THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Foreign Legion Affair - 1966
This is the 51st episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum, plays Illya Kuryakin, Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.
UNCLE agent David McCallum is in North Africa breaking into a THRUSH headquarters. He is looking for a secret code which he manages to find and photograph. He barely escapes the angry local THRUSH boss, Michael Pate and his men. UNCLE sends a small charter plane to fly him to Cairo to catch a flight to New York.
The THRUSH types hi-jack the plane over the Sahara desert, which results in exchange of fists etc. Agent McCallum and the stewardess, Danielle De Metz, end up going out the exit with a single parachute. They land safely out in the middle of nowhere.
They start for the coast but are soon delirious from a lack of food and water. They stumble onto an old Foreign Legion fort and a two man garrison. The men, Howard Da Silva and Rupert Crousse are the only survivors of a group of Legion troops stationed there 10 years before. They have had no contact with the outside word since. They survive of food given to them by a local Arab tribe.
Da Silva decides that the two must be spies and tosses them in a cell. While all this is going on, UNCLE sends out Robert Vaughn to see if he can pick up the trail. Vaughn has a run in with Pate and is soon captured. Pate decides that if UNCLE has sent another agent, it means McCallum must still be alive. Off he goes by aircraft to look over the desert where McCallum had jumped.
Vaughn manages an escape with the help of serving wench, Vivienne Ventura. He then enlists the help of the local army post for a half track. Off he heads to search for his bud, McCallum. He arrives at the fort just after Pate and a few angry THRUSH types do. Of course there is a bit of rough and tumble needed to dispose of Pate and his mob.
There are a few good moments here, but as a whole, the episode is not one of the better efforts.
