Ronnie Barker plays Albert Spanner in this tale of an ailing football team Ashfield Athletic. Spanner is its trainer, local cabbie/hotdog seller/chauffeur. It was written by Roy Clarke.
Spanner was hoping the success of the football team would lead to more hotdog sales as well as ferrying supporters to away matches.
Now even local councillors find the team's woes too much and are looking to replace him.
Spanner's Eleven is a typical example of a lad's comedy from the 1970s. The romeo footballer more interested in birds than the football, bent local politicians, the camp one played by Christopher Biggins and Spanner is more interested in Match of the Day than frolicking with his wife when she is all dressed up.
It never made it past the pilot stage and its clear why as it hardly raised a laugh.
