Class struggle

Mr Kashimoto hires Lovejoy to find him a gift with appropriate dignity to present to the blue noses at the local private golf and country club.

He's being shepherded around by Arnold Featherstone, the only non-racist, non-s3xist, non-class snob in the club. Featherstone has also asked Lovejoy to come appraise the club's annual trophy. They want to hawk it to buy some land adjacent.

Meanwhile the B plot has Lovejoy wheeling and dealing on a blunderbuss. Whilst cleaning the firearm, Eric shoots a hole in the roof, creates some leakage issue, which leads to calling a plumber and....well, let's just say we're off to the races.

Kashimoto is played by Togo Igawa who, in 1986, became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company as its first Japanese actor. I suppose TV paid the bills, so to speak, and his appearance here is memorable to say the least.

Michael Culver also makes an impression as Featherstone. He bears a striking resemblance to Clint Eastwood at a similar age. And his graceful presence really grounds the entire episode, tying the snooty club members with the earthy antiques crowd. He pulls it off perfectly.
