THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The See Paris and Die Affair – 1965

This is the 22nd episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

In this episode both UNCLE and THRUSH, are after a pair of cousins, Lloyd Bochner and Gerald Mohr. The pair robbed a huge diamond syndicate of an enormous amount of diamonds. They threaten to flood the marketplace with the diamonds if they are not paid one million a year in cash The syndicate pays off, not wanting the cousins to do as they threaten.

UNCLE wants to return the stones to the rightful owners, while THRUSH wants them to finance their evil plans. Working for the cousins is an undercover THRUSH agent, Alfred Ryder. Ryder's job is to find where Bochner and Mohr have hidden the stolen gems.

UNCLE agents Robert Vaughn and David McCallum talk an old flame of Bochner's into helping get the same info from Bochner. The woman, Katherine Hays, agrees and is soon in Paris as a club singer.

Bochner falls for the woman all over again and the trap is set. The trap is sprung early as THRUSH spoils matters by stealing the furniture where the diamonds are hidden. There is now a wild ride through the French countryside to retrieve the stones.

This is an entertaining episode with the MGM back lot being used as the backdrop for the real Paris. (Miss Hays would become the wife of actor Glenn Ford several years down the road)

Warning: Spoilers
This episode begins where UNCLE seems to be playing the heavy when Solo convinces Singer Kathryn Hays to befriend her ex-boyfriend, who is part of THRUSH and has secured plenty of diamonds hidden in furniture.

Lloyd Bochner is the man and his fellow THRUSH agent, a cousin is attempting a double-cross.

Bochner is ready to let Hays be killed when he finds out that she has become a pawn for UNCLE.

Her singing coach seems to provide comic relief with her screaming when action sequences are presented in this episode.

I enjoyed the way that other THRUSH agent went flying through the window and plunged several floors.

Lovely Kathryn Hays plays a singer Napoleon enlists to perform at the nightclub of an old boyfriend who has stolen diamonds.

Hays is curiously similar to Diana Rigg's Mrs. Peel, in the way she's done up and in her acting style.

For a coinneseur of 1960s TV actors, this is something of an "all-star" UNCLE. Lloyd Bochner (as the love-struck ex-boyfriend. Gerald Mohr. Alfred Ryder. Kevin Hagen. But you don't have to recognize those named to enjoy this episode.

Two things that bothered me: it seems unlikely a Fench chanteuse would sing an American song in a Paris nightclub, even one run by Americans. And the way Napoleon summons the helicopter is troubling. But Solo is often shown as a man of few scruples.
