Sex & Nudity

  • An elderly man is seen showering, but no nudity is shown.
  • Bilous and Violet are in a relationship and act romantically.

Violence & Gore

  • The violence in this film is rather surprising for a PG rated film.
  • There are multiple stabbings, many offscreen. One man is stabbed onscreen and thrown off a cart, but no or little blood is shown. A character is implied to be stabbed.
  • A man has a red-hot poker thrown at him and it protrudes from him graphically for about 4 seconds.
  • Several guards are strangled and stabbed. They fall over, but disappear in seconds. Another is thrown from a tall balcony. These guards appear to fall onto roofs of houses. Non-graphic, no blood.
  • A man is thrown down a flight of stairs and killed, no blood is shown.
  • An event is described in which a character is beheaded and his dog nailed to the roof. This event is not shown.
  • A kindly and afraid character is cut up with blades and shears offscreen.
  • A caring and kindly female character has her hair pulled back viciously by a psychopathic character.
  • A group of wolves is thrown off a cliff. Just before this event one of the main protagonists (essentially, Santa Claus) takes the form of a wild boar and is mauled viciously by the same wolves.
  • A motherly figure dissolves a man-child type character with her ghostly powers.

Profanity

  • Some uses of British slang terms and profanities (bugger, bloody etc.)
  • Much name-calling and many mild profanities.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Albert smokes and likes cigars and cigarettes, but he is basically an undead character, and this is played for laughs when he lights cigars with his fingers, which set on fire.
  • Some characters are seen drinking in background scenes, and a group of people at a house party act as if they are drunk. One of the main characters is "The Oh God of Hangovers", who constantly feels the effects of people drinking, and when he is given a hangover cure he orders strong alcoholic drinks, as he can finally actually drink the drinks himself.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The constant presence of an anthromorphic personification of Death can be frightening to children, though comedic and kindly in this film.
  • Mr. Teatime can be scary, as he is sadistic and cruel, and has several rapist parallels which make him quite creepy.
  • The Auditors of Reality are, though comical, quite scary in appearance.
  • The film is full of black comedy, which may (though not intended to do so) upset or anger viewers.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Mr. Teatime falls from a balcony and comes crashing through a university roof. He is not dead.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A tear-jerking scene which this film is well known for is the Little Match Girl dying in the street, when Death and Albert are walking by. Death turns around, but Albert says that the girl dying is all part of the spirit of Hogswatch, the equivalent of Christmas on the Discworld. Death saves the Little Match Girl and gives her to people to care for her and comfort her, and this is very heart-warming, but the start is very sad.
  • The horrific deaths of the Gang Members can be quite scary, as they are killed by a world which turns on them and lets their childhood fears loose to murder them. Chickenwire is dragged into a cupboard which he was scared of when he was younger, whilst screaming and jerking uncontrollably. Medium Dave meets the ghost of his mother, who sends down a cloud of black smoke which dissolves him. Mr. Sideney hears the sounds of shears following him, making up a creature he was scared of as a child called "The Scissor Man". Shadows of scissors and razors close in on him, and scissors are seen to cut away at his hair, edging closer towards his throat. The camera blacks out, but it is implied that he is decapitated, before the rest of him is cut up.
