Tiny Toons goes weird
TheLittleSongbird4 February 2020
There are a fair share of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes that centre around an individual story, and there are great examples such as "A Looney Beginning" and "Her Wacky Highness". There are just as many, and perhaps even more, episodes that are made up of two or more segments (mostly three), again some great examples and many come off entertainingly but the quality is not as consistent with not every segment being completely successful.

Both parts of "You Asked For It" are triple bill episodes. Both parts are well worth watching and definitely recommended (don't really consider any of the show's episodes less than watchable), but neither are classics or see 'Tiny Toon Adventures' at its best. For me, the first part was better even though not everything worked. Part 2 was less consistent, and only one of the three segments was completely nailed. Whether one enjoys it is, as is the case with some of the episodes with a segment structure, very dependent on whether they like the character that is primarily focused on.

In this case it's Hamton. In my case, he is amusing and is not a too bland personality. In my mind though, 'Tiny Toon Adventures' has much funnier, more interesting and more investable characters that fit more with the premise's wackiness. Primarily Buster, Babs and Plucky. The weakest of the three segments is "The Weird Couple", that for my tastes went overboard on the weirdness and even for a deliberately odd pairing, the partnering of Hamton and Dizzy (who also felt a bit bland) had too much of a disconnect.

Didn't find the story linking the segments the most inspired or most interesting of the show. Again not bad with the characters on great form and it amuses, it's just been done better.

"Little Cake Of Horrors" though is much more interesting and the strangeness isn't overdone. At times it was quite creepy while in keeping with the show's wacky tone. The best faring segment by far though is "The Return of the Toxic Revenger" (the only great one), it's a clever concept executed with razor sharp wit, immense energy and thrills. And the writers were clearly having a ball with the character writing for Plucky (who fits the role he plays here perfectly, the best of the regular characters for it really).

All three segments are colourfully animated and the expressions and reactions continue to delight. There is nothing questionable about the music placement or type and the theme song is still infectious. The voice acting is great.

Summing up, fun enough if uneven. 7/10
