Avatar has taken the Australian box office top spot for the second consecutive week. James Cameron's sci-fi action movie holds off competition from Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes to secure the number one slot over the Christmas weekend. Avatar's $$12 million gross is more than double that of Holmes, which is one of seven new entries in the top ten. Alvin And The Chipmunks 2, Old Dogs and Did You Hear About The Morgans? round out the top five, while The Lovely Bones bows at number seven. Jane Campion's Bright Star lands at (more) »

Oscars 2010: which runners and riders will last the race?

18 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The nominees will only be announced on 2 February and the awards given out on 7 March, but the likely contenders can already be divined

As the end of 2009 approaches we're in the thick of the Us awards season and pretty much everyone from the critics groups and some of the guilds to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Hfpa), the American Film Institute and the local barman have publicised their nominees and winners. Top 10 lists for 2009 have been drawn up, the year's most admired actors and actresses have been proposed and anointed, and the merits of the best work in directing, screenwriting, editing and all the crafts have been debated. The only body that has yet to weigh in on the virtues of Gabourey Sidibe or George Clooney or Invictus is the guardian of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

When the Academy's 4,000 or so members announce their nominees on 2 February, »

400 Screens, 400 Blows - The Year in Small Films

27 December 2009 6:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Was it a good year, or a bad one? Sometimes that assessment just depends on what I saw last. Sometimes the majority of the holiday/awards movies can be dispiriting, but then sometimes the summer movies can be very exciting. One thing I have discovered is that after a few years go by, some of my most passionate picks tend to fade away in favor of other movies that just keeping hanging on. For example, at the end of 2004, I selected Martin Scorsese's The Aviator as one of the best films of the year, but I have never been struck by the urge to see it again. Two other films that did not make my list, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 and Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead have since risen in stature and have given me many more hours of enjoyment.

This is generally how I choose my list of favorites, »

Josh's Top Ten Movies Of The Year--Or How The King Of The World Reclaimed His Throne

24 December 2009 12:20 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

2009 was a year of delights at the movies. The list below testifies to that. It doesn't rival '07 when two examples of virtual moviemaking perfection were released--namely "No Country for Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" but '09 may have been filled with as many unexpectedly joyful film going experiences as I can remember in a single calendar year.

From sitting in the first public screening of what should have been a forgetful and frivolous romantic comedy on a frigid night in Park City (see #8) to being flabbergasted by the inventiveness of a would-be sci-fi auteur (whose name I couldn't spell or pronounce at the time, see #7) for 112 riveting minutes. Franchises were reborn. Genres were injected with new life. Stephen Sommers made a watchable film called "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra." Young filmmakers came of age. And one mad genius with the heart of a pussycat and »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: 12 Months of Toilet Plunkers and Dumpster Diamonds!

23 December 2009 9:55 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

In My Opinion: Top Ten Biggest Disappointments of 2009

Ten films that didn't live up to expectations Ten Most Disappointing Films of 2009

This year I've decided I'm not going to write a "Worst of 2009" list. What's the point? If you must you can visit the review archives for 2009, sort by grade and find my reviews of Fanboys, The Last House on the Left, All About Steve and I Love You Beth Cooper and then fill in six of your choosing from the "D" section and be done with it. Instead, I'm going back to what I've done only one other time and going to take a look back at the films that ended up disappointing me on one lever or another.

This way I don't have to talk about The Marc Pease Experience or Bride Wars. Year One and Whiteout don't need further dicussion and neither does G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra of Fighting. Instead I can »

Jane Campion and 'Bright Star' -- Lost in the Shuffle?

21 December 2009 4:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Jane Campion, who's wowed film fans and critics for years with movies like Sweetie, The Piano, and The Portrait of a Lady, came back with a fierceness at this year's Cannes with Bright Star, an elegant retelling of the love affair between John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish). The film shows the doomed relationship from Brawne's point of view; an outspoken and creative young woman with a flair for fashion and not much of a passion for Romantic poetry, Brawne becomes enamored of her neighbor much to the disapproval of her mother and his churlish friend, fellow writer Charles Brown (Paul Schneider). Unfortunately, their love remains rather celibate, relegated to holding hands and writing letters. Keats died at 25, unsuccessful and poor, from tuberculosis.

Overall the consensus from Cannes was that Jane Campion's first full-length movie since 2003's In the Cut was a strong contender in a number of Oscar categories, »

SAG shortlists Inglourious Basterds, Precious and Up in the Air

18 December 2009 2:49 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Nominations for the Screen Actors Guild awards largely follow the pattern set by the Golden Globes

Next year's Screen Actors Guild awards are shaping up as a three-horse race after Inglourious Basterds, Precious and Up in the Air all picked up three nominations last night. The SAG awards were set up in 1995 and focus solely on honouring acting performances, both on film and television.

This year's nominations largely followed the lead set by the Golden Globes, which announced its shortlist earlier this week. Battling it out in the best actor category are Morgan Freeman (Invictus), Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Colin Firth (A Single Man), George Clooney (Up in the Air) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart). Nominated for the best actress award are Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) and Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side).
