Cracks – Alex’s Review

“What’s the most important thing in life?”

Don’t answer yet! Think about it very carefully first.

After all, it’s a pretty big question. In fact, do they come any bigger? Probably not and yet for a group of young girls growing up in 1934. The answer might be quite simple. A husband, security, money, a nice house, kids. All the basic things a young woman was told to aspire to back in the 30s.

However, for a group of girls being taught at a school by Miss G these are the very things to avoid.

The glamorous young teacher fills her diving lessons with instructions on rebellion, the wonders of travel, of becoming strong and independent. Have adventures and make sure you answer to nobody but yourself is her message. The group hang on her every word and head girl Di (Juno Temple) is especially hypnotised by her teachers’ charms. »

Two New Clips from 'The Lovely Bones'

28 November 2009 8:11 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The Lovely Bones is well-positioned, if nothing else, to play spoiler at the Academy Awards. It could be a vote-splitter in a couple categories, although Best Picture and Best Director don't seem to be the ones you hear about.

Best Supporting Actor has some legs, though, since Stanley Tucci is about as good as it gets, he's worked with everybody, and has never been in this position before. If nothing else, he could be due for a nomination here.

There are a couple new clips for Bones, one featuring Tucci, who looks extra creepy, and one featuring Saoirse Ronan from Atonement. Check 'em out: »

Having made quite an impression with her performance as teenage Briony Tallis in "Atonement",

Saoirse Ronan moves on with the role of Susie Salmon in "The Lovely Bones". A closer look at her performance as the murdered girl has been put out through a newly-released clip courtesy of MySpace.

In the one-minute plus clip, Ronan shares screen with Reece Ritchie who plays Susie's love interest named Ray Singh. The Prince of Wales to Attend ‘Lovely Bones’ Premiere

24 November 2009 5:56 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

I’m under the impression (and I may be totally, completely wrong) that Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Lovely Bones will be a really good film that’s destined to be overshadowed by Avatar at an end-of-the-year release date. In my opinion, the film has gotten nowhere near the amount of exposure it has needed or deserved, but perhaps this is just due to an audience of readers that already knew they were buying tickets when the movie was released.

One of those people attending the world premiere of the film today in London’s Leicester Square is one of the biggest names you can get: the Prince of Wales, alongside the Duchess of Cornwall. I’m unfamiliar with how premiere’s usually work in the U.K. — does royalty often attend premieres just as U.S. Presidents are swift to grab screener copies of films for the White House? »

Gerard Butler has been named the best British actor in Hollywood. The Scottish hunk, who is best known for playing King Leonidas in “300,” beat a host of stars, including Christian Bale and double-Oscar winner and Irish citizen Daniel Day Lewis to win the title in a poll of more than 1,000 British film fans by the DVD rental service LoveFilm. “Revolutionary Road” actress Kate Winslet, who managed to land fourth place, was one of only two women to feature in the top 10. “Atonement” star James McAvoy came in fifth ahead of Hugh Laurie of “House,” at six. “Twilight” actor Robert Pattinson came seventh despite the huge popularity of the vampire franchise. “Transporter” star Jason Statham landed the eight spot and Scottish actor Ewan McGregor ranked ninth. Emily Blunt of “The Devil Wears Prada” rounded out the top 10. Helen Cowley, the editor at LoveFilm, believes the poll shows 40-year-old “P.S. I Love You »

Rumors Vs. Facts: Casting war! Anne Hathaway, Julia Stiles, Rachel McAdams, Romola Garai in SpiderMan 4?

19 November 2009 9:50 PM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Four awesome young actresses are reported/rumored to be positioning themselves for a possible role in the next Spiderman movie. The character in contention: The Black Cat.

But before we go any further, is this newsworthy? Definitely. While it maybe just a fictional character, Black Cat is quite interesting and intriguing. She's been related to Spiderman in the past and her descent into the world of crime is worth a good look. Has casting actually started? No confirmation yet from the studio, but with the names of the actresses being mentioned, fans are, indeed, getting excited.

Two of these fab actresses are known for both period and contemporary films - Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married/Becoming Jane) and Romola Garai ( Inside I'm Dancing/Atonement), while the other two - Julia Stiles and Rachel McAdams are more 'inclined' to portray modern characters, or so it seems... As of this writing, McAdams is already out of contention. »

Film Weekly: Romola Garai and The Twilight Saga: New Moon

19 November 2009 4:37 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This week Film Weekly goes from Britain on the eve of the second world war with Stephen Poliakoff's Glorious 39, to the American midwest in the 60s with the Coen brothers' A Serious Man, to the fangtastical environs of contemporary Washington state in The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

First up, Jason Solomons meets rising star Romola Garai, who adds to an impressive CV (Atonement, Angel, Vanity Fair) by appearing in almost every scene in Glorious 39, a conspiracy thriller based on true events in Chamberlain's government. She tells Jason how the film plays with the nature of the truth and why it's the "twisted sister" to her breakthrough film I Capture the Castle, plus how she can never live down Dirty Dancing 2.

Xan Brooks then joins Jason to review the week's key releases: the Coen brothers' fascinating, brilliantly acted A Serious Man, Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh's "too clever" The Informant! »

How Many Actresses Will Be Rumored for Black Cat?

19 November 2009 1:36 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Ever since Rachel McAdams laughed off the rumors that she would be cast as Black Cat in Spider-Man 4, the role has become one of the hottest topics around. McAdams never auditioned or met with producers about it, but Romola Garai did. I like Garai (the grown-up Saoirse Ronan in Atonement), but there's not a whole lot of name recognition there.

Then there was news that Julia "Furious" Stiles had a chat about the role, although I just have a hard time seeing that. I certainly can't see that selection over McAdams, at any rate, who apparently was never asked. And now Nikki Finke has learned that Anne Hathaway has been "approached" for the part of Black Cat. Hathaway...Dunst...way to stock up on overrated actresses, Sam Raimi. »

Exclusive Buzz: Pfeiffer with Pfangs

17 November 2009 6:57 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Rumor Alert!

Or, rather, 'Possiblity Alert'! And one you haven't heard yet. The other evening at a dinner party, I chatted briefly with writer/director Amy Heckerling (of Clueless fame). Since her very last feature I Could Never Be Your Woman starred Michelle Pfeiffer, you know I couldn't resist gushing about my favorite actress. The conversation quickly drifted to Saoirse Ronan, who played Pfeiffer's daughter in that film. Heckerling was very proud to have discovered her (...Woman preceeding Atonement, production-wise) and wouldn't you be?

Leaving the party later, I wished Heckerling well on her new comedy Vamps which should go before cameras in the spring. Remembering me as that weirdly obsessed pfan-guy, Heckerling clasped her hands together in supplication and said 'I hope I get Pfeiffer for it.'

[Collective Pfan Gasp!]

Has an offer gone out? Could Pfeiffer finally have a vampiric role? The movie is still in preproduction with only Kristen Ritter signed. »

Joe Wright to Tackle Action With 'Hanna'

17 November 2009 3:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The director of Atonement, The Soloist, and Pride & Prejudice is jumping into the action pool? That's what The Hollywood Reporter indicates: Director Joe Wright, best known for Oscar-friendly drama, is about to sign on the dotted line to helm Hanna, which THR describes as a La Femme Nikita style project: "The story centers on a 14-year-old Eastern European girl who has been raised by her father to be a cold-blooded killing machine. She connects with a French family, forms a friendship with their daughter and goes through the pangs of adolescence. When the girl is dragged back to her father's world and discovers that she was bred as a killing machine in a CIA prison camp, she must fight her way to a free life."

Sounds to me like a fairly conventional, rather familiar tale -- so then why were Danny Boyle and Alfonso Cuaron both (briefly) attached to the project? »

Glorious 39

Poliakoff has made his most recent step up to feature film one of the most dramatic, harrowing tales of the year. It is a shame then that what makes this film most enjoyable is also what dampens its brilliance. Stephen Poliakoff’s return to the big screen has not been a timid one. Predominantly a TV writer, Poliakoff has made his most recent step up to feature film one of the most dramatic, harrowing tales of the year. It is a shame then that what makes this film most enjoyable is also, when applied too heavily, what dampens its brilliance. Set around a wealthy, influential MP’s family as the country is on the cusp of entering a war with Germany for the second time, the story centres around the adopted daughter Anne (Romola Garai, Atonement) and her intuitive suspicions surrounding the death of family friend, and overly vocal advocator of the war on Hitler, »

And Now For Something Completely Different: Joe Wright Directs Hanna

17 November 2009 3:33 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Joe Wright has earned a reputation for directing films like Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, but after his latest production Indian Summer with Cate Blanchett fell into budgetary disarray, he decided to halt the production and jump ship to an action film, the assassin flick Hanna. Heat Vision has the details: The project has garnered considerable attention in director circles since getting set up at Focus in 2007, with Danny Boyle kicking its tires as a directing vehicle at one point and Alfonso Cuaron circling it in recent weeks. The project is described as having shades of “La Femme Nikita” and the “Bourne” movies. Wright directs Hanna

So The Soloist may have landed with a bit of thud, but Joe Wright is still the man behind Atonement and Pride And Prejudice, so the announcement of his next project is rather ear-catching.
