THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Yukon Affair - 1965
This is the 43rd episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum, plays Illya Kuryakin, Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.
In this episode, George Sanders returns as villain G. Emory Partridge. (The Gazebo in the Maze Affair) Sanders has a found a supply of a new mineral alloy that could play havoc with the Western Powers electronic devices. (missile guidance etc.) The mineral is only found in a middle of nowhere spot in the Yukon Territory. Of course Sanders intends to sell the mineral to THRUSH.
UNCLE agents Robert Vaughn and David McCallum are sent by submarine to be dropped off by the mine. (Neat trick since the mine is in the mountains) Needless to say they are captured by the bad guys, and need to pull a James Bond like escape.
This is really one of the worst episodes of the entire series. It plays out like a badly written Dudley Do Right cartoon episode. Eskimos tossing harpoons, RCMP types that seem like Sgt Preston of The Yukon clones, a town that looks right out of 1898. MGM must have saved a bundle by using every film clip they had of snow to pad out the runtime. George Sanders spends the entire episode looking embarrassed.
I am a fan of the series, but the writer here should have sent out to sea on an ice flow.
