The Plucky Duck Story
TheLittleSongbird17 February 2020
Have always found 'Tiny Toon Adventures' to be a very funny, well made and clever show, with very memorable characters. Anybody who loves Looney Tunes, 'Animaniacs' and 'Pinky and the Brain' (am a fan of all, particularly lifelong in the case in the vast majority of the Looney Tunes cartoons) should find a lot to at least like 'Tiny Toon Adventures'. Told myself that before watching it long ago that if it was anything like them that it would be a treat. It turned out to be just that, if not quite childhood favourites in the same way they were due to being introduced to it later.

"Hollywood Plucky" is a brilliant episode, one of the best 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes and the best perhaps since "Babs in Wackyland". It epitomises everything that is so brilliant about the show and pure gold is a perfect way to describe it. The premise may not be a new one, pastiching Hollywood and having lots of Hollywood references and references are familiar territory. But you know what, it doesn't matter because that's what the show often does and what Looney Tunes, 'Animaniacs' and 'Pinky and the Brain' do (am mentioning them because the show from personal experience has always been compared to them, favourably just to say on a side note).

The animation is vibrant and crisp throughout, with lots of meticulous attention to detail in the backgrounds and all the characters are beautifully drawn. No scrappiness here and the animators had fun clearly with the expressions for particularly Plucky. The music is as good as the old Looney Tunes cartoons (prime-Looney Tunes, not most of the 60s ones) in being characterful and adding to the action, if not quite enhancing it in the same way. It always helps to have a memorable theme tune, and the one for 'Tiny Toon Adventures' is suitably hip and very catchy.

As is the case for a vast majority of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' run, "Hollywood Plucky's" writing is full of typical Tiny Toons wackiness and razor sharp wit, not to mention extremely clever. Reminding one hugely of the best of Looney Tunes, which as one can gather a big compliment. The story is not new ground, but is rich in affectionate nostalgia and energy and children and adults alike will take delight in the cleverly interwoven, not thrown in, references.

Plucky has always been one of the show's best characters and he is on top form here. The caricatures are similarly a delight, caricatures that include the likes of Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep and Indiana Jones. Not to mention Bruce Timm's inspired version of Batman. The voice acting is spot on.

Concluding, brilliant episode and epitomises why the show is as great as it is. 10/10
