Kier-la Janisse's Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies has been educating people in London, New York and Montreal for a few years now on the wide variety of forms and subjects in horror films. And there are two excellent classes upcoming in London for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the genre. On Thursday November 9th, the Institute is welcoming Robert Morgan (Bobby Yeah, 'D is for Deloused from ABCs of Death 2) and Chris Shepherd (Dad's Dead, Silence is Golden) to discuss horror animation. Animation of the horror variety might not be common, but some of the best short animated films of recent years are horror, with monsters, dark places, and scares abounding in the argubaly far greater imaginative form that can be achieved...

‘Wonderstruck’ Is Cannes’ First Oscar Contender and Other Revelations From Festival Press Conference
“Wonderstruck” is the perfect match of rich source material and cinema. Author Brian Selznick (“Hugo”) was inspired to adapt his own graphic novel intertwining two stories from 1927 and 1977 when costume designer Sandy Powell pulled it off a shelf and said, “This should be a Todd Haynes movie.”
Selznick, following the recent model of “Room” author Emma Donoghue, secretly adapted his own script on spec, with a little advice from “Hugo” screenwriter John Logan, which doesn’t hurt. By the time the detailed screenplay, complete with sound notes, got to Haynes, the director found its cinematic riches “irresistible,” he said at the Cannes press conference. He artfully weaves a propulsive mystery, throwing the audience clues in both the black and white silent narrative and the color with a ’70s story that eventually ties all the threads together.

To quote Alicia Keys, Mma fighter Ronda Rousey is on fire! The 28-year-old took to Reddit on Monday evening to answer questions from fans, and the virtual chat was nothing short of entertaining, informative and quite inspiring! She introduced herself (as if introductions were necessary) with, "Ronda here. My favorite Pokémon is Mew and I used to moderate a Pokémon forum." That kinda would have been enough in its own amazing way, but there was more! Here are five things we learned about the powerhouse fighter and all-around champion: 1. Silence Is Golden: There's no hype music involved when Rousey is preparing for a fight—it's all about absolute silence you do not...

"I'm s**tting my pants!" It's fair to say Harriet Jackson is feeling a little bit apprehensive about joining Big Brother on Tuesday's launch night - after all, she only entered as a joke when her friend Gemma Clarke (from the band Babyshambles) dared her to record a video outside Chloe Goodman's eviction. "The game's gone really far!" Harriet joked when we spoke to her at the contestants' secret hotel.
But she is indeed about to head into the house, so we sat down with Harriet to chat about her supposed support of Ukip (she doesn't like them any more), her free and easy attitude to flatulence, bitchy girls and much more...
1. Harriet isn't worried if people don't like her.

The documents allege you assaulted and intimidated the flight crew attempting to perform their duties. They also allege you referred to the crew and the other passengers as peasants, and were pacing down the aisles, yelling profanities.
You allegedly threatened to kill flight crew members, Conrad. Even more, the flight crew was reportedly worried you were under the influence due to your alleged erratic way of speaking. (However, the 20-year-old said he had not been drinking and had only taken a sleeping pill.)

Silence is golden, especially when Martin Scorsese is planted in the director's chair. The Oscar-winning director is famous for including iconic songs in his films — “Goodfellas” had “Layla,” “Casino” had “House of the Rising Sun,” “The Departed” had “Gimme Shelter” — but, as this intriguing new mash-up from Scorsese fan Tony Zhou highlights, the filmmaker is quite comfortable with silence, too. See video: Rihanna's New ‘Styled to Rock’ Series Is a Fashion-Music ‘Mash-Up’ Zhou cut together silent shots and scenes from nearly fifty years worth of Scorsese films for a video essay in which Zhou discusses the use of silence in film,...

Silence is golden, unless you’re Kim Ki-duk. For Kim it is just another void to stuff to its breaking point with all things emotionally jarring. Outside of natural ambiance and some sparse music, Moebius is devoid of any audible dialog. Instead it relies on the power of performances and the intensity of a wickedly sharp and revolting story. This time around the South Korean director sets his sights on family dysfunction, and make no bones about it, he has a killer eye and won’t blink. Moebius‘ vulture like focus hovers around a family already stretched to its tensile limit. Mom drinks, Dad dabbles in less than secret infidelity, and their son (Seo Young-joo) is a meek, silent witness to their ensuing battles. When mom’s jealously boils over, the knives literally come out, inflicting visceral and devastating wounds to the ones she loves. Unable to cope with the maelstrom she removes herself from the turmoil...

When ABC's newest sitcom "Family Tools" premieres on Wednesday (May 1), it'll mark Leah Remini's return to network comedy after her long-running CBS hit "King of Queens" went off the air in 2007. It's also the first time Remini's worked in a single-camera series, as opposed to the traditional three-camera series filmed in front of a live audience that she's used to.
Remini tells Zap2It that working without an audience took some getting used to. "It's very depressing because you don't have people laughing, you know?" she says. "It's like all you've got to do is smile at somebody in the audience or say hello or sign a script and [they scream] and you're like, 'I love this!' You get that validation, you know?"

"Short films eh? They're just practice before you make a real film."
In my career as a short film programmer, the above is a phrase I hear with depressing regularity. Sure, many directors make shorts before they make feature films (including Mike Leigh, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick) but to dismiss them as "practice" would seem a bit unfair. Nobody says Kafka's short stories are rubbish because they're not the length of a novel.
A short film is an art form in its own right and to make a great short requires innate skill and immense talent.

I made what turned out to be a surprise revelation to some friends of mine recently, I off handedly mentioned I don’t like Half Life 2. Friends and colleagues all question how I could not like one of the “greatest games ever made” and quite simply it’s because it’s tedious and boring. The easy option for any fans of it is to tell me “I didn’t get it” or that I’m somehow trying to be “counter-culture”, where as in fact I feel the truth of the matter is that I think there was a band wagon liking of the game.
Making this statement of scorn brought tweets and defensive arguments my way. I thought back to what I said and realised people were getting defensive over a couple of sentences where I didn’t really put across my point other than the equivalent of a long drawn out raspberry noise.

Summer is almost here. Are you still looking for something to keep your movie-loving kids (ages 9-18) busy this summer? Sure, you could drop them off at the multiplex every morning on your way to work, but allow me to recommend something much better — Austin Film Festival’s Summer Film Camp. Don’t worry, I am thinking exactly what you are thinking. “Why didn’t something like this exist when I was a kid?” Yeah, I know, kids have it so much easier nowadays! For example, I remember when I had to walk barefoot in the snow, uphill for ten miles to get to some lame-ass summer camp when I was a kid. Twenty years from now, do you really want your kids to be stuck in mindless office jobs reminiscing about their oh-so-boring childhoods while stressing out about what to do with their kids over the upcoming summer? Yes, that...

Since the first trailer for Doctor Who Series 7 emerged and we received virtual confirmation from Steven Moffat that the Daleks would return from their holiday, the internet has been awash with excitement about the Doctor’s arch-nemesis. We’ve had Matt Smith and Karen Gillan photographed with their favourite Dalek, the BBC’s official Doctor Who website has been trailing through the history of the Daleks over the years and Whovians debating which era of Daleks were the best.
All of this has ignored the fact that the Daleks never went anywhere. Despite Moffat’s best efforts to deprive Doctor Who of the Daleks, they still appeared in series 6, albeit briefly, but more importantly, the Daleks have been busily taking over Twitter. And it seems that for once, it is they, rather than the Doctor who is winning this war of words.

Silence is golden for French film, while Meryl Streep wins best actress and John Hurt honoured for oustanding contribution
There were no spoken words, vibrant colours, impressive special effects, sophisticated plotlines or indeed anything at all that audiences expect in a modern film, and that was all very much in its favour as The Artist emerged triumphant at the 2012 Baftas.
The French silent film had been the bookies' favourite to sweep all before it and it did not disappoint, winning seven awards including best film, best director, best original screenplay, original music, best costume design, best cinematography.
The Artist's tally of Baftas equalled the number given to The King's Speech last year and Slumdog Millionaire in 2009. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid still holds the record with nine, followed by The Killing Fields with eight.
Picking up the screenplay award, The Artist's director, Michel Hazanavicius, said: "I'm very surprised,...

Back in June, Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse turned an angry voicemail that a patron left the movie theater, after being kicked out of a film for violating its strict no talking or texting rule, into a hilarious viral PSA. After a screening of their new film Young Adult at the Alamo last month, star Patton Oswalt and director Jason Reitman — both fans of the theater and the original video — decided on the fly that they wanted to shoot their own version of that Nsfw “Don’t Talk — Angry Voicemail” PSA, with Oswalt voicing the role of the Angry Texter. One of the most talked-about movies of the year is one in which there’s no talking at all.
The little French silent film "The Artist" has been building fans (and Oscar buzz) since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Celebrating Hollywood’s 1920s silent era, the story is a black-and-white melodrama filled with comedy, dancing and an adorable Jack Russell terrier that will make you feel like you’ve been transported back to the times of flappers and fedoras.
The film, directed by rising French director Michel Hazanavicius, opens this weekend in the U.S. It follows dashing leading man George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), who at the height of his stardom is slammed back down to Earth when he refuses to star in talkies. Quickly becoming an afterthought, Valentin must sell his worldly possessions to survive, but a rising star (Bérénice Bejo) he helped get into...

Paxton talked to us about her preference for old-school pop culture, her Latina bonafides and why audiences don't have to keep quiet while watching "Shark Night."

Earlier this summer, my colleague Sandra Gonzalez aired her grievances about movie theater food smugglers and what constitutes as acceptable meal etiquette (candy, snacks) and what doesn’t (a cheeseburger). While the great smuggle debate still rages on, a movie theater in New York has made their stance on dinner and a movie clear: They go together like popcorn and soda. Except in this case, popcorn is deviled eggs and soda is sparkling wine. Bon appetit!

You know the expression ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me’? I hate to say this, because she’s completely the victim here, but shame on Kelly Osbourne for not only thinking cheating former fiance Luke Worrall could change, but for going off about his flaws on Twitter! That is one big no-no you should All avoid!
The 26-year-old former reality star had planned a reunion with her philandering ex over the holidays, but things didn’t go as planned (remember ladies, once a cheater — always a cheater) and she took to the ‘net to air her grievances. ”Luke Worrall is the biggest piece of s**, he has been trying to get back with me, I only came home for Xmas to see him.

Silent Hill is the only video game movie I have yet to watch all the way through. While beautiful to look at, I lost interest and turned it off which I think was a mistake because the movie, visually, was really purdy.News of the sequel has been pretty quiet lately but Empire got an update from director Michael J. Basset on what we can expect: It's early days, and I'm keeping details of the plot secret for now," he told us, "but it's going to be a sequel to the first film whilst trying to remain true to the plot of game 3, and will also work as a stand-alone movie for people who don't know the series." That chimes nicely with the sketchy early reports that the film's protagonist would be Heather Mason, a teenager on the run, who begins to experience dreams of Silent Hill on the eve of her eighteenth birthday,...

The American
Directed by: Anton Corbijn
Cast: George Clooney, Violante Placido, Paolo Bonacelli
Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: September 1, 2010
Plot: An assassin (Clooney) needs to lie low in Italy, but trouble keeps finding him.
Who’S It For? It’s slow. Do you still want to see it? This is easily one of those movies that will have the label, “It’s not for everybody.”
Expectations: For some reason I didn’t really have much expectations with this film even though I love Clooney. Then I watched the Emmys (he did a cameo with “Modern Family” and was given the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award). I had forgotten that Clooney Is Hollywood. Whatever the project, I trust him. Corbijn directed Control the story of Joy Division, which was good, not great.
Scorecard (0-10)

Silence is golden: That's one lesson Demi Lovato has taken away from her brief high-profile romance with Joe Jonas. After going through a very public breakup last spring, Lovato now says she wishes she'd kept her relationship with her Camp Rock 2 costar quiet. "I learned my lesson," Lovato, 17, tells People. "It's not very much fun when you break up in a public relationship. So, maybe next time keep a secret." Though the Jonas Brothers member has been portrayed as a heartbreaker, following his split from other young stars like Taylor Swift, Lovato defends him. "I know that he has the best intentions,...

Silence is golden, but is it worth $700 million? It could be what Tiger Woods gives estranged wife Elin Nordegren in a divorce agreement being hammered out now. While Nordegren has been traveling to Sweden and China with children Sam, 3, and Charlie, 1, and Woods has been struggling to return to the PGA Tour, lawyers for both sides are reportedly close to reaching an agreement. Sources tell people that Nordegren could land "about $700 million," a number that has increased steadily throughout the months of negotiations. Woods's camp, a source tells People, has offered Elin increasing settlement amounts, all of which are contingent on her silence.

Yeah, you know who I’m talking about and if you’re one of these people I’m flying to your house right now so I can kick you in the knee. From talking on their cell phones to chomping on their food, annoying moviegoers flood our theaters everyday ruining a many good movie experience. I don’t pay money to deal with crying babies and horny teens, I invest to escape life for a couple hours. If you’re like me and this stuff gets on your nerves you’ll want to read more.
These people are charged with disturbing the peace, specifically My peace when I’m trying to watch a movie. Some might say that I’m being too picky or grumpy but I think otherwise. It’s something I like to call ‘Tact’. So we’ve narrowed these annoyances down to the seven deadly sins of moviegoers.

It’s a crime that there are only a dozen or so films about, or involving, the world of broadcast radio. Not too many actually deal with the tribulations of censorship, though, which is where the upcoming film Pirate Radio comes in.
The film is about a group of rogue DJ’s on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic who broadcast a pirate radio station in the 1960s, despite the laws forbidding Rock and Roll…all for the love of music. Given the fact that the film is all about 60’s Rock, you can believe that the soundtrack is pretty killer, and you may get to win a copy!
Starting today, keep an eye on our Twitter account every week for a trivia question involving “Radio in The Movies.” The question may be the name of the radio station from Grosse Point Blank or the name of the epic band in Airheads,...

Let me get one thing out of the way first, I love writer/director Richard Curtis, were I not an actual man (chest hair, pot-belly and all) I’d have his babies! Why? Because I love what the man brings to British cinema!
While I may not enjoy all of his films, I love the fact that Curtis can combine a relatively low budget and a largely British cast and generally create something that, while modest, breaks out into mainstream Hollywood!
Here is the man who made Hugh Grant a star, he turned Rhys Ifans into a household name, he brought us Blackadder, Mr. Bean and The Vicar of Dibley! In short, Richard Curtis has probably done more for British film and television worldwide than any other writer or director had dared dream. With Curtis, the humble British Film Industry can stand strong against the trillion dollar behemoth that is the Hollywood machine.
