Half documentary, half scripted-psychological/slasher-horror-film, "S&Man" works at times, but ultimately flops...
TedStixonAKAMaximumMadness13 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
From J.T. Petty (director of the halfway decent direct-to-video "Mimic 3: Sentinel") comes the bizarre, pseudo-documentary, pseudo-mockumentary, pseudo-scripted feature "S&Man" (pronounced "Sandman", not "S and M Man").

The film is presented and introduced as a "documentary" about how, after his original intent to make a film about a convicted voyeur from his hometown failed, J.T. Petty decides to interview underground horror filmmakers who make simulated snuff films and B-movies. These subjects include real filmmakers Fred Vogul (director of the famed and nauseating "August Underground" series, and several other extreme films), Bill Zebub (another real underground director I am not familiar with) and a fictional character, Eric Rost (played by Erik Marcisak), whom is the creator and director of the "S&Man" video series. A series similar to Vogul's "found-footage" work, in which Rost plays an evil character who stalks women and murders them.

Petty and his crew interview the three men (Vogul in particular giving some great insight into horror, underground film and extreme cinema, and why people are into these sorts of films), "Debbie D", an underground film actress, and several psychologists and therapists, talking about horror and its impact on society.

And the first half of the film does come off as a rather compelling analysis of extreme horror and underground cinema, the reasons why it is made and has a popularity, and how/why it impacts people. Some of it is very troubling, some of it is insightful, and some of it is disgusting.

However, the problem lies in the fact that this isn't a true documentary. The first half of the film is essentially an excuse Petty uses to make the second half, which is 90% a scripted story (though still in documentary style) feel more real. In the scripted storyline, Petty begins to question if Rost's "S&Man" series is real or fake, and Rost begins to exhibit evil, disturbing and dangerous tendencies, climaxing in an interesting ending.

However, it felt very unneeded and unnatural. The scripted storyline is phoned in and obvious, and Rost (though compellingly and wonderfully played by Marcisak) just comes off as too much of a "character" in comparison to the real cast like Vogul and Zebub.

So much insight and thought is placed into the real, documentary segments (as I said, Vogul has some very interesting things to say, and Zebub is a fascinating and seemingly troubled person), and they are so informative, that the scripted segments felt like too much of a betrayal. It would have been more compelling if Petty had either made a straight documentary, without the "Is Rost really a killer?" scripted storyline, or just made a full-on mockumentary about Rost. Combining the real and the fake is an interesting concept, and could work, but it just quite doesn't gel here.

As it stands, it's not a bad film, but sadly "meh." An average 5 out of 10.

Good movie

I'm surprised there are not more reviews also. Movie kept my attention and was informative; creepy at times and funny. It's not a masterpiece but I liked it better than "Perfect Host" which bored me at times.

If you paid attention, you can see where the ending is going but it is done well and actually scarier than some the the high budget movies being produced.

I never knew about the "Chiller" Festival - certainly opens your eyes to different strokes for different folks...

Horror movies are such large part of society. There are so many TV shows and police dramas focusing on killing and we are obsessed with it. S&Man delves into the psychology of this, but I do think there was much more they could have discovered or analyzed.

Interesting Look At Snuff and Horrors
Illyngophobia17 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I first saw this a year or so ago while browsing the Movie/Free Movie section of Comcast's On Demand. Scrolling through the pages of films, I saw Fred Vogel's name appear in the cast listing and became fascinated quickly. I took a look at the trailer of the strangely titled feature and was engulfed with curiosity. The film had a look of a documentary with directors and actors in films from horror's "underground scene".

While we meet different celebs talking about movies like "Peeping Tom", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Henry" to name a few, we meet with a fellow behind a line of videos called S&Man, a voyeur and stalker who films people.

I enjoyed this as a filmmaker who would casually look for grand terrors in said "underground scene". I would recommend for anyone who has an interest in film, horror movies and the weird.

Almost impossible to review

What have I just been watching? Good movies are supposed to make you think and that's what this one does. If you have the opportunity to see this movie do. Anything else I write would spoil the fun, but when you've watched it, I'm sure you'll be asking yourself the same question. So look for answers afterwards. You'll want to. The human soul is complex. We are horrified by tragic accidents, but we want to watch too. Every killing is a waste of human life, but the dangling and twitching of Saddam Hussein is one of the most viewed clips in history that's forever imprinted in our collective memory. It didn't make me feel any remorse and I certainly wasn't horrified. There are worse ways to die and he deserved it, I guess... But I digress, go see the movie, rent it, buy it and you'll find yourself surfing the net for answers, movies and clips!!!

Not Impressed

I watched this movie because it sounded like a cool idea for a film playing up the documentary but subtly including a fictional element. Unfortunately, it's pretty boring despite all the horrifying content. Skip this one. There are better ways to spend two hours of your life.

Sleeping well (not)

This movie tries to show us humand depths. It also was something I would call mockumentary, but I saw that this particulary was called hoaxumentary. Because it pretends to be a documentary when it isn't. I thought mockumentary covered that, but I won't get into sementics over that.

It's a nice try but this never reaches "Funny games" levels of quality. It's intentions are the same, even if in another category. Not found footage, not real, but an interesting experiment overall I'd say. It's the one idea that tries to carry a whole movie and the atention of the viewer. Doesn't quite work in the long run, but could make for an interesting watch for some

Misogynistic Neo-Snuff
Aquarient5 December 2012
When the narrator/director of the film begins with praising a neighborhood peeping tom for "getting away with it" you can pretty much guess what this is all about. Ostensibly an attempt to uncover the world of proto-snuff and other depraved 'underground film making', it becomes a numbing vehicle for it- tarting itself up with intellectual deconstructions and interviews with the participants of these movies and and ultimately revealing itself as another sad exercise of the... form.

Bitter, sociopathic white males acting out their inner rage by staging graphically detailed depictions of the murder of one woman after another may be a lot of things, but one thing it will never be is *art*. Gaspar Noe's movies are better-produced versions of the same thing, and just as unworthy of your time. Proceed accordingly.

2 Stars for genre fans' ability to harvest anecdotes/background information on these movies and that's about it.

Wow, only one comment?
targosfan130 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Too bad, I guess this most excellent horror spoof is not getting the attention it deserves. Of course, I saw it with the live "reveal" at TIFF, so maybe my impression of it's entertainment value is skewed somewhat. The film itself is a deliberately cheap-looking "documentary" about the sleaziest, most misogynistic face of horror films - the no-budget, horror-porn indie films that exist only to show beautiful women being killed while undressed. Each film crew shown are real, however -- except one! This misdirection fooled my wife and I completely, and we had a huge laugh when the truth was revealed. After the credits rolled the director and lead actor came out to give the punch line. I hope the DVD of this film includes something to approximate the delight we felt at that moment.

When this becomes available (i presume it will - almost everything does, eventually,) rent it, partake of some "attitude adjustment" and watch it in the company of one or more fellow horror fans. Satisfaction or your money back (in Canadian Tire bucks, natch!)

It Wants To Be A Documentary and A Movie/Slasher, It's Not Sure What It Wants To Be.
DarkSpotOn27 May 2023
Well i was bored during the most of the movie. The idea of getting into the depth of extreme cinema producers is a good idea. However the "sub plot" of following the real or fake movie recorder really killed the mood for me. Because it was not fun at all it's adding a plot into a documentary movie.

Fred Vogel the guy that made August Underground films, actually seems like a nice guy when lisening to him. If he was acting like he was in this "documentary" the August Underground films would of been MUCH Better, instead in A. U. Fred is acting totally unrealistic, screaming, yelling constantly.

Another positive for this movie is for bringing movies like Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween into the mix, and amazing movies like Henry and Peeping Tom! However, i think The Poughkeepsie Tapes did a much better job then this movie.

Is this the worst movie ive seen in 2023? Hell no. This is no where near as bad as American Antichrist, Daisies and Pussy Kills.

Excellent Docu-horror film
god_of_wine00720 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A tricky film examining the underground horror film scene, this "documentary" examines the lines between reality and fantasy, the voyeurism of horror and the desensitizing of modern culture. With modern special effects and camera trickery, how do we determine what is really real? In a world where gore and horror films show us the most gruesome deaths, does this cause us to see a real death as looking fake? Could we identify it, or would we pass it off as fake? And with low-budget horror striving for reality, where does the line get drawn? The film interviews horror experts, "scream queens" and several filmmakers, including Eric Rost, creator of voyeuristic stalker/killer films called the "S&Man" series. In this shocking documentary from JT Petty, we delve into these issues with real life examples, but when the documentary makers begin to probe the maker of the S&MAN series deeper, a shocking conclusion will cause you to ask: Did that just really happen?

A really great movie and sure to be a cult hit, S&Man (had its Canadian) premiered at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival.

How Far Is Too Far?...
azathothpwiggins13 November 2021
S&MAN is a real documentary -or is it?- about the very nature of horror films, using interviews with psychologists, an author / horror movie historian, and some (in)famous underground filmmakers (Bill Zebub, Debbie D., etc.). Everyone is interesting, genuine, and in the case of Mr. Zebub, hilarious!

The best thing about S&MAN is the way that J. T. Petty weaves a fictional character into the narrative, making him every bit as believable as the factual subjects. This gives it a sort of MAN BITES DOG feel.

If you love horror movies, or mockumentaries like THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES, then this belongs on your watchlist...
