Monopoly Movie Is a "Metaphor for Life"

13 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

When first announced way back in February 2008 that Universal had signed a six-year deal with Hasbro to produce film adaptations of many of the company's classic board games, more than a few people began scratching their heads and rolling their eyes. Even more surprising was the news that Academy Award-nominted filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott, currently at work on his update of Robin Hood starring Russell Crowe, was attached to direct the Monopoly adaptation.

If you're wondering what attracted the acclaimed director of Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and Body of Lies to a movie about "Uncle Pennybags" and his quest to control the real estate market, just ask Frank Beddor, the man whose plot concept for Monopoly was what won Scott over. Beddor said that after his pitch, Scott shook his hand and said, "What do I have [to do] to be part of this movie?" So, what was the pitch? »

Matt Damon Trailer Double-Bill: ‘Green Zone’ & ‘Invictus’

28 October 2009 10:29 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Just recently a couple of trailers appeared online for two highly-anticipated films starring Matt Damon: Paul GreengrassGreen Zone and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. They are very different types of movies – Green Zone being like Bourne set during the Iraq War and Invictus looking like one of those biopics that is clearly “Oscar-ish.” Check out both of the trailers below.

Green Zone

Green Zone reunites the Bourne director Paul Greengrass and star, Matt Damon, and is a war-drama/thriller about about a pair of CIA agents on the trail of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. We reported back in the summer of this year that Green Zone had been moved from a late 2009 release to March 12th, 2010, leading to some confusion over that why, as the film seems like prime material for the Oscars.

However, as you’ll see in the trailer below – much as was the case »

Paul Greengrass’ Green Zone Trailer Starring Matt Damon

27 October 2009 11:44 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Bourne in Iraq... that's the three word summary that's going to sell this movie for most people, but with any luck the latest collaboration between Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon will be something even more than that. Green Zone is inspired by the book Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, a non-fiction look at the American attempt to set up a transitional government in Iraq. The movie uses this as a jumping off point for a fictional thriller about a group of army inspectors in search of weapons of mass destruction. When I first heard about this film, it was being described in the same vein as Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, but after seeing the trailer it seems more reminiscent of Ridley Scott's Body of Lies... which to me, is a lot less exciting. Still, with a cast that includes Matt Damon, »

Trailer - Matt Damon in Paul Greengrass' 'Green Zone'

27 October 2009 11:09 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Delayed a few months and effectively knocked out of any awards consideration (unless next year is incredibly weak and this film is monumentally strong), Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon have teamed up again for Green Zone.

The film is set in the early days of the Iraq War, with Damon leading a team of Army inspectors into the barren deserts to search for stockpiled weapons of mass destruction. My guess is he didn't find any. There was talk when this film was pushed back to March, the discussion was that Damon's The Informant! would be competitive in the race for trophies and it seldom makes sense to pit two movies from the same leading actor against each other.

However, looking at the trailer, my initial reaction is it could be compared too easily to Body of Lies and The Hurt Locker at various points. So maybe Universal is creating a little distance there, »

Checkmate: An Advance Review of PBS' "Endgame" on "Masterpiece Contemporary"

23 October 2009 8:37 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Apartheid is an ugly word, conjuring up images of racial segregation and hatred from a time in the not-too-distant past of South Africa. PBS' new political thriller Endgame, which airs Sunday evening as part of the public broadcaster's Masterpiece Contemporary wheel, dramatizes not the plight of the common South African man and woman under the draconian decree of apartheid but rather the machinery operating behind the scenes to bring an end to apartheid once and for all. Written by Paula Milne (Second Sight) and directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point), Endgame revolves around a series of secret talks between the Anc and the South African government brokered by Consolidated Goldfields, a multi-national company with vested financial interests in South Africa. The talks took place at an estate in England, far away from the violent rebellion in South Africa, and despite the risk in bringing together these enemies, the open lines »

Jolie and DiCaprio May Go Gucci for Ridley Scott

22 October 2009 1:47 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Angelina Jolie is in discussions for a Ridley Scott project about murder and decadence in the world of high fashion.  Gucci would tell the story of Maurizio Gucci, grandson of company founder Guccio Gucci, who was shot and killed by a contract hitman in 1995.

Jole would play his ex-wife Patrizia Gucci, who was sentenced to 29 years after it was discovered she hired the contract killer.  During the case, Patrizia claimed she was coerced into going with the plot by her personal psychic.

Scott has approached Body of Lies collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio for the male lead, but the extremely busy actor/producer is not attached at this point.  Maybe he’ll find time in his schedule to be (fake) gunned down in front of a mansion.

His death came at the height of the Gucci family business when the dynasty was pushing $500 million in fashion products a year during the 70’s and 80’s. »

Angelina Jolie in Talks to Star in Ridley Scott’s “Gucci”

22 October 2009 6:22 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

According to Variety, Angelina Jolie is in talks with Ridley Scott to play Patrizia Reggiano in his upcoming film “Gucci,” a true-life drama about murder, decadence and the turbulent relations in and around the Gucci fashion dynasty. Scott has approached his “Body of Lies” star Leonardo DiCaprio to play Maurizio, but he is not attached at this point.

The studio is looking to hire a scribe to re-write the drama that recaptures the glamorous days of the Gucci family dynasty in the 1970s and ’80s, when the family was selling $500 million in product annually. Squabbles hobbled the clan until Maurizio, the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci, came out on top of a power struggle to run the family business. Just when he was about to reestablish the brand name by debuting a line designed by newcomer — and now film director — Tom Ford, Maurizio was gunned down in front of his Milan apartment in 1995.

Angelina Jolie as murderer?

22 October 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

Angelina Jolie may play Patrizia Reggiani, who was sentenced to 29 years in prison for killing her husband Maurizio Gucci, the former owner of the luxury label Gucci, in 1995. Although Martin Scorsese was attached to the project a few months ago, the movie will now be directed by Ridley Scott. Angelina Jolie seems to be a sure thing for the female lead, but no male star has yet been signed. Scott is said to be in negotiations with the representatives of Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom he worked on "Body of Lies", to play the victim Maurizio Gucci. »

Angelina Jolie is in talks with Ridley Scott to play real-life femme fatale Patrizia Reggiano in his upcoming film Gucci, a drama about murder, decadence and the turbulent relations in and around the Gucci fashion dynasty.

The film will chronicle the story of the Gucci family, focusing mainly on the tragic story of Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of Guccio Gucci who founded the family fashion business. After a bloody power struggle for control and just as he was on the verge of even greater success, Maurizio was gunned down in front of his Milan apartment in 1995. Reggiano, his ex-wife, was later sentenced to 29 years in prison for orchestrating the murder.

Fox is eyeing a 2010 start for the film. The role of Maurizio is still up in the air, but Scott has approached Leonardo DiCaprio, whom he worked with on Body Of Lies, to take on the role.

Ridley Scott Remaking UK's Red Riding Trilogy for Columbia

15 October 2009 3:53 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Columbia Pictures announced earlier today via Variety that they've acquired remake rights to the UK TV mini-series known as Red Riding, a trilogy of feature films that have been playing the festival circuit this year. The studio is "negotiating" with Steve Zaillian (Gangs of New York, American Gangster) to write the script and Ridley Scott (Gladiator, American Gangster, Body of Lies) to direct. Zaillian has already been working with Columbia, as he was hired to rewrite the Steven Soderbergh Moneyball script. Both Scott and Zaillian will produce the remake along with Andrew Eaton of Revolutionary Films, who produced the mini. Alright, so I saw part one of the Red Riding trilogy at the Telluride Film Festival back in September. It's titled 1974 and stars the very talented Andrew Garfield, however, I hated it. I disliked it so much that I walked out of it after the first film and didn't even »

Columbia Wants Scott and Zaillian for Red Riding

15 October 2009 7:39 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

I’m somewhat convinced that Ridley Scott — either by his own nature or by the wishes of studios — will eventually attach his name in some capacity to every film on the horizon. A quick scan of IMDb reveals that the director of Blade Runner and Gladiator has twenty two films in the works, including his Alien prequel and his bizarre Monopoly film.

Now, Columbia Pictures wants Scott and writer Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List, American Gangster, Moneyball) to remake the U.K. miniseries Red Riding, based on a series of David Peace novels.

Scott will serve as a producer for the film, which will center around “power and police corruption framed around the investigation of the disappearance of several young girls.” The setting will be relocated to the United States for the abbreviated film version.

Scott and Zaillian are collaborators, having worked together on both Gangster and Hannibal. While both are extremely talented, »

Ridley Scott to direct 'Red Riding'

14 October 2009 10:52 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Ridley Scott may direct Columbia Pictures' remake of the U.K. miniseries "Red Riding," based on four David Peace novels. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Steven Zaillian is in talks to write the screenplay.

Variety says the series focuses on police corruption surrounding the investigation of the disappearance on a group of young girls. The compressed remake will be set in the U.S. rather than Britain.

The last U.K. miniseries to hit the big screen as a remake was "State of Play," a film I really enjoyed, even though I haven't seen the original series yet.

Scott is currently in post-production on "Robin Hood." He also directed "Body of Lies" and "American Gangster," which Zaillian wrote. Zaillian is working on "Moneyball." »

Mel Gibson Takes Us to the 'Edge of Darkness' in New Trailer

14 October 2009 7:16 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Counting out Signs and We Were Soldiers, it's been nearly a decade since Mel Gibson's knocked some skulls (if you're willing to factor in 2000's The Patriot; if not, then exactly a decade since 1999's Payback), and in the trailer for Edge of Darkness -- embedded post-jump -- it looks like old habits die hard.

Gibson plays a Boston detective whose daughter is killed in a hit meant for him. Naturally, he starts knocking on doors and following trails to determine if his daughter had actually been the target all along, and why. Writer William Monahan is no stranger to either Beantown (The Departed) or elaborate conspiracies (Body of Lies), and director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) already made a BBC miniseries out of the material back in 1985. (No wonder it was reminding me of State of Play, title similarities aside.)

I wasn't sure then why a film with such »

Michael Stuhlbarg is A Serious Man But not too serious.

The major talking point about the Coen Brothers' new film A Serious Man seems to be that it has "no stars," or is comprised of a cast of mostly unknowns. The leader of this unknown ensemble is Michael Stuhlbarg, who plays Larry Gopnik, a tenure-track professor and Jewish father living in 1967 Minnesota. Life doesn't seem too bad for Larry until a nearly unending list of terrible things befalls him, including a pending divorce, a car accident, a gambling brother, ungrateful children, a mysterious letter-writer, a bribery attempt, a lusty neighbor (on one side) and a threatening neighbor (on the other), plus a doctor's appointment and a bar mitzvah under the influence of pot. Larry seeks the help of three rabbis to help sort his life, and finds that their cryptic advice doesn't provide any easy answers. Really, the only thing you can do is laugh. It's »

Every now and then, a movie comes out that transforms a male actor into someone to be desired, adored and often watched for decades to come. We're experiencing such a phenomenon now with Robert Pattinson, who has essentially starred in one wide-release movie and had "Twilight" transform him from "Who's that?" to "Hottest Man Alive" overnight.

But where does RPattz go from here? Will he launch a decades-long career? Work with directors like Spielberg and Scorsese? Or will he become another Hollywood cautionary tale? Below are a handful of beefcake breakouts transformed by one major role, whose careers could perhaps give guidance to the Sparkly One.
