Following its release in North America last year, director Julian Richards' debut horror feature, Darklands, is finally now available on DVD in the UK as well courtesy of Metrodome Distribution. Check out its impressive new cover art.
From the Press Release:
Starring Craig Fairbrass (Cliffhanger), Jon Finch (Frenzy), and Rowena King (Wild Saragossa Sea), Darklands is frequently compared to Robin Hardy’s 1970’s cult classic The Wicker Man, but the writer/director also acknowledges a debt to Roman Polanski’s Rosemary's Baby.
Darklands, which won the Melies D’Argent for Best European Fantasy Film in 1997, launched the directing career of Julian Richards, who went on to helm Silent Cry, The Last Horror Movie, Summer Scars, and Shiver, whilst producer Paul Brooks produced Shadow of the Vampire, White Noise, and Haunting in Connecticut.

With Shiver being released to DVD earlier this month, we had director Julian Richards take part in our latest Q&A feature. Continue reading to learn about his work with Danielle Harris and John Jarratt, filming this project in just 18 days, and much more:
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. Can you tell our readers how you became involved with Shiver? What attracted you to the story and the project?
Kevin Howarth (who played the villain in two of my previous films The Last Horror Movie and Summer Scars) suggested to writer/producer Robert Weinbach that he approach me to direct Shiver. I sent Robert screeners of my films and the following week he offered me the job.

Julian Richards, Wales’ prime movie export, has been stomping in the horror genre with bloody gusto for the last several years. Since completing The Last Horror Movie, a violent vérité serial-killer flick starring Kevin Howarth released Stateside as a Fango Video title, Richards has been busy dividing his time between his production company Prolific Films and sales outfit Jinga Films.
Summer Scars, a coming-of-age tale with a sinister, dark edge (also starring Howarth, pictured), won two Welsh BAFTA awards, received U.S. release last year and has a UK theatrical run scheduled for this coming June/July. Through Jinga, Richards has sold the Scottish lycanthropicture Wild Country to Lionsgate, the torture shocker Gnaw to Mpi (see item here) and the seriously creepy, well-crafted and very groovy supernatural slow-burner The Disappeared (see review here) to IFC. Richards has also directed Charles Dickens’S England, a feature-length documentary starring Sir Derek Jacobi,...

I love how the Rue crew can almost always find a way to take something that’s current and relevant in our genre, in this case the remake of My Bloody Valentine, and hone in on the Canadian aspects of it. I would say more than anything else, including all the time I’ve spent in Canada, Rue Morgue has made me appreciate the filmmaking talent of the Great White North the most.
Of course this month it’s no real stretch; the remake of one of the most influential and respected slashers to come out of Canada means they’ve got a built-in angle to work, and work it they do. The main feature is a nice, healthy interview with original director George Mihalka by James Burrell, in which he discusses the sorted history of the film and it’s issues with the MPAA that saw...

It's almost that time again, and this week we have one of our personal favorites here at Qe dropping. It's The Vanguard and you've probably seen our interview with writer/director Matthew Hope and our review, and we can't recommend this one enough. It's post apocalyptic, well shot, and has a great little storyline. Next is another Pa flick, Pulse 2, which doesn't actually look very good, but regardless, it'll still be watched. Then we have Chapter 27, the Jared Leto starrer about the killing of John Lennon. I know agentorange is looking forward too this one, The Mindscape of Alan Moore. Lastly, a group of UK teens deals with a crazy drifter in Summer Scars. Trailers, synopsis, and amazon links after the break.

We just got word in that Julian Richards' award winning Summer Scars has been picked up for distribution via Danger After Dark!
Due out on DVD on September 30th, Summer Scars follows "six fourteen year old children who skip school to play in the woods, but some hot rodding on a stolen moped changes the fate of their day. They crash into Peter, a disheveled loner, who is delighted to have a group of kids to hang out with. First he gains their trust by joining in their games, but then his behaviour begins to change. Peter uses what he has learned about the kids against them - bullying the alpha boys, belittling the weaker ones and saving his worst for the only girl of the group. The gang realize too late they are being held prisoner and when Peter acknowledges he has gone too far they are forced...

I asked Tim if I could help out with the Fantastic Fest blog and he demanded to see my qualifications. I told him I've been "blogging" (a word I loathe) for Cinematical (blatant plug) for several years, plus I run my own nerdly little movie blog right here (pathetic plug). He said Yes, I Know You Retard and Thanks For The Help and off we go. My plan is to give the Fantastic Fest Faithful a reason to visit this blog more than, say, once a fortnight (which I think is three months).
So to give you a little taste of my oh-so-thorough "blogging" (ugh) abilities, I'm starting a new tradition right now: Every June 1st we'll scan back through the previous year's Ff titles and see how they're faring on the U.S. distribution front. And by we I mean me.
