Joker Wells is an ex-confederate soldier who turned and ran during a battle. Those he ran out on never forgot, and some of them live in Porter, Texas where Joker grew up. When Joker rides in to reclaim his family's ranch, he has a mess of trouble.
The wife of one of the soldiers Joker fought with is very bitter. Her husband returned from the war with only one arm, and he lost that arm during that battle. She could care less who kills Joker, as long as it doesn't leave her widowed. She couldn't stand this...
The ending to this episode is so profound. The man, of course, lives but living may be a bigger punishment than dying. By the end, he seems to want somebody to kill him, and he's going to go somewhere where he'll make sure it DOES happen. He tried to kill himself, but failed miserably. He can't do that a second time...
This shows how our past mistakes follow us wherever we go, and his being killed in battle may have been the better option...
