It used to be the case when I was a lad. Last of the Summer Wine would finish. To be replaced by I Didn't Know You Cared.

Both shows used to be broadcast by the BBC on Wednesday evenings. Both were based in Yorkshire, both even featured actor John Comer.

Somehow I Didn't Know You Cared has been forgotten about, while Last of the Summer Wine endured until 2010 and is still fondly recalled.

Written by Peter Tinniswood. The first episode sees Uncle Mort (Robin Bailey) burying his wife after an unfortunate incident.

It seems Mort is looking forward to single life again. He could wear his cap at dinner for a start. While talking to his brother in law Les (John Comer) and nephew Carter (Stephen Rea.)

It is clear that Uncle Mort tried to avoid marriage as long as possible. Something that Carter is trying to do as well.

His late wife came useful when it came to housework and DIY, something he will miss.

The divide between wives and husbands is also another thing it shared with Last of the Summer Wine.

A gently amusing opener that sets up the characters. Uncle Mort finds himself having to live with his sister.

Then there is doddery Uncle Staveley whose catchphrase 'I heard that. Pardon' became something we mimicked at school.

The casting of future Best Actor Oscar nominee Stephen Rea is interesting. The producers certainly thought he was talented because his Yorkshire accent is iffy.
