Barry Becomes a Psychopathic Killer But Only Part Time

I think Roy Clarke is getting desperate for episode titles by now.

Barry is playing a sneering villain for his amateur dramatic group.

Of course to get a costume he visits Auntie Wainwright who dresses him up as a goon from The Godfather.

Meanwhile Smiler had had a woman who has fallen for him big time. Her name is Bessie and she is a hefty lass.

Bessie thinks that Smiler has money. Truly has a plan to get her to change her mind.

Truly sends Clegg down as the financial advisor to give Smiler the bad news. His investments are all kaput. Only for Bessie thos switch her amorous designs on Clegg.

Still Barry gets to put on his killer act when he has to rescue Clegg.

Mike Grady gets to ham it up as a tough guy. I did wonder if Bessie who Tom had fixed up for Smiler was too similar to the sturdy Mrs Avery. She was Tom's former girlfriend.

A decent episode, with an amazing one liner.

Barry has an acting part, that of a psycho, Glenda is disturbed, Smiler had a date with Bessie, but he's struggling to get away from her.

The core of the episode is a little bit on the average side, there's nothing unique, or wonderfully funny here. No pun, but it's the bits on the side that provide the real laughs.

Howard's desperation to get away with Marina are forever funny, and Pearl's ploy of the week is always fun, this being one of the best of them.

Brian Murphy's arrival has been perfect, he has managed to provide the laughs, his scenes with Nora Batty are great, and take me back to the days of Compo, he's so good.

I have to say though, this features the best one liner the show had in many years, 'A woman's love is a gift, I just wish yours was better wrapped,' that's an absolute classic.

Barry's gangster suit fell a little flat on me.

Not a classic, but there are some fine moments, 6/10.
