When it was announced that Chris Rock would be remaking the Danish film Another Round, there was some knee-jerk concern that the comedian may not be able to nail the tone of the original. Personally, I think Rock is an intelligent enough guy to (hopefully) not turn it into a raucous, sloppy mess that the plot, on paper only, suggests. Now, Another Round director Thomas Vinterberg is weighing in on Rock having a go at a remake.
Vinterberg recently told the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet (as translated by NME) that he has faith in Chris Rock taking on Another Round, saying, “The choice of Chris Rock is exciting. It’s exciting [to see] what he comes up with. I am full of good expectations.” Vinterberg then joked, “If it’s shit, he’ll get slapped again,” obviously referring to the 2022 incident in which Rock was attacked by Will Smith after joking about wife Jada.

Exclusive: Chris Rock has made a deal to develop to direct Another Round, based on the 2020 Thomas Vinterberg-directed black comedy that won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film as well as the BAFTA.
The film is an Appian Way and Makeready production for Fifth Season. Jennifer Davisson and Leonardo DiCaprio are producing for Appian Way, and Brad Weston and Collin Creighton are producing for Makeready. Stuart Bloomberg wrote a draft and they will now bring in a new writer to work with Rock.
Rock has made directing a priority, and adds this to a Universal-based adaptation of King: A Life, the Jonathan Eig book about Martin Luther King Jr., along with an untitled script Rock is writing that has Peter Rice producing.

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.
The big Original movie premiere in January is Self Reliance, which follows a middle-aged dude (Jake Johnson) who gets randomly invited into a limo by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, and is soon offered...

Comedian and actor Chris Rock is in final talks to direct and produce a biopic on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with Steven Spielberg serving as an executive producer through his production company Amblin Partners.
The project will be an adaptation of “King: A Life,” a critically acclaimed biography of the civil rights leader written by Jonathan Eig and published earlier this year. The book draws from recently released documents related to King. These range from personal letters to White House telephone transcripts and FBI documents related to director J. Edgar Hoover’s hostile and racist surveillance of King.
It was not immediately clear whether Rock will also star in the film. He has played the lead in the three features he’s previously directed, as well as writing them.
The last feature Rock directed was 2014’s “Top Five.” Before that, he directed 2007’s “I Think I Love My Wife” and 2003’s “Head of State.

A new bestselling Martin Luther King Jr. biography is set to get the movie treatment, and according to Deadline, polarizing comedian Chris Rock is nearly set to direct the adaptation. The actor and comic is apparently in final talks to both direct and produce a movie version of Jonathan Eig's "King: A Life," a National Book Award nominee and bestseller that hit shelves in May.
This will be the first dramatic feature from Rock, whose previous directorial efforts include the 2003 comedy "Head of State" and two rom-coms, "I Think I Love My Wife" and "Top Five." Rock starred in all three films, with the latter released in 2014, making the new feature the comic's first return to feature filmmaking in nearly a decade. This news seems pretty unexpected for the man who's best known for edgy comedy, but another name attached to the project is even more surprising: Steven Spielberg.

Chris Rock is in final negotiations to direct and produce a biopic based on the life of Martin Luther King Jr. at Universal, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
The film, which will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg, will be based on “King: A Life,” Jonathan Eig’s new biography that Universal has optioned and that The New York Times called the “definitive” bio of MLK Jr. and the first comprehensive account of his life in decades.
The project will be produced by Amblin Partners, with Kristie Macosko Krieger serving as producer, and Spielberg as EP.
“King: A Life” was a Nyt Bestseller and a National Book Award nominee. The book utilizes new FBI information from previously untapped primary sources and hundreds of interviews. Eig presents King Jr. as courageous but emotionally troubled, someone who demanded peaceful protest but also grappled with his own frailties.

For many people, Chris Rock might just be known for his iconic stand-up comedy routines. For others, he may be just the guy that shows up from time to time in Adam Sandler films. But in recent years, Rock has been shattering preconceived notions about his abilities and tackling some incredibly interesting work such as the lead in the new season of “Fargo” and as a producer-star of the upcoming “Saw” spinoff horror film, “Spiral.” He’s also a filmmaker in his own right, writing and directing films such as “Head of State,” “I Think I Love My Wife,” and “Top FIve.” And apparently, Rock has a couple more feature scripts he’s finished that will continue to prove his range.

ABC’s female-led vampire soap opera pilot “The Brides” has cast Gina Torres in one of the lead roles, Variety has learned.
The project is described as a contemporary reimagining of “Dracula” with a trio of female leads. The show would follow these immortal women and the things they do to maintain wealth, prestige, legacy, and their nontraditional family.
Torres will star as Cleo, one of the three Brides of Dracula and the leader of the main vampire trio. Cleo is described as an imperious woman with a queenly manner — understandably, as she was a queen in her former life, who was turned by Dracula after the death of her husband.
Now a maven of New York City real estate, Cleo is challenged professionally by a mysterious newcomer, even as her ties to her sisters are dangerously fraying.

Chris Rock is teaming with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures for a fresh reimagining on the next Saw movie. The comedy multi-hyphenate has written a story which is being adapted by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, and Rock will also executive produce.
Lionsgate has dated the film for an Oct. 23, 2020 release.
“When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in,” said Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake. “Saw is one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all-time and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative...

It's official. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has announced that Chris Rock will return to host the 88th Academy Awards coming up in late February next year. This will be the second time that Rock hosts the Oscars, as he first hosted them back in 2005 (when Million Dollar Baby won). He has not been nominated yet, but Rock returns as a successful filmmaker this time, having made the films I Think I Love My Wife and Top Five since last hosting. "Chris Rock is truly the Mvp of the entertainment industry," said producers David Hill & Reginald Hudlin. "Comedian, actor, writer, producer, director, documentarian – he's done it all. He's going to be a phenomenal Oscar host!" And he's funny. Bring on the Oscar season. The Academy's announcement comes with a whole host of praise and appreciation for Chris Rock: “I'm so glad to be hosting the Oscars,” said Rock.

The stand-up’s second directorial effort is smart, scathing and tackles several important subjects. Which makes its fumbling of others all the more jarring
British cinemas are stuck in a cycle of risk aversion. Distributors lack adventurousness, and when they do take a chance on an unknown entity, liberal audiences applaud them all the way to a neighbouring screen where Minions is playing for the 15th week in a row. This situation causes problems across the board, but its effects are felt most by the kinds of films routinely cited as UK box-office poison: baseball movies, Christian dramas and – most damagingly – films with black leads.
Chris Rock’s latest directorial effort, Top Five, hits DVD this week after a dire performance in UK cinemas back in May. The film directly tackles the limited opportunities available to films with black protagonists – at least those who aren’t trapped in the ’hood...

Chris Rock's latest outing is a semi-autobiographical take on the rise and fall (and rise?) of a comedy star...
Your mileage may vary on inside-track Hollywood comedies. Among the greats, there are biting satires like The Player or Swimming With Sharks and broader, sillier works like Tropic Thunder or Bowfinger, but the kind of rarefied air in which they largely unfold can sometimes be suffocating.
Thankfully, that's not the case with Top Five, Chris Rock's first project as a writer-director since 2007's I Think I Love My Wife, and inarguably his best so far. With a semi-autobiographical approach, the film clearly has a lot of influences from other films but thrives on a brand of charm that is entirely its own.
Andre Allen (Rock) is a stand-up comedian turned movie star who is best known for a trilogy of cringe-making comedy movies in which he stars as a crime-fighting bear called Hammy.

Over the course of film history, we've seen plenty of long-time actors step behind the camera to take up their directorial ambitions. Clint Eastwood did it. Mel Gibson did it. George Clooney did it. What do these three have in commonc Well, for starters, they are all men, so there's that. Further, they are all white, but more on that later. More to the point of the article, these men all eased into their directorial careers by starring in their respective debuts, using their presence on screen to help market their talents off it. And with his feature directorial effort The Water Diviner, which hits limited theaters this week, Russell Crowe is just the most recent addition to a growing list of actors who have decided to try their hand behind the camera. Like Eastwood, Gibson, and Clooney before him, the Best Actor winner stars in his first feature as director,...

"Top Five" is a comeback of sorts for Chris Rock, a celebrated stand-up comic and TV host whose filmic ventures have ranged from successful (the "Madagascar" animated franchise) to not so much ("Pootie Tang," "I Think I Love My Wife," the critically drubbed "Grown Ups" films). But with "Top Five," which he wrote, directed, and stars in, he has gotten the best reviews of his film career. So why were he and the film snubbed at the Golden Globes? -Break- Shocking Golden Globes snubs: Angelina Jolie (twice), Bradley Cooper, ... The film has scored 81 on MetaCritic and 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Manohla Dargis (New York Times) calls it "fast and blisteringly funny … a romantic comedy that’s also an extended riff on art, identity, authenticity and what it means to be a black entertainer." Ridley Scott's latest epic historical movie hit theaters this weekend and while it took an easy number one, there wasn't anything historic or epic about its box office performance. Exodus: Gods and Kings debuted at the top spot with $24 million. Scott's directorial efforts are always hit and miss when it comes to box office openings, but this not only marks one of the lower for his career, but also low compared to another Biblical epic that opened this year. Darren Aronofsky's Noah, considered to be far more controversial and notably less broad in its appeal opened at $40 million. Chris Rock's comedy Top Five, which he wrote, directed and starred in, opened at number four with $7 million. That's only a small step up from the $5 million opening his last acting/directing double effort I Think I Love My Wife back in 2007. For the full weekend top ten check...

Exodus: Gods and Kings missed the mark this weekend, though it still easily ruled over another very quiet weekend at the box office.Meanwhile, Chris Rock's Top Five got off to a decent start, and Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice did big business at a few theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The Top 12 earned $76.7 million, which makes this one of the slowest weekends of the year. Business will pick up next weekend, though it does look like this will be one of the worst Decembers in recent memory.Playing at 3,503 locations, Exodus: Gods and Kings opened to an estimated $24.1 million this weekend. That doesn't compare favorably to this year's previous Biblical movies, as its nearly $20 million lower than Noah's debut and roughly on par with the much-less-expensive Son of God.That's not really an apples-to-apples comparison, though, as opening weekends in December are historically muted. Still,...

With the holiday season approaching, there are a lot of movies out there vying not just for attention from awards voters this December, but from audiences too. And over the next couple weeks, there's something for everyone at the box office, from family films to the annual Oscar bait to Ya action to the final chapter in a certain juggernaut fantasy franchise. But if you haven't already, you should go ahead and add Chris Rock's "Top Five" to your December movie wishlist.
In the film (which he also wrote and directed), Rock stars as Andre Allen, a formerly beloved comedian trying to make the transition to "serious actor" status with his latest movie, a failed Oscar-bait retelling of the Haitian Revolution. At the same time, his reality-star fiancée (Gabrielle Union) plans their made-for-tv wedding and a New York Times reporter (Rosario Dawson) attempts to interview Allen about the reason behind his sudden career shift.

Rude, crude, and lewd as it is, Top Five is still a big step forward for Chris Rock as a filmmaker. In essence, that's because it more closely resembles his brilliant stand-up shows, where he gets on a roll and never stops moving, darting into raw social issues and then drawing them out into extended set-pieces, filled with piercing insights. This movie feels substantially different than the broadly-aimed Head of State (2003) or the faux-sophisticated I Think I Love My Wife (2007), which drowned in earnest romance. Top Five only stumbles when it stops to make a point, or when it arcs off-course with an absurd plot twist or two. Rock's character in the movie, Andre Allen, is a 'what if'' variation of himself: What...

"Top Five" opens in theaters this Friday, December 12, 2014. When’s the last time Chris Rock made a funny movie, really? His filmography in recent years has been riddled with mediocrity - the dismal “Grown Ups” franchise, “Madagascar” and its endless sequels. A look at his earlier comedies reveals that while Rock has always been an undeniably funny stand-up comic, paint-by-numbers movies like “Head of State” and “Down to Earth” failed to really highlight his strengths and his potential as both an actor and comedian. We’ve had a few brief glimpses of another side to Rock as filmmaker and film star - even his 2007 flop “I Think I Love My Wife,” with its many problems, showed...

I honestly didn't know Chris Rock had this in him. As a stand-up, Rock is one of the greats. The way he evolved was incredibly impressive, and by the time he released "Bring The Pain," he was in complete command of his craft. He knew how to ride an audience to victory. On film, though, I don't think Rock has ever even approached mastering things the way he has with live performance. He's done stuff I've enjoyed, and one of the things that made his early work noteworthy was just how extreme he was. His scene in "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" was one of that film's biggest laughs for me. For literally years afterwards, the thought of "One rib!" would kill me all over again. He got to play with Eddie Murphy in "Boomerang," and I remember being excited to see the two of them in a scene, knowing...

I was certainly surprised when the film I heard the most about coming out of this year's Toronto International Film Festival was Chris Rock's latest outing in the directors chair, Top Five. Rock's previous films (Head of State, I Think I Love My Wife) were not stellar by any means, but he is a smart, funny, and talented guy. I knew he would make at least one film that clicked. I will be seeing the film next week and am quite excited to see what the fuss is about. Well, for those of you who need a little something from the film to hold you over until you see it, a new red band trailer for Top Five is available for you all to watch below. I am not only avoiding the trailer because I like avoiding trailers, but this is a comedy, and I do not want jokes...

It would not be wrong to suggest that "Top Five" is Chris Rock as you've never seen him before. Yes, Rock has directed, written, and starred in movies previously, but "Top Five" is exceptionally different from "I Think I Love my Wife" and "Head of State." The movie features Rock as a stand-up comedian turned comic actor, Andre Allen, who is trying to move away from comedy and towards dramatic fare. On the day his new movie, the tale of a slave revolt in Haiti, opens, he is shadowed by a reporter from the New York Times, Chelsea Brown (Rosario Dawson), who is doing a piece on him. It proves a learning experience for both characters. "Top Five," is a look at celebrity, what it means to be a celebrity, and what actors can endure on a day-to-day basis. Rather than a woe-is-me tale of how awful it is to be rich and famous,...

20. Love/Chloe in the Afternoon (1972)
Directed by: Éric Rohmer
Originally titled “Love in the Afternoon,” but released in North America as “Chloe in the Afternoon,” this Rohmer film is a tale of possible infidelity, seen through the eyes of a conflicted man. Frédéric (Bernard Verley) is a successful young lawyer who is happily married to a teacher named Hélène (Françoise Verley), who is pregnant with their second child. While Frédéric is in a considerably good place in his life, he still struggles with the loss of excitement he had before he married, when he could sleep with whomever he chose. It wasn’t so much the sex that thrilled him, but the chase itself. Still, he feels that these thoughts and fantasies, paired with his refusal to act upon them, only proves that he is completely dedicated and in love with his own wife. That is, until he meets Chloé...

Sometimes if the parts aren't coming to you, you simply need to create them. It's an old story in the entertainment business and the genesis of Chris Rock's fantastic new flick "Top Five." Rock has won four Emmy Awards and is known as being one of the top stand-up comics of his generation, but if he was going to make something "meaningful" on the big screen he was going to have to do some soul searching. That meant trying to make a movie better than the previous films he either wrote or directed, including "Down to Earth" (screenplay), "Head of State" (wrote and directed) and the underrated "I Think I Love My Wife," arguably his most personal work before "Top Five." Speaking to HitFix this past weekend, Rock says his thought process was: "If I want to work in the type of movies that I want to work in,...
