I don't want to repeat my list from last year, I'll just mention that I could put these 2008 best choices -- Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, NCIS, The Big Bang Theory and Mad Men -- on my list again. But I'm going to go for an all new list and, thankfully, I had plenty of 'bests' to choose from.

Best and Worst TV of 2009: Joel's list

19 December 2009 11:04 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

I don't think I did one of these lists last year, and I have no idea why. The election all by itself would have generated a pretty fun best/worst list. Maybe we were all suffering from information overload, and were just exhausted. Not sure.

But 2009 had a lot of interesting TV, too, just not all in one category. As I've done in the past, I'll dispense with the usual "best show" and "worst show" lists and just make up categories:

Goodness

Best comeback from a shaky first season: Parks and Recreation. As I mentioned in my "return of the sitcom" story, Parks and Rec has made the biggest improvement from first season to second since... well, since The Office. It's no coincidence; Greg Daniels and Mike Schur's Office experience taught them that patience would be rewarded, both on the part of the writers and the viewers.

The Walking Dead– Compendium Volume One | Image Comics

Written by Robert Kirkman |  Art by Charlie Adlard, Cliff Rathburn, and Tony Moore

This is how it starts. Life is normal. The days go by. The night puts us to sleep. And then we wake up and realize we’re surrounded by zombies. In an instant, your enemies are your friends, and some of your friends become enemies. People around the country are opening up and adapting to a new beginning; a place where you have to survive and to do so, by looking over your shoulder every five minutes. Because if you don’t, a zombie just might make a breakfast out of you.

Before the New Year brings in a new decade of technological advancement, celebrity scandal, and one hit wonders, fans of zombies need to make a quick pit stop to the local bookstore or online seller for The Walking Dead »

I'm told that Carol Kravitz, the production coordinator of the cable TV show Breaking Bad, just launched a holiday giving campaign on the Production Coordinators' 411 Google group. Working members of her Local 871 made contributions to pay the minimum Ia dues of those other members experiencing difficult financial times. Already, Kravitz's campaign has raised over $3,000 in 2 days from both Local 871 members and others to cover the $54.35 dues of over 50 members. »

List of 16th Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominees

17 December 2009 5:27 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Next year's list of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations puts three films and three television shows under three categories. In terms of number, critics' choice "Up in the Air" is battling it out with "Inglourious Basterds" and "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" while "30 Rock" gets heavy competition from "Dexter" and "The Closer".

The nominees that were read out on Thursday, December 17, also revealed that several actors receive multiple nominations. In motion picture category, Penelope Cruz earns two for starring in "Nine". In television, Tina Fey scores also two for being the lead of "30 Rock". Her co-star Alec Baldwin is also having two chances to walk away with an award.

SAG Nominations

17 December 2009 3:10 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The precursors have been squeezed into an unusually small period this year. The Globes, Bfca, Nyfcc, Lafca and SAG all announced in the space of one week. That's not business as usual. I guess this is one way to squeeze out all those regional critics groups because... who will care now? What does all this mean for Oscar? Generally clear consensus between the major precursors means that Oscar will be nearly a carbon copy. But with an unusual amount of time between the actors announcement and the announcement of Oscar nominations (Still more than a month away) it Might mean that Academy voters react to and against these lists, rather than along with them if you know what I mean. Do you know what I mean?

Screen Actors Guild Nominations Announced

The morning the Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for the 16th annual SAG awards. The actual ceremony will be held Saturday, January 23rd. There are a lot of gay-faves on the list of nominees.

For starters, Colin Firth picked up a nomination for A Single Man,and Sigourney Weaver is in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries thanks to Prayers for Bobby.

Freshmen series Glee and Modern Family are competing against each other for Beest TV Comedy Ensemble.

And surprisingly (at least for me) the cast of True Blood is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

You can check out the full list of nominess after the break!

Did the SAG Television Nominations Redeem Poor Golden Globe Choices?

17 December 2009 9:50 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

The SAG television nominations may seem trivial when compared to the Golden Globes (which seem trivial in comparison to the Emmys and the Oscars, which both seem trivial in comparison to the work), but the 2009 honorees include a bunch of actors and TV shows shafted by the Hollywood Foreign Press. The biggest redeeming nomination: Bryan Cranston's work on Breaking Bad. But after the jump, we outline where the SAGs differed from the Globes, including the new drama that landed a big nomination for Best Ensemble Cast, and the minimal love for the cast of Glee. »

Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations Announced

17 December 2009 8:57 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Causing a yawn followed by sad resignation, this year’s Screen Actors Guild Award nominations are unimaginative and a depressing indicator of what we could be seeing when the Oscar nominations are announced on February 2nd.  There’s not a single nominee that surprises.  Even the out-of-left-field Best Supporting Actress nomination of Diane Kruger for Inglourious Basterds feels more like a comment on the lack of good roles for actresses rather than an attempt to bring attention to an overlooked performance.

SAG Awards Nominations Led By 'Up In The Air,' 'Precious'

'Inglourious Basterds,' '30 Rock' also score big nominations.

By Eric Ditzian

George Clooney in "Up in the Air"

Thursday morning's nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards have confirmed what has become increasingly clear since the Golden Globe noms two days earlier: Films like "Up in the Air" and "Precious" are the indisputable favorites heading into the peak of awards season.

Both of those films, as well as Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," racked up three nods each, followed by the likes of "The Hurt Locker" and "Nine," each with two. With just five motion picture categories — including an Outstanding Performance by a Cast in place of the more traditional recognition for best film — no one movie dominated the results.

The films recognized for their casts are "An Education," "Hurt Locker," "Basterds," "Nine" and "Precious." Save for "Education," all of these films were recognized in a Best Motion Picture category at the Globes. »

Screen Actors Guild award nominations for TV

17 December 2009 8:33 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Every day it seems that we have nominations to announce. Yes, we are in award season and today it's the Screen Actors Guild's turn. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 8 p.m. on TNT and TBS, the winners of the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will air live from Los Angeles. Here's the nominees in the main categories and some thoughts on each:

Drama Ensemble: The Closer; Dexter; The Good Wife; Mad Men; True Blood

Interesting that CBS's The Good Wife made the cut, especially over Lost or House or Breaking Bad or Sons of Anarchy or Damages or Friday Night Lights. And I love The Closer, but the inclusion here is a surprise. I guess NCIS would be too big a surprise to get recognized.

Comedy Ensemble: 30 Rock; Curb Your Enthusiasm; Glee; Modern Family; The Office

The 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations are Here

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning just two days after the 2010 Golden Globe Nominations giving us plenty to chew on heading into the weekend. As for surprises I can say there are really only a couple.

First off, one nod that's not really a surprise is the one that went to Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker, most likely edging out Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine. Considering we are talking about actors nominating actors this seems about right. However, Diane Kruger getting a nomination for her performance in Inglourious Basterds is a bit of a surprise, especially as she's beating out her co-star in that film Melanie Laurent, not to forget Marion Cotillard in Nine, both performances I believe are more deserving. Don't expect Oscar to follow suit with that choice.
