Murphy Brown finds herself volunteering for a Thanksgiving dinner at a homeless shelter after dropping off some spare clothing to make room for her maternity wardrobe. She manages to recruit her colleagues at FYI to help out as she is short handed and soon things head south under her leadership.

When Murphy discovers that her designer slacks no longer fit, she decides to donate them to a soup kitchen and clothing bank, and is convinced to volunteer to help serve Thanksgiving dinner. She convinces the other FYI staff to join her and this leads to some funny situations concerning people way out of their element. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong with Murphy failing to pick up prunes for Jim's favorite stuffing and Miles showing up with live turkeys. Their squabbling is as noisy as the turkey squawking, and the people expecting meals give up. Murphy feels bad for failing to do what she promised, but gets a little taste of what the holiday is all about when a single man shows up and asks Murphy to eat with him. His quiet dignity gets Murphy to open up her heart and listen, and when she gets him to smile, it really does end up being a happy Thanksgiving, at least from Murphy's perspective.
