THE MAN FROM UNCLE – The Pieces of Fate Affair - 1967

This is the 82nd episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) UNCLE's main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

This one has UNCLE agents David McCallum and Robert Vaughn sent to look into a bestselling author. The woman, Sharon Farrell, has published a spy novel that reads like a file of past UNCLE cases.

Out to put the kibosh on Farrell is THRUSH bosses, Theodore Marcuse and Grayson Hall. Once they realize that UNCLE is involved, they decide to capture Farrell and give her a bit of THRUSH style de-briefing.

The rest of the episode includes the by now mandatory, capture of our heroes and likewise their escape. (several times in fact in this one) Even UNCLE boss Leo G Carroll gets into the act with this one.

Anyways, the plot leads us to a small burg in Ohio where relatives of Farrell live. Needless to say THRUSH is in hot pursuit. The gag in this one is that Farrell's "uncle", Charles Seel, is really a former THRUSH agent. The man had decided to give up his THRUSH life and went into hiding. Seel had written several diary's of his THRUSH adventures which Farrell had found. She used these as the basis of her spy novel.

This one was more enjoyable than I was expecting. Particularly good was Grayson Hall as a venomous literary critic and THRUSH agent. Theo Marcuse (making his third guest spot) would die soon after production in a car wreck.

The direction was handled by big screen veteran, John Brahm. Film noir fans will know Brahm from THE LOCKET, LET US LIVE, GUEST IN THE HOUSE, SINGAPORE, THE LODGER, HANGOVER SQUARE and THE BRASHER DOUBLOON.

The deadly diaries

Warning: Spoilers
Bestselling author Jacqueline Midcult ( Sharon Farrell ) goes on a talk-show to discuss her new spy novel, entitled 'The Pieces Of Fate'. Solo and Kuryakin are in the audience. The host invites questions, and a man tries to shoot Midcult.

Mr.Waverly has noticed that many characters and incidents in the novel appear to be based on real-life events. Discounting the possibility of an U.N.C.L.E. security leak, he wonders whether Midcult has found the lost diaries of THRUSH historian Charles Coltrane. Said diaries were rumoured to contain details of forthcoming THRUSH operations.

They cannot ask Midcult as she is suffering from mild amnesia. At a literary party thrown by Jody Moore ( Grayson Hall ), the author is kidnapped and subjected to brainwashing...

Written by Harlan Ellison, this was not repeated for years due to a legal problem. Ellison had based one character on a friend, the noted science fiction author and critic Judith Merril. Her daughter saw the episode, was angered, and a lawsuit resulted. When it resurfaced in 1985, the name 'Judith Merle' was replaced by 'Jody Moore' ( though when the performers speak in my copy the original name can be heard ).

One of the better Season 3 episodes, containing many sly jokes at the expense of television and the literary world, but stops short of being a classic. Possibly the flat ending might have had something to do with it.

This was Sharon Farrell's third appearance in 'M.F.U'. She had earlier been in Season 1's 'The Double Affair' and 'The Minus X Affair' the following year. Theo Marcuse, who sadly died in a road accident a few months after this went out, was in Season 2's 'The Recollectors Affair'.

Like I said, some lovely touches of wicked humour to be found here. When THRUSH's brainwashing temporarily causes Midcult to regress to childhood ( she begins acting like a seven year old ), Illya comments: "With a mentality like that, she really could write a bestseller!". Ouch!
