Bradley Cooper visited Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show to promote the release of American Sniper, and though I haven't heard great things about that movie, at least one good thing came out of it: the world is now aware of Cooper's totally bitchin' air guitar skills.
Skip ahead to about the two minute mark in the video below to see Cooper shred the guitar solo on Neil Young's "Down By The River." As someone who plays guitar, I'll admit that the first minute or so of Cooper's solo wasn't overly impressive, but by the end, he's absolutely killing it, throwing his whole body into it and really going for it. It's obvious that he's practiced this many, many times. If you like what you see, make sure to check out the 2006 documentary Air Guitar Nation, which follows a few contestants as they compete in the first Us air guitar championships.

Why Watch? If 2006′s Air Guitar Nation was a huge party for people who own picks but no axes, this short film from Phil McLean is the opposite — a mockumentary sending the idea of pantomiming the jam with a series of talking heads and punchlines. It’s a nice distraction, but it’s also consistently funny and finds silly ways to raise the stakes leading to a competition that doesn’t even require a montage to win. The real champion? Anyone who can teach us that sweet air cowbell maneuver. What will it cost? Only 8 minutes. Skip Work. Watch More Short Films.

This review was originally published on May 12, 2011. It is being reposted for the doc's home video release. Jeffrey Blitz's "Spellbound" is kind of like the "Die Hard" of documentaries. The Oscar-nominated hit from 2002 has kicked off many an imitator over the past decade, in which films could be referred to as "'Spellbound' in an air guitar contest" ("Air Guitar Nation"), "'Spellbound' with junior tennis players" ("Unstrung") and "'Spellbound' with go-karts" ("Racing Dreams"). Just this past week we saw the NYC opening of the "'Spellbound' at a Monopoly competition" film (aka "Under the Boardwalk," which also plays Austin…...

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you. Three, four, better lock your door. Five, six, grab your crucifix. Seven, eight, gonna stay up late. Nine, ten, never sleep again.
And with those bone-chilling lyrics, director Wes Craven unspooled a horror bad guy for the ages who is still the king of the movie villain hill. Heather Langenkamp’s portrayal of Nancy Thompson is as American as apple pie. She was the girl next door who knew how to look pretty and kick your ass at the same time. Chicago – We’ve been working our way through the schedule for the upcoming 46th Annual Chicago International Film Festival, kicking off tonight with the premiere of “Stone,” starring Edward Norton, Robert De Niro, and Milla Jovovich. While this year’s festival includes a few high-profile films with A-list stars, we’ve dipped below the line, watching screeners of films that might slide below your radar. Here are the highlights of the opening weekend and into the beginning of next week covering October 7th to October 12th, 2010 (and come back next week for the rest).
The best films of the opening act include an amazing Chicago-set documentary about poetry, a small drama starring two potential future stars, a Russian existential piece, an Australian thriller, and two more documentaries about the transformative sociological power of art. Can anyone give me the definition of “talent,” PopWatchers? Apparently the judges of Agt and I have a difference of opinion. After some questionable decisions on Tuesday night (and your comments yesterday), I’m pretty confident we’re all a little confused by the acts the judges decided to advance. Like Airpocalypse (yes, that would be the air band). These self-proclaimed “underdogs” lived to play another day, by getting a ticket to Hollywood. Do you like their schtick? Documentaries that rock, about people that rock. That seems to be my critical kryptonite. Despite the fact that it was silly and a tad schmaltzy, I loved Air Guitar Nation. Despite the fact that it was drab and unfocused, I really enjoyed It Might Get Loud. And now, despite the fact that it's bloated and overstays its welcome in its last hour, I was absolutely blown away by Lemmy.

Looks like yet another non-fiction film is about to get a dramatic feature remake: Marshall Curry’s Racing Dreams was optioned for adaptation by DreamWorks earlier this week. The movie, which was produced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, follows three kids who compete in the World Karting Association’s National Championship, in the hopes of one day becoming Nascar drivers. The remake is being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of Transformers and Star Trek. Does this mean the go karts will transform into giant robots? Hopefully. Strangely, a ton of documentaries have been optioned by Hollywood lately, including The King of Kong, Sherman’s March, Ring of Fire, Crazy Love, Planet B-Boy, Air Guitar Nation and Young@Heart. (Did I miss any?) The documentary fan in me says that these movies don’t need remakes, and that the original films could play just as well to a...

Justin Theroux is heading to space. The actor-cum-writer is on board to pen a draft of "Space Invader," an astronaut romantic comedy set up at Fox.
Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger sold the project and penned the original draft of the comedy, which centers on a man who decides to go to space after he suspects that his longtime girlfriend, an astronaut, is cheating on him with another spacewalker. Will Arnett is attached to star.
Davis Entertainment, the production company behind comedies like "The Heartbreak Kid," is on board to produce with Principato/Young. The project originally was set up at Fox Atomic before migrating to big Fox after the shuttering of that division.
The UTA- and 3 Arts-repped Theroux, who could potentially direct the title as well, has been honing his writing chops. He penned the comedy hit "Tropic Thunder" at Paramount and wrote the upcoming Marvel/Par pic "Iron Man 2.

New York -- "I'm With Cancer" scribe Will Reiser is in talks to write "Young@Heart," Working Title's narrative remake of Fox Searchlight's singing-senior documentary.
Working Title acquired remake rights to "Heart" in 2007, with the project now potentially getting a new burst of development. Bob Nelson wrote a previous draft of the screenplay.
Stephen Walker's original "Heart" tells the story of a group of Northampton, Mass., seniors who, under the tutelage of a younger choir director, sing versions of songs from artists such as The Clash, Coldplay and James Brown.
In addition to reveling in the comedy of seniors performing blues and punk numbers, it also focuses on the lives of the performers, several of whom passed away during the course of production.
The pic earned $4 million domestically in a difficult climate for documentaries.

As I mentioned in a post a couple of days ago [1], there have been a ton of documentaries related to heavy metal lately, and one that sort of fits into that category as well is Alexandra Lipsitz's Air Guitar Nation. Documenting the Us and World Air Guitar Championships from a few years back, the movie is more about performance art than music specifically, but either way it's a lot of fun. Now it looks like the documentary is about to be brought to a wider audience as part of a fictional comedy as well. According to THR's Risky Business Blog [2], Tropic Thunder writer Justin Theroux has signed on to produce a movie for Paramount called simply Air Guitar, set in the world of competitive air guitar. He will not actually be the one writing the script however; those duties will fall to Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger (Just Shoot Me!

If you've ever held witness to an "air guitar" competition, then you will undoubtedly share in my excitement for this next story. In early 2007, I had the honor of catching Alexandra Lipsitz's ferociously entertaining documentary Air Guitar Nation (read my review) during its extremely limited theatrical run. Later that year, fellow Fat Guy at the Movies Kevin Carr and I attended a regional air guitar competition in Columbus, Ohio and met Dan Crane (aka rocker Bjorn Turoque, pictured above with David "C-Diddy" Jung), one of the stars of the doc. It was an energetic, rockin' affair that has stuck with me ever since. So much so that earlier this year, I decided that the most rockin' double feature of all-time would be a double-bill of Air Guitar Nation and this year's sensation Anvil! The Story of Anvil. Trust me, that two-some of rock odysseys would blow your mind. I tell you that story to tell you...

Tropic Thunder producer Justin Theroux has joined up with Paramount to produce the comedy flick Air Guitar.
Inspired by recent looks at air guitar, including the documentary Air Guitar Nation and the book To Air is Human, the movie will be a humorous take on world of competitive air guitar (yes, there is such a thing).
Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger will be writing the script for Paramount, and while no specific plot has been revealed yet, the movie will likely follow the classic theme of underdog-rising-to-fame.
Air Guitar still has a ways to go before it can hit production, but hopefully as more is revealed about the film it continues to sound as entertaining as it does just as a concept.

Now this sounds like a very fun project. Earlier in the week it was announced (via the Risky Biz Blog) that actor/writer Justin Theroux (who last produced Tropic Thunder) would be signing on to produce Air Guitar, a story set in the competitive world of air guitar. The comedy was originally based on and inspired by the popular documentary Air Guitar Nation and the book To Air Is Human written by Dan Crane, who plays under the name Bjorn Turoque. Paramount has now brought on up-and-coming writers Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger ("Just Shoot Me!", "Teachers") to pen the script with Theroux producing and developing. Theroux is not considering directing or acting in Air Guitar at this time, which means this still needs a director. It was originally a DreamWorks project, but it ended up at Paramount once the studios split. In regards to the story, I'm pretty sure...

I feel like Justin Theroux is becoming some kind of muse to the masses, gently introducing them to the offbeat and cool before moving onto something else. The majority of American moviegoers probably don't know his name, but they feel his influence. Someday, every man in America will start wearing fedoras again, and not really know why. The reason will be Theroux. But first, he plans to hook everyone on Air Guitar, and introduce the masses to the offbeat world that cherishes the talent.
Variety reports that Theroux has signed on to produce Paramount's Air Guitar, a story centered around the self-consciously ironic world of air guitar championships. The project has been in the works at Paramount since 2006 or so, and is cobbled together from the 2006 documentary Air Guitar Nation and Dan Crane's book To Air Is Human. As if you couldn't tell by our review, we love Anvil! The Story of Anvil. It's a fantastic documentary about an earnest band just trying to make it big in a world that seems to have passed them by. There's nothing pretentious about them, nothing false or phony. The film tells the story of a major metal band that somehow never broke through. - Opening in select New York City theaters today is director Alexandra Lipsitz’s debut feature-length documentary Air Guitar Nation. The film tells the story of how competitive air guitar came to the United States, which up until 2003, had never sent an official contender to the World Air Guitar Championships held annually in Finland. What is air guitar? It’s that thing people do, mimicking holding an instrument and rocking out, usually reserved for those times when they just lose themselves in a song. In competitive air guitar, performers get up on stage and have one minute to totally rock out to a music selection of their choice. They are judged on technical merit, stage presence, and ‘airness’ – “the level to which their performance transcends mimicry and becomes and art form in and of itself.” Basically, air guitar is pure rock and roll, or rock and roll in it’s purest form,

Rock stardom has been a source of fascination for many of us who’ve have yet to pick up a guitar or for that matter a guitar pick – and this fascination is now the source of a new documentary film tapping into this phenomenon. Alexandra Lipsitz’s doc tells the battle of naked ambition played out on the national and, ultimately, world stage, Air Guitar Nation chronicles the birth of the Us Air Guitar Championships as legions of aspiring rock stars live out their dreams on a quest to become the world champion in a strange world where musical ability plays second fiddle to virtual virtuosity.
