You Win Some, You Lose Some (#3.25)

Warning: Spoilers
Bailey wants a relationship with Sarah but she just wants to be friends. Charlie breaks up with Grace because she is not a children person. Julia gets married to Griffin to go with Justin to Europe.

I am with Grace. I was not a fan of the character but I like people who don't want children. She will be better off without Charlie and his huge house of kids.

Wow, Julia getting married is not what I expected. Let's see if she will regret it. But the moment when her siblings give her the wedding ring of their mother was beautiful.

Bailey's coach is a great guy. He sure supports him. I guess it really is too soon for him to get back with Sarah.

Good Choices, Bad Choices

Warning: Spoilers
Decisive moments arrive for the three older siblings. Charlie finally, Finally!!!, decides to put Claudia and Owen first and dumps Grace, Griffin and Julia get married because Justin and her want to go to Europe for two months, Sarah dumps Drew but cannot get back together with Bailey, Bailey make ammends with his coach. About all this, I think there are many mistakes in the lines, as the future and past clearly shows: Julia saying she wants to be with Griffin forever, she is just 17 and he is 18, they didn't live together not even a week, there's no logic reason to get marry. I totally understand Charlie, she did a big mistake (Bad Choice), after all he has been through with Kirsten, he feels like Julia lost her mind, he feels it like an insult, not to mention the fact that he couldn't even drive his sister to the aisle. Charlie should have been the first to get married, anyway, he'll be the first to marry seriously. About if he could accept living with Grace without children, no, definetely he couldn't, Charlie had all the reasons to dump her: Claudia and Owen, Julia's disapproval, not knowing Bailey, she doesn't want kids, they had no chemistry at all, besides the fact that they didn't spent nothing, nothing of what Charlie and Kirsten did. Also, she was surprised that Charlie prioritized Claudia and Owen, instead of her or himself (really?goodbye woman). Anyway, there were some interesting details: Claudia told Grace (she asked) that Kirsten couldn't have kids, that she wouldn't let Charlie go to bed mad (I'm not sure if that rule was always respected in seasons 1-2) and that they fought like any normal couple (fair enough). Also, Grace didn't know any of this, not even the reason of the break up in 3x12, which means that Charlie kept those personal facts just for himself, in his wounded heart. And she recognized that if Charlie suffered for Kirsten in 3x11-12-13, it's because he loves her too much, enough to spend a lifetime with her without children of their own, enough to wait for her until she gets better. Leaving that aside, about Sarah's lines, no, in season 4 will be proved that she and Bailey can't move on from each other. Still, she did the right thing, it's too soon, the damage that Bailey caused is too big to ignore for now (Good Choice). The best of the episode was Bailey-Sarah's story, had great and emotional scenes between the two and showed Mrs Reeves anger against Bailey. He was eager to drink when he thought Sarah got into Brown college (her parents plan to keep her away from Bailey), but he regained hope, joy when he learned she got in Berkeley. He was reluctant to be just her friend, but she said that is the right thing. Then, the simple wedding of Griffin and Julia was a nice moment, but still is a big mistake, proves how immature are the two characters (even Sarah reacted bad to Julia's news, it means the idea of marriage being so young scares her, unlike Bailey). For the last scene, I highlight that the siblings gave Julia "Diana's cursed ring", considering that marriage won't end well, for obvious reasons.

Season 3 ended, and had some of the greatest moments (and episodes), but also had some of the worst moments of the series. For one side, Kirsten's depression, the six first episodes of the season were perfect, outstanding, touching, amazing. Showed the beginning of Bailey's drinking problems, a Man taking care of his "Wife" in the hardest moments and Julia, Claudia, Owen as the support. Then, there were some touching moments in 3x11 and 3x13, with Charlie's depression and Grandpa Jake's last appearance. Also, the special Desperate Measures, that was an excellent episode but with a tragic turn out: the lost of a key family member. But then, the season divided in two different ways, one great and another one pretty bad. Bailey's story was developed brilliantly, with an amazing performance of Scott Wolf as the protagonist. JLH did also a great job as Sarah, her character was a star in this season. Claudia, who was once again a wonderful character but felt lonely and didn't have much screen time (unlike the last two seasons). Owen had enough appearances unlike season 2 although could have been much more. Julia had a acceptable story overall, but she neglected Bailey, Claudia and Owen sometimes, only to spend time with guys (Cooper, Sam, Griffin). And Charlie lost himself since Gimme Shelter (3x12 doesn't count), mostly neglecting all his siblings because this new woman, Grace. So the wrong side of this season is that, was too long and they wasted too much time with Grace, Sam, leaving aside Claudia for example. If everybody knew there was no future for Sam or Grace in the series, why they stayed so much? Charlie and Julia lost themselves instead of behaving like they should, specially Charlie. In season 1, he was perfectly developed but in this season, since he lost Kirsten, was too bad, he behaved like a teenager, "crushed" for a woman who doesn't have a thing in common with him. This season proved that Kirsten, one of the show's main characters, was mistakenly left out, she gave the whole family and the series the necessary stability, without her, the series is like a three legged table, a house without girders, beams. The best of the season were the beginning 6 episodes and Bailey's alcohol plot, the rest seems overall forgettable.

The end of a chapter.

Warning: Spoilers
You Win Some, You Lose Some, is the best season final in my book. It's not a two parter, but the whole episode give season 3, and everything else, a great send off. Griffin and Julia get married, before she spends her Summer in Europe (with Justin?). Charlie breaks up with Grace, because of her mental block with kids. And I'm always conflicted with that. She really improved since her introduction on the show, and looked very found of Charlie. So have writers pull the rug under her, just as she was getting comfortable, was cruel. But when you know how the rest of the series plays out, you can't be surprised about it either. As for Bailey, he also gets the writers cold shoulder, with Sarah wanting to stay friends. But then again, if you've already seen the rest of the seasons, you know it was just a way to keep viewers on their toes. The irony is, just as they get back together, it's Julia and Griffin that part ways, in next year's finale. The closing scene will probably leave a lot of us on the verge of tears, but it's always worth it in a show like Party of Five.
