Lucy continues to be conflicted about her future. She and Doug are at odds again. The main story involves the death of a fish poacher who is found dead at the scene of his crimes. We are led through Wycliffe's rehabilitation from his near-death experience. His is suffering from a repression of memory that is haunting him. One interesting thing here is the absence of his wife. Did I miss something?

Everybody seems to be in bad mood in the opener for the fifth and final series.
Directed by Jack Shepherd, there are some arty shots as Wycliffe recovers from his injuries. He might be in rehab but his mood is foul as the higher ups urge him into retirement.
DI Lane has stepped into Wycliffe's shoes temporarily. The pressure is getting to her. She also has an offer of promotion and it would involve leaving the team.
DI Kersey might be happy with that. Lane is second guessing his decisions.
There is a farmer who easily flys off the handle. He has scared some kids who have been fishing.
Later when a salmon poacher is found dead, the farmer becomes the main suspect.
The murder plot seemed to be an afterthought with all the side stories. I could hardly wait for Wycliffe to recover and get back in charge.
