This is another good Season 1 episode that establishes Starsky and Hutch as a notch above your ordinary cops. They follow the evidence, but they don't jump to conclusions, and their instincts for getting the real culprits almost never fail them.
Here they are confronted with a couple of deaf ex-convicts who seem to be involved in some jewelry thefts. Even though signs point to their guilt, and one of them runs away, Starsky and Hutch are suspicious of the circumstances and believe there is some other explanation. They go above and beyond to do more investigating and brain-storming until they smoke out the real villains and save the two innocents from being framed.
I like the way this episode is put together, and how Starsky and Hutch avoid the natural assumptions and see through the set-up. I like the scene where they call for the guy they are chasing, who is deaf but they are unaware of the fact, to put up his hands, and when he doesn't respond and they can't see his hands, they don't shoot him in the back anyway. Nice display of wisdom and self-control. Starsky and Hutch are careful and smart; they are the kind of cops you want on your side if you get in trouble.
There are a few small anomalies, the most noticeable of which is the way the theater clears out so fast between chasing the priest outside and then back inside for the shoot-out. The other interesting effect of the forty-year age of this show is that Starsky and Hutch know immediately that the priest is an impostor when Dobey relates he is supposed to be a 71-year-old man. I, however, was confused by how that information clued them in. To me, the guy playing the priest could have been 71. I guess 71 didn't look like that back in the 70s. Seventy really is the new fifty in our day.
