''Have we got a video?''
Rabical-913 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
'Nasty' is a unique episode of 'The Young Ones' in that it is the first episode in the run to lack the standard opening titles. It instead features a creepy twist on Peter Brewis' standard theme tune playing over a scary set of animated opening titles which features the characters as horror-movie versions of themselves.

The episode kicks of with the guys walking down a dark graveyard, a coffin perched upon their shoulders which apparently contains the body of a vampire!. As they prepare to bury the coffin, they end up chatting to a pair of grave diggers ( played by future double-act Gareth Hale and Norman Pace ), of how this turn of events sabotaged their plan of having fun watching video nasties.

Mike has acquired a video recorder from his friend, Harry The Bastard, a vicious gangster to whom Mike owes £500 but nobody has the faintest idea how to work the thing. Eventually, their fun is hampered by the arrival of a strange looking parcel. It is no less than the vampire...

A brilliant episode which doesn't receive nearly as much recognition as it deserves, especially given that the musical performance for this episode is from The Damned ( one of my dad's favourite bands ) belting out ( appropriately enough ) 'Video Nasty'. Alexei Sayle is at his best here as the vampire who terrorises the lads, particularly when he tries to convince that lads that he is a driving instructor and not a vampire. One scene involving two teddy bears having sex was for some reason cut from repeat screenings but was retained in the DVD releases of the show.

Making up the supporting cast are Dawn French and Helen Atkinson Wood as two stars in a commercial for painkillers, Chris Barrie as a ship's captain ( in a scene, as which befits the show, has nothing to do with the plot ) and Terry Jones as a ham actor/postman.

Funniest bit - Rick rounding on Neil for listening in on him whilst he was in the bath. ''We all know what you get up to in there!'' says Rick, ''So I wouldn't go spilling the beans if I was you!''. Suddenly Neil panics at this last remark. ''What do you know about the beans?'', he defensively asks!

Second funniest bit - the grim reaper playing chess with a middle aged man. Winning, the man announces ''Checkmate!''. ''Bollocks to this!'' yells the enraged reaper as he upends the board before killing the man with his scythe!
