The Beastmaster kidnaps Tessa. Duncan goes primitive. Best fight scene so far. Best Duncan-comes-back-to-life scene in the series. Rapey & uncomfortable to watch at times.

Warning: Spoilers
Three sexist misogynist mountain men pigs kidnap Tessa. They're led by Caleb played by Marc Singer from Beastmaster fame, who is an immortal. He wants Tessa to be his "woman." Duncan is hot on their trail.

This episode has a rapey feeling and is uncomfortable to watch at times when the trio are treating Tessa like property. Just to be clear she wasn't raped though definitely sexual assaulted. Smart Tessa leaves clues for Duncan to find. In this episode Duncan has a flashback to when Carl, a very old immortal shaman teaches Duncan how to track.

I didn't care for the "even the Indians have never been here," stuff. Found that kind of offensive, it's sort of dismissive of the Native Americans' skills and abilities in my opinion. But hey ok, the white guys are better? No thanks.

Ironically probably the best part of the episode is Duncan as he reverts to his Native American teachings as well as Carl's teachings. This episode also has my favorite Duncan-coming-back-to-life scene of the entire series. He jumped off a mountain and is "dead" all mangled up. When he comes to, they show, and you hear the crackling of bones as he flexes himself back in shape. Great job by Adrian Paul giving those painful expression. It was just a cool scene. Also enjoyed his ground crawling and his predator mode as he followed them.

It appears Caleb may have been a viking as his weapon looks like a viking ax. This is the best fight so far in the series. Caleb ends up using Duncan's sword, and Duncan ends up using Caleb's ax. They're in the water fighting. Awesome moment when Duncan stops and hold Caleb's arm as he swings the sword, stopping him cold, then Duncan swings the ax and takes his head.

This episode also features Duncan with his best built in the series. He goes shirtless for quite a long period and we see how much more muscular he is compared to the first episode. Right down to a chiseled six pack.

So here we have another held captive Tessa, and Duncan to the rescue moment. Great job by Alexandra Vandernoot with her expressions, observing and undermining the men by getting them to doubt each other, not being the "hysterical female," and instead keeping her wits about her. The actress conveyed all the right emotions. Gave the episode an 8/10.

The Beastmaster against the Highlander!!!!!!!
THE BEASTMASTER AGAINST THE HIGHLANDER!!!!!!!

------- ------- ------- Duncan has to rescue Tessa from a group of three lawless mountain men that are already wanted by the authorities. They have kidnapped Tessa and the leader pretends to make Tessa his woman, of course, without her consent. Duncan will use everything he learned from an old friend of his that used to live in those same mountains to be able to track this group down.

One of the interesting things about this episode, is that Caleb Cole, the leader of this group and main villain in the story was performed by Marc Singer, who starred the 1982's movie "The Beastmater" and their final fight seems to be among the most famous ones in the whole HIGHLANDER SERIES.

Thanks for reading.

like seeing nature be it Canadian or anywhere.... Warning: Spoilers
There be beauty everywhere if we be willing to look (OK ya sounding "preachy" but have learned to see/look for 1 thing to well see beauty...it is in and around us all).

An unstable immortal who lost his wife, (adopted son alive but the mom dies and he seems to loose it) does care for the "boy"/young man, and somehow also has this other stray with him... if it had been just the "boy", might be a bit more reasonable but we will never know, the other stray is even more creepy and he is mortal. Doesn't seem to know about immortals (does the son kinda know ? ), so Caleb (adopted father) must not have beheaded anyone in a while, no stories of freak lighting or something. Wonder how he killed Carl, Macs friend, without the others seeing?

Tess was out looking for inspiration, these 3 decide with Caleb being the "honorable" one, "marriage" (ya hmrph but other than the scared "boy", the better of the 2 men). Well if not for her, other than Mac, no one could follow them, well till they tricked and the rest caught on and couldn't fig out how Mac follow them right in the first place, oh ya they have cause the death of at least 2 who came to arrest them.

HMM not sure but the only other review at the moment seems to again not care for the show or epi, and no again this one not the best an ya a bit predictable, but its part of its charm and you cant beat the nature scenes.

Do feel a bit for the "boy" (ya young man but still child like because of Caleb) and when he saw Mac after Mac died...it is both funny and pathetic. Wasn't sorry when Caleb killed his stray uh Eddie and ya Caleb, his time was done after the way he started to treat Tess and well his mind was "gone" and Mac did the world a fav with him gone. (OK YA MACLEOD GOOD IS GOOD, bad another story...)

happy watching

Deliverance Revisited
zeppo-21 February 2006
Marc Singer adds some acting skills to this better than average episode in this series. Playing a crazed mountain man, who also turns out to be yet another immortal, he kidnaps Tessa while she is exploring the great outdoors. Obessesed with her becoming his wife, he takes her, his adopted son and another mountain loony into the deep woods...

Cue Duncan MacLeod to become a Rambo like Hawkeye Indian tracker type and trail the baddies to a final outcome.

Again, all a bit predictable but not without interest and it's good to see some scenes away from the antique shop and abandoned warehouse/training place, that usually feature in most episodes.

Surprise surprise!
skteosk17 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Tessa's simple trip to the mountains to do some sketching ends with her being abducted by three mountain men, whose ringleader has decided she's going to be his bride. Tessa isn't keen on her new role and neither is Duncan, who heads off into the mountains in search of her.

It's Richie's turn to be left behind while the others have an adventure, only appearing in the opening scenes of the episode. This provides a larger role for Tess that many episodes, even if it does consist of being kidnapped again.

The first half of this episode is surprisingly decent. Caleb manages to rise above the cliched gravelly-voiced villain.he might have been by being quite genuine in his insistence that Tessa is under his protection and he aims to charm her into accepting her new role willingly. He and Joshua give different recollections of how they ended up together and it's curious to know where the truth lies. It's a shame this aspect fades towards the end of the episode as he starts roughing Tessa up.

The flashback of Duncan encountering a (possibly Immortal?) hermit doesn't really achieve that much except explaining how Duncan knows which way to go and giving him a dead mentor to avenge, a trope that will be used quite often throughout the series.

But then Duncan enters the A-plot and we get the badass scene of Joshua and Eddie trying to force him off a cliff only for him to casually dive off it, because he knows he can survive it. And then the magical scene when Caleb sees Duncan's sword and his eyes light up at the significance of it, and then Tessa sees Caleb's axe and realises the same. As she says, "You're one of them." It's one of the few times that the reveal of an Immortal has genuinely surprised me and suddenly the stakes are raised and this becomes a personal conflict for Duncan. (Incidentally, I believe this marks the first time the series mentions that Immortals can't have children.)

After the slaughter of the previous episode, it's nice Duncan simply leaves Joshua tied up for the sheriff: Only Cole is considered fair game here. Tessa does a good job getting in Caleb's ear about Eddie but doesn't think through the consequences, although no-one will mourn him. The final fight between Duncan and Caleb is an interesting one, with them using each other's weapons...but it takes more than a good sword to beat Duncan MacLeod!

Some quickenings are just not very valuable
danrs00000810 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Duncan defeated the immortal mountain man Caleb, but I don't think the Highlander received very much in that quickening. After all, what skills and knowledge did Caleb gain during all those years in the mountains? I'm sure he was a great hunter and yes he had tracking skills because he had beheaded Carl the Hermit, but Duncan already learned tracking directly from Carl years ago and was an experienced hunter from his years in Scotland and from his time living with his Sioux Indian wife and son. So what did Caleb have to offer? I should probably watch the episode again to see if I missed something.
