"Family Guy and Star Wars-Truly funny"
sexystarwarslover27 February 2008
When i first heard that Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy and American dad was doing a Family Guy Star Wars episode entitled "Blue Harvest" i thought 'oh this is too funny and i have to see this' and after many months, i finally got to see it, but not on TV but brought the DVD just this month and i could not stop laughing! Being a Star Wars fan first before i was a fan of Family Guy, i knew the Star Wars movies well and after seeing Family Guy episodes, i knew it would be full of gags and laughs, "I sited my pants" Stewie as Darth Vader says to Lois as Leia and Adam West as Tarkin and having Herbert as Obi Wan Kenobi was truly well casting as Chris was Luke Skywalker. i thought having Cleveland as R2 was very original and funny, lines like, "Yeah! that's how we do it in my neighborhood, b*****!" or Peter as Han Solo, "Oh you mean that thing you just found out about three hours ago and are now judging me for not believing in it?"

The DVD contains scenes that were not on the television broadcast, that i did not know about until the commentary pointed out, which goes through all the details that went into making the story, including guest stars of the episode, not to mention features such as "The making of Blue Harvest" "A conversation with George Lucas" "Family Guy Star Wars clip show", it's amazing to see how many Star Wars gags are in the episodes and an "Introduction to Family Guy".

If you love Star Wars and Family Guy, then this is for you, you'll laugh like you've never laughed before

Incredibly creative and very funny
xredgarnetx9 October 2007
I have never seen anything like the two-part STAR WARS spoof that FAMILY GUY trotted out for its latest season premier. If this show wasn't light-years ahead of THE SIMPSONS already, it surely was with this incredible saga. I cannot imagine how many weeks or months went into piecing this mini-epic together. The plot has FAMILY GUY patriarch Peter Griffin (voiced by show creator Seth McFarlane) telling his family a variation on the original Star Wars story with himself as Han Solo and everyone he knows standing in for the other characters. His wife, for instance, is Princess Leia, and their dog is Chewbaca. Baby Stewie is Darth Vader, of all people. Keep in mind FAMILY GUY is a Fox show, and 20th Century Fox owns the STAR WARS movies, so McFarlane was able to avail himself of music, sound effects and images from the original STAR WARS movie. The seamless integration of these authentic STAR WARS bits in this cartoon turns this two-parter from an ordinary TV cartoon into something else entirely. If you haven't seen this, make sure you watch for it. It marks a turning point in the history of TV cartooning. Obviously, subsequent episodes will never be able to live up to it, but they need not. I think McFarlane wanted to kick THE SIMPSONS' ass for the season starter. If you saw the season starter for THE SIMPSONS, I am sure you will agree. A sidenote: When Peter has finished spinning his STAR WARS yarn, he and son Chris, voiced by the highly versatile Seth Green, argue briefly but sharply about a Cartoon Network show called ROBOT CHICKEN. Chris, who loves the show, points out ROBOT CHICKEN did a spoof of STAR WARS long before FAMILY GUY's version, while Peter disdains and dismisses and insults ROBOT CHICKEN. Green is the creator of ROBOT CHICKEN. Talk about an inside joke. Maybe the greatest inside joke ever perpetuated. What a perfect ending to a perfect yarn.

fan of Family Guy? remember the first Star Wars? well then, you are in for a treat - the one liners are gold, the characters are priceless - R2D2 getting high "I could really go for some Tatooine, Wind and Fire right now" takes a sec, but every laugh is a great laugh - well done guys!!

watch it at any cost, and enjoy

check out the credits too, the 'Red Leaders' are listed - Mick Hucknell said his one line and was out

Red Ochtobah, shtanding by = priceless

all in all, you will all have a pile of lines as your msn tags after watching this - mcfarlane at his best so far

For Full Experience, Watch the DVD.
buffychik21 January 2008
I saw the episode, thought it was funny, and being such a fan of Family Guy, knew how much Seth McFarlane loved the Star Wars references. I knew it was only a matter of time before a full-on remake of the film was created.

Then, I saw that a full-length DVD was coming out with extended and added scenes. Yeah. You thought it was good on Cartoon Network. Nothing compares to Stewie's diaper going over to the Dark Side. There is so much more adult humor. Everything is uncensored, and uncut.

The DVD extras include excellent commentary with Seth McFarlane, David A. Goodman, and Dominic Polcino (the episode director). My suggestion is to watch it once without the commentary, and once with. There's a fantastic interview with George Lucas, and a look into how (and why) Blue Harvest was made. I had no idea just how much of the original film was actually used. Direct quotes from Star Wars, scenes taken directly from the film, even 95% of the score is the original score with short edits and the Family Guy adaptation from Walter Murphy. The detail of the animation, right down to the explosions that look like effects taken directly from Star Wars (but aren't), was all done so well. George Lucas should be proud.

Seth McFarlane and his team put a great deal of effort into making this a quality and hysterical revamp of a Lucas classic. You can't get the full experience until you see it on DVD, though. Seth, you're a freaking genius.

IMO, this was one of the best Family Guy episodes to date...
73Zero23 January 2008
Being a fan of both Star Wars and Family Guy, I was absolutely excited once I heard of "Blue Harvest" being produced. I immediately knew this episode was going to ROCK! Plus, I also thought it was VERY cool of Lucasfilm to gave their blessing to produce this hour-long episode.

After watching this episode repeatedly, I can honestly say without a doubt that it was one of the best Family Guy episodes EVER. Filled with tons of Star Wars-related gags and the usual hilarious absurdity, it was definitely the hardest I'd ever laughed watching Family Guy.

If you're a fan of Family Guy or Star Wars (or both like me), you definitely need to watch this episode.

The Force is strong in this one...
thanudir24 September 2007
IMHO, Family Guy just keeps getting better and better with each episode..

Last night, I watched this episode, and it just kept topping itself as it went along.

I am glad that Lucas has the good humour to allow this and the Robot Chicken Star Wars episode to be made during this 30th anniversary of his movie.

I'll have to go back and watch this again with some friends of mine just to see their reaction.

I can't wait to see what the rest of this season is going to bring us.. or will the creators of the show push it too far again and get canceled?

Oh My God!!!
jisaacs115 October 2007
This is one of the Single Best (TM) Star Wars parodies I have ever seen. Not only did they make extensive use of the John Williams soundtrack, they also gave credit to him, and even included him and the London Symphony Orchestra as characters (not to mention the multi-talented Danny Elfman), but they actually reproduced in exquisite detail many of the critical special effects (from the original, not the special edition)! Also, the references to Robot Chicken's parody (not even nearly as good) and Cartoon Network (carefully, and as such, even more skillfully avoiding references to Fox) were particularly priceless! If these folks were given carte Blanche and an unlimited budget for the entire saga . . . Oh - My - G-O-D! I can only hope . . . !

"Family Guy: Blue Harvest"...
sternn011 October 2007
This was nothing short of TV gold.

Every once in awhile I see something on television that is pure magic from start to finish, and this particular show was one of them...

This episode was an homage to the film, and even though they "Family-Guy'ed" it with their edgy humour, it was still a brilliant piece of work, with some of the scenes being almost shot-for-shot from the movie. It is obvious that Seth MacFarlane and the rest of the creators are die-hard Star Wars fans.

And it was neat to see they went with the original version, not the George Lucas-ized, Greedo-shoots-first version.

A long time ago, but somehow in the future...
RainDogJr31 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Han Solo is in an extremely dangerous mission, helping Luke Skywalker to save the Princess Leia. He must deal with many Stormtroopers and at the very same time, he is trying to steal a couch that he found in the garbage.

That's just one of the many hilarious situations that we can find in this unique version of "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope". "Family Guy" is just one of my favourites shows and although I haven't watch all the episodes I'm related to must of the secondary characters knowing their behaviour and how they are related to the Griffin family. I said that because in this special episode most of the main characters of the "Star Wars" universe are represented by most of the main characters of "Family Guy": Chris is Luke Skywalker, Peter is Han Solo, Brian is Chewbacca, Lois is Leia, Quagmire is C-3PO, Cleveland is R2-D2 and Stewie is Darth Vader. But Obi-Wan Kenobi is represented by Herbert, a pedophile who loves Chris. This character is not very important in the show but is just hilarious to see a Kenobi who's "inspiration" is Luke.

Well all the characters are just like in the show and the gags are hilarious, making funny of Lucas and pals. Another thing that I really like is that the animation, when is pure "Star Wars", is really great and the explosions too.

Conclusion: I think that if you love "Family Guy" but you don't know a lot of the "Star Wars" universe (only if you're a child because every adult most know about it) you will love this special tribute/parody but if you're a big fan of "Star Wars" but you don't know/like "Family Guy" (like in the case of my father) you won't, probably, laugh as I did so I recommend that you first check some episodes and if you like them (I'm pretty sure you will) then check this special episode. Of course if you love both (like me) you probably have already checked it.

Region 4 DVD: the single disc edition is great. It has a lot of extras but my favourites are the interview made by Seth MacFarlane to George Lucas, a feature with the references to "Star Wars" from the show and the hilarious introduction to the episode. Also contains one complete episode of the show, "North by North Quahog", that is just hilarious.

Funny, Clever..
mirosuionitsaki222 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It's unusual that this is just an episode, when Family Guy's Untold Story movie was first a movie, and also a two-parter episode. This movie was the best that Family Guy has ever done in a while. I have to admit, I haven't finished the Robot Chicken's version of Star Wars so I can't compare. But I know that this would have been better.

I love how scenes from Star Wars were at times made fun of. Such as the bar scene, with the guy who claims he doesn't like Luke (Chris) even though they have never met.

One downfall is that the humor can take the viewer out of the story. That's what you have to be careful about being too funny, heh.

I recommend this movie.. or episode for every Family Guy fan. Like the movie says, if you think you know Family Guy.. You don't know Sith. That's not a typo.

It's fine
jpapanone5 January 2021
I hadn't seen this in a long time so wanted to watch it again. It's a fine parody...and serves up almost every single family guy trope. It's fine...but like all sitcoms and just copy paste repeat. Very family guy formulaic. Was fun when it first came out...but they go on to do this basic thing for the next decade and a half.

A 7 is an indicator to me that I'd want to watch this again bc its enjoyable. Had to give this a 6. I can go another 10 years...or forever without seeing this again. Good for a 1 time view...but not repeated. #DiminishingReturns

About Family Guy
glenn_rogers-com24 September 2007
Hi, I wanted to comment on the season premiere of the Family Guy. Wow, what an episode. Not to give too much away, any fan of the show will love this episode. I thought the animation was first rate. It reminded me of the animation of the Simpsons movie. Some scenes were pretty much third dimensional. I liked the shots of the planets and of the spaceships. Also, it was a pretty accurate take off of the first Star Wars movie, which I saw as a kid. I was wondering who going to play Obi Wan Kenobi and I was right on my guess, the old man pervert, and Stewie as Darth Vader was hilarious too. I did notice that Meg wasn't involved though. Also, I liked the Robot Chicken conversation at the end, with Chris and Peter arguing about it. That's an in joke, because Seth Green is a creator of Robot Chicken and he is the voice of Chris. I would say that was Family Guy at it's best last night. There are so many bad shows on TV nowadays, it's great to see there is some good shows left that actually believe in good and creative writing and film-making. I am so glad that shows like Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park are still around. They are a ray of hope in a vast wasteland of mediocrity, bad acting and writing. God, Simpsons has been on for 18 years and I still get laughs out of it.

Star Wars fun
TheOneThatYouWanted19 November 2016
Revisiting this classic after so many years, strange to say but it is a little dated. But still, it holds up. Definitely one of better Star Wars parody out there. I believe this was made back during the height of Family Guy's run. I saw an episode of Family Guy a few weeks ago and it is not as funny as it used to be when comparing it to a decade ago. Anyway, this is worth checking out if you are a Star Wars fan. I thought this was a solo, stand alone film but appertaining this is officially part of the TV show series. Good to know. It is always nice having useless information like that flouting around in my head. Needless to say this generation is doomed. And this end my review.

Almost the worst STAR WARS parody ever
mithgon9 February 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, most people seem to like Season 6's Ep. 1; and being one of the kids how grew up with SW in the 80's, there is nothing I enjoy more than a good comical shot at SW. I can waste hours watching parodies on YouTube.

Having said this, you may understand that I was excited about this Episode, with the fanboy/insider title "Blue Harvest". Yet, after watching the 45 min version on DVD, I feel disappointed and annoyed.

Why? The parody has no respect for the original material! You might say that this is the whole point, but no, the best spoofs and parodies emerge from love for the original material. Here, we observe a desire to ridicule it and rip it apart. Many scenes (and especially the score) are perfectly recreated. I was stunned by the accuracy. But mix that with Obi-Wan being a horny, child-molesting pervert, a talking R2-D2 and too many random family-guyesque (for lack of a better term) scenes (e.g., the couch steeling? almost like Hitler on a one-wheeled bike juggling fresh fish; indeed, that is seen in FamilyGuy), and you get this mess.

Put another way, a line as "The Force penetrates us!" is only funny when the surroundings are not so perfect that we feel we see the actual thing. Then it is not poking fun at good old memories, it violates these memories. Here, the technical perfection actually hinders the cause (to make fun and entertain) To be fair, there are redeeming moments and ideas: Stewie as DV was awesome, as was the whole discussion about fixing the DeathStar's weakness ("Okay, we get contractors' offers."). Also the cantina dialog "Isn't a parsec a measure of distance?" - really funny.

However, if one screws up the final fight between OW and DV that badly (Obi gets an erection and is killed a second later?! What the ...), the overall verdict must be: Almost the worst SW parody ever! (Worst: the Simpsons' Duel of the Fates)

Superb

Warning: Spoilers
Without a doubt the best family guy episode ever. It starts when the power goes out and peter starts to tell the story of star wars episode four. The story of the episode is basically the same as the real thing, but they make fun of some of the flaws of the actual star wars.

The main character line up is like this:

Peter----Han Solo Chris----Luke Skywalker Brian----Chewbacca Lois----Princess Leah Stewie----Darth Vader Meg----The one eyed monster in the garbage pit Herbert----Obi Wan Kanobi Quagmire----C3PO Clevland----R2D2

If you have the opportunity to see this, take it, it is the funniest thing i have ever seen. Anybody who doesn't like this movie must be a fan of star trek and not star wars.

The title Blue Harvest is quite interesting. It was the fake production title of Return of the Jedi. It has also been released that the empire strikes back family guy episode will be entitled: Something... Something... Something... Dark Side.

Laughed so hard I was mimicking the jokes 2 minutes after I each one..
unpaidchef14 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Oh the most clever thing yet, they have some very good skill I mean everything in it I don't think I could come up with what they made fun of, like at the start when all the Rebel's go towards the door that the Empire is boarding from one of the Rebel's say, "What if they come in a different door?" And "Luke, Luke, Luke! Don't forget to tell uncle Owen not to tell you your father is Darth Vader!" The epic jokes really do roll on and on, any family guy fan should go out and buy the DVD, I would suggest the same for Star Wars fan because of the intelligent ways the humor scales into the episode, even though I have a strong feeling they will do the other 2 parts. But I doubt the first 3 will made.. Oh wait... now I think about it could be done. But a lot of characters would need to be created, Anakin (Stewie) Anakin older (Stewie from the "Movie") etc etc. Well I'm ranting but still very epic movie.

funny and good but some letdowns
Oliversimpsonuk29 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
i think that this is one of the best things the family guy team have done they have done good with this but i feel they were disrespectful to star wars in some ways for example they replaced many of the best and funniest jokes with humourless and tasteless jokes which annoyed me because the quotes are what i loved about the original trilogy i hated the way stewie portrayed darthvader making him stupid and rubbish in my view very disrespectful to the real Darth Vader who in my view is one of the best movie villains of all time and stewies Vader was far from the evil Vader we know and love i liked Chris a Luke funny and acting exactly , like Luke did in the films the same for peter as Han, loris as Leia, Brian as chewbacca and Hebert as obi wan was my favourite character out of the episode funny as hell plus the other characters were good as well and another criticism of the episode is that they mixed up some of the scenes as star war fans will notice but in my view a funny and great episode of family guy

first of three Star Wars parodies
disdressed123 February 2011
i thought this was a very funny and clever parody of the first Star Wars film.it's basically the characters from Family guy portraying the characters from the film.there are some inspired choices in which characters portray who.some of the lines are very funny.everything is very fast paced.it stays pretty true to the original film, while adding it's own unique spin.the DVD running time is listed as 48 minutes(it's actually a bit longer than that)so it's obviously condensed.anyway,i laughed a lot.as an aside,i noticed this particular episode seems toned down in term of pushing the envelope,at least compared to other episodes of Family Guy i have seen.maybe it's just my imagination, but,it doesn't seem as sick and twisted or perverse, though there is still some of that element.and yet it's still riotously funny.th version i watched is from Laugh it up Fuzzball:The Family Guy Trilogy collection which contains all three parodies of the first three original Star Wars films.for me Family Guy:Blue Harvest is an 8/10

The One With Star Wars...
taylorkingston20 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this episode. I saw it before I ever saw any of the Star Wars movies, so I didn't get all of the references, and inside jokes, but I still found it funny. After seeing the Star Wars movies, I found it even funnier, because I had just seen what it was really like. Some may find it insulting because they're bagging on their favorite movie, but I embrace things like this.

In this episode, the Griffin family are sitting at home, watching TV, when the power goes out. Peter decides to tell the tale of Star Wars. Everyone from the family, and other Family Guy cast members, play the roles of infamous characters, such as Han Solo, Leia, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. They take the scenes from Star Wars, recreate them in a similar manner, and then add other hilarious moments to make it even funnier.

Fun Fact: Among the aliens in the cantina scene are Bender from Futurama, and Roger from American Dad.

Fun Fact: At the end, Chris, and Peter argue about an episode of Robot Chicken, which Seth Green (who voices Chris) is the co-creator, producer, and director.

Fun Fact: When Han Solo (Peter) disguises himself as a Storm Trooper, he still wears his glasses on the outside of his helmet.

Favorite spoof-character: Stewie Griffin as Darth Vader.

Best part of the episode: The thing with the couch.

Overall, I give this episode a 9 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Amazing.

Family Guy Star Wars
samcracc24 September 2007
This is episode is Hilarius. There are characters in Star Wars. Peter Griffen as Han Solo, Lois Griffen as Princes Liea, Herbert as Obi One Konobi, Chris Griffen as Luke Skywalker, Quagmire as Cp30, Cleveland as R2D2 and Brian the dog as Chewbacca. Thats Hilarius when Han Solo and Chewbacca get the couch from the garbage thats new. The words where funny on Family Guy on Star Wars. Thats hysterical when a man does a lightsabber on that nosed character from Star Wars 1. This happens that the lights where not on so Peter Griffen tells the story about the Star Wars. This episode is Hilarius you will like this episode and so does the characters look.

even worse than the Holiday Special... about as unfunny as Hardware Wars
FieCrier17 January 2008
If you want to see Star Wars done in Family Guy animation, and for it to only last about forty- five minutes, this is for you. If you want to laugh, well you're out of luck! All the good bits are used in the TV commercial for it. Basically the line about Stewie's diapers having gone over to the Dark Side. That's about it.

I'm not sure why it turned out being so laughless. Maybe they wanted to be as faithful to the original as they could, and thus didn't concentrate enough on the point of making a spoof. Perhaps also by abandoning their joke format from the show, where there's so many "remember that time?" non sequiturs, in favor of actually having a plot they were held to, they were working outside their comfort zone. Who knows?

There's also the disturbing fact that Rush Limbaugh was employed, and presumably paid, to contribute his voice to this. That man shouldn't be getting paid for anything.

My first thought upon renting this and finding out that it wasn't feature length was that I had been ripped off, but instead I felt relieved I had only wasted half the time (I still wish I hadn't paid to see it, though).

Family Guy: Blue Harvest
jboothmillard30 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
In Britain this two-part Family Guy special, celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the first in the Star Wars Trilogy, was released separately (not in a season box set), and what a special it is. When the TV stops working, the Griffin family: Lois (Alex Borstein), Stewie (MacFarlane), Chris (Seth Green) and Meg (Mila Kunis); listen to Peter (Seth MacFarlane) tell the story of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and this is when the story sees the fantastic spoof of the first great movie. You probably know the story: R2-D2 (Cleveland, voiced by Mike Henry) and C-3PO (Quagmire, voiced by MacFarlane) escape an attacked ship. Princess Leia (Lois) is kidnapped by Darth Vader (Stewie) and Governor Tarkin (Adam West). Luke Skywalker (Chris) dreams of leaving home, and when his Uncle Owen (Lois's dad, voiced by MacFarlane) and Aunt Beru (Lois's mum, voiced by Borstein) are killed by stormtroopers, Obi-Won Kenobi (Herbert the old paedophile, voiced by Henry) takes him to become a Jedi, and get off the planet with the help of Han Solo (Peter) and Chewbacca (Brian, voiced by MacFarlane) in the Millennium Falcon. Obviously they go on the Death Star, Obi-Won is killed by Vader, and the Rebels get together against the Empire to destroy the space station. Oh, and Meg by the way is the creature in the garbage shoot. Phew! Also starring MacFarlane as Tom Tucker, Lori Alan as Diane Simmons, Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, Beverly D'Angelo as Ellen Griswold, Mick Hucknall, Phil LaMarr as Ollie Williams and Patrick Warburton as Joe Swanson. For anyone that doesn't know (apart from maybe the mega Star Wars fanatics), Blue Harvest was the fake working title for Return of the Jedi. The jokes, including a mock of Dirty Dancing's "I've Had the Time of My Life", the music of John Williams (and Danny Elfman), quotes in the film, and some cool animated effects, this is an essential spoof for any fan of Star Wars and/or Family Guy. Very good!

Very funny affectionate spoof with many more hits than misses
bob the moo1 June 2008
When a power cut hits the Griffin family home the usual focal point of the television is lost and Peter turns to a more traditional source of entertainment – original story telling. To entertain his family Peter tells a story of a young farm boy on a distant planet, drawn into the fight against the strength of the evil Empire.

Understandably this episode was heavily pushed on DVD for sale and, thinking it was a full film I did add it to my LoveFilm list. Fortunately before that site could work out to get it to the top of my list I noticed that BBC were showing it as part of the new season of Family Guy. So, pleased that I saved myself a bit of cash, I watched it on BBC3 the other recently. From the very start the novelty value of seeing the familiar Star Wars footage and hearing the music the novelty value had me hooked. For a show built heavily on popular culture reference and p*ss-taking jokes, Family Guy offers lots of potential for affectionately spoofing the show – with its own style leaning away from the easy gags but also able to carry them as well.

Mostly the approach is very funny, with plenty of good laughs. There are one or two misfires in there that don't work but for every one of those there are about ten good hits. It is all a bit silly of course and those that do not "get" Family Guy humour will find the same problem here, however for the majority I think it will work as it did for me. The "casting" of the regular characters is well done. Meg is wisely left to a apt and funny brief appearance while Peter and Brian are good as Han and Chewie. Lois as Leah is not overused while Chris is a good Luke. Cleveland and Quagmire are imaginatively cast as the droids. Both Stewie and old perv Herbert are well put in the roles of Vader and Kenobi but the former is not used often enough while the latter is perhaps overused to a certain degree and is responsible for a miss or two.

Blue Harvest is not perfect, nor is it worth buying a forty minute special for the price of a full-length DVD but otherwise it is an enjoyable and very funny Star Wars spoof that is not so much mocking as it is affectionately joshing.

THE PINNACLE OF TELEVISION
discgolf-7333429 November 2022
Words cannot do this episode proper justice, but I will try. Family Guy surprises me with every episode because of how much effort they put in to it, yet this episode goes above and beyond. While still showing respect to the amazing saga, the show pulls off a perfect parody of Star Wars. Bringing in the London symphony orchestra, they allow the original soundtrack to work its magic. Many of the explosion effects remain the same to the movies.

On top of all the extraordinary effort, they still find away to fit in top shelf comedy. My abs were sore as the credits rolled. The couch sequence, the one liners, the jokes about the plot holes... oh my goodness!
