Gabrielle seeks to bury Xena's body near that of her brother in Amphipolis, but trouble amongst the Amazons gets her off track. Xena, fighting for life from beyond, tries to revive her old body and she enlists the help of an old friend.
SYNOPSIS
Gabrielle is taking Xena's body back to Amphilpolis for burial when she's suddenly attacked by some thugs. She fights them off and is all of a sudden joined by old friend Iolaus, Hercules' sidekick. After they beat up the bad dudes, he wishes her well and tells her that he's off to inform Hercules of Xena's passing. A bit further down the road Gabrielle is suddenly stopped by numerous women in masks. They're the Amazons, and among them is old friend Ephiny. They pay their respects to Xena's body, and introduce Gabrielle to the interim chief Velasca. The leadership title is now actually meant for Gabrielle due to her having been previously adopted by a now deceased Amazon leader. Gabrielle says that she can't think of that stuff now since she has to bury Xena, but Ephiny insists she take the Amazon throne. Velasca is an aggressive warrior who wants to take actions that will result in resumed conflict with the centaurs. In order to save the fragile peace and prevent needless bloodshed, Gabrielle agrees to join the Amazons again where they will cremate Xena's body in a ceremony.
King of Thieves Autolycus is at it again. Something in him dictated that he steal a sacred blade from a temple. While doing this he realizes that Xena has taken over his body, and she is the one who helps him successfully get away with the artifact. She tells him that she needs his skills in order to steal her body and get her some ambrosia, the food of the gods, so that she can come back to life. He agrees to help so long as she only takes control of his body when he agrees to it. Back at the Amazon camp Gabrielle gets a personal visit from Velasca. Velasca believes that Gabrielle is not up for running the tribe, and tells her that at a ceremony this evening she can just hand the sacred mask to Velasca and then Velasca will gratefully accept the leadership position. Is this the right thing for Gabrielle to do? Autolycus is unable to steal Xena's body from the Amazon camp, and he's locked up by the orders of a very surprised Gabrielle. Gabrielle then denies Velasca the leadership role and takes it for herself. A power struggle ensues, and Gabrielle is thrown in prison with Autolycus.
A daring escape from jail gets Gabrielle and Autolycus out of prison. They are joined by several Amazons who are against Velasca's rule. This includes Ephiny who knows that the Amazon tribe will not be welcoming of her and her half centaur son if Velasca takes over. Unfortunately, Velasca detained the sacred blade that Autolycus had on his person when he was arrested, and she has a hunch that it has something to do with Xena. Once Gabrielle, Autolycus, and the others get to the temple where the ambrosia is located they are quickly in the midst of Velasca who followed them. A struggle ensues as Gabrielle and Velasca try and climb some ropes to the spot where the ambrosia is located (Autolycus can't do much since his arm was broken in the escape from prison). Velasca wants the ambrosia since she knows that eating it will make her a god! She almost gets it, but Xena's powers take over Gabrielle's body, and the ambrosia falls into a fire. Velasca falls onto a spike.
Fortunately, a bit of the ambrosia lodged itself onto Gabrielle's garment as it fell. She feeds it to Xena, and Xena is back to life! She'll be more careful so as to not leave Gabrielle in the future. They thank Autolycus for his genuine friendship. However, it looks like a bit of the ambrosia fell into reach of the dying Velasca. Did she eat it and save herself?
NOTES
Gabrielle will go to incredible lengths for Xena, but also to do the right thing and protect people. Autolycus and Ephiny are just a few of the great friends that Gabrielle and Xena have, and they're there for them during their time of need.
