Evil Rogue Watchers

Warning: Spoilers
1. This is a pivotal episode in the Highlander TV series with plenty of tension between watchers and immortals and way too much violence. 2. I love the ladies of Highlander, both mortals and immortals. In this episode we are introduced to the beautiful immortal Gypsy Irina Galati. She and her husband Jacob were friends of Duncan. Irina is raped by a man who hates gypsy's, and the local authorities refuse to take any action. Later Irina is captured by the despicable watcher James Horton. Horton then captures Jacob and forces him to watch as Horton beheads Irina. The first time I ever saw this episode, the scene of Irina's death made me feel sick to my stomach, and it made me hate these watchers so much. I would have given this episode a higher rating, but I give it a 7 out of 10 just because of the gut wrenching murder of this gorgeous immortal woman.

I agreed with Jacob, the Watchers are evil. Zen Duncan holier-than-thou. Everybody flip-flops and become hypocrites. The Watcher stuff is tired. No satisfaction.

Warning: Spoilers
The Watchers think that Duncan tried to kill them all to protect Joe. They are after both Joe and Duncan. Methos is hiding Joe at Shakespeare & Company, and tending to his injuries. Meanwhile, Duncan has figured out who the actual immortal is that has been killing Watchers, his old friend, Jacob.

Guess in between being in America, Duncan had some time to be a gypsy in 1847 in Europe. He's there with Jacob. After seeing Jacob's past and what Horton did to Jacob and his wife, I have to say I don't blame Jacob one darn bit. Hey, it's fiction!

They wrote Duncan zen in the flashback, which I think was a mistake. His zen-ness didn't really start until modern times, like season 4. But anyway I thought he was kind of stupid to think that "the law" would handle things right in the flashback. Why did the writers write that? He's never been a stupid man. He knows how gypsies are viewed. He really should have let Jacob kill that scum bag rapist in the barn. No one would know, and they could have left easy peasy. Now that I think about it, Duncan actually made the situation worse. Reminds me of season one's "Nowhere to Run", episode. There again Duncan is trying to protect a rapist and he makes everything worse.

Duncan, Methos, and Joe are like 3 blind mice. They think the Watcher organization is a good thing. Despite them killing immortals all the time. Why does Duncan and Methos use the weak excuse that recording their history is important? Duncan lived 400 years without knowing about them and never cared about his history being recorded before. Same with Methos, tho he lived thousands of years. It's stupid that these two guys would be ok with people stalking them all the time, knowing they may, or may not be corrupt and try and kill them, or target their loved ones. Well Duncan, since Methos pretends to be a watcher. Yeah, Methos is the smart one. Anyway, I roll my eyes at their reverence for the organization.

I wonder if Mac ever realized that Joe told Jacob the lie that the Watchers had Duncan and were gonna kill him? That's why Jacob headed off with him in the first place. I'm not sure that was made explicitly clear to him. I think he would have been gutted to know Jacob let his guard down in an effort to save him. From what I saw, all that he understood was that Joe got Jacob to trust him, and used his friendship with Mac.

Everybody is flip-flopping. Joe turns Jacob in, but then complains he didn't agree to him being killed. Crazy Jack, flip flops all over the place. Duncan wanted Jacob and Joe to meet thinking they could sing kumbaya and work things out. Jacob wanted revenge. That was wrong to Mac. But then Jack killed Jacob, and Mac wanted revenge against Jack. That was right to Mac. But then Joe points a gun at Mac, but then Jack tells Joe to shoot Duncan, but then Joe points the gun at Jack saying he'll shoot him. Eventually, Joe talks Mac out of killing Jack. Methos was willing to throw Jacob under the bus, but now guiltily says that he set up one of their own and he doesn't know who he is anymore.

I found the episode frustrating because there is no satisfaction in any direction you look. I totally saw Jacob's point of view and agreed with him. The Watchers should have been taken out a long time ago. I know they have good ones, but at least take down the organization and destroy all the records. The evil ones use the records to track down immortals and kill them. Jack killed Jacob pretty much the same way Horton killed Irina. That was actually kind of offensive.

Anyway, this episode just made me feel tired of The Watchers. I liked the stories early on, but them keep doing things against immortals and getting away with it, whilst Mac sits there and stupidly says yeah but they record history, just made me sick of them and Mac's attitude.

When I watch a show, I want leave-off feeling satisfied. I didn't have that here. I gave it a 6/10.
