Why did the writers write Amanda so dumb in this episode? Duncan's hypocrisy and pride.

Warning: Spoilers
Amanda frees Kalas from prison so that she can kill him for Duncan. He gets away along with a psychopath companion, Nino, from prison. Duncan tries to track down Kalas. In the meantime, Joe and Methos are in Paris. The widow of Don Salzer who died in 'Methos,' Christine Salzer, is planning on telling the world the truth about immortals.

What was Amanda thinking? She has never won a fight on the show. As much as I hate it, the writers chose the write women immortals, as not good fighters or as not fighting at all. I mean Amanda had a sword and Kalas didn't, and she still couldn't kill him. To top it off two prison guards were killed. Why did they write Amanda so dumb? Oh yeah, she's a woman, and the writers seemed to have less than stellar opinion of them.

Now in contrast to this, we have Duncan who is furious that Amanda freed Kalas and tried to kill him for him. However, let's not forget that although he doesn't want anyone to fight for him, he's perfectly ok to fight other immortal's battles such as against Luther from 'Legacy' in season 2. That should have been Amanda's fight and win. I wrote a review on that so I won't get into it, but this is another example of Duncan's hypocrisy. And yes, I know Amanda is not a good fighter. I blame the writers.

Why didn't Kalas just commit "suicide," in order to get out of jail? Is it because he recovers so fast from death. It was only a minute or two before he came back to life in the prison yard after Nino "killed" him. I wonder if the more quickenings and older the age of the immortal, the quicker the healing is and recovering from wounds and death? They never really explain the details of this as sometimes immortal recover fast, sometimes slow. Kinda inconsistent at times.

They have a flashback to 1653 Algiers. Duncan is with an immortal friend, Hamza. Xavier is back in the flashback. He wants to fight Hamza. Duncan learns a lesson. Hamza knew he couldn't beat Xavier and wanted to leave, but Duncan wanted to stay and fight Xavier. Hamza came back and fought Xavier so that Duncan wouldn't be killed. Hamza: "Because I cannot allow a friend to die in my place." Basically young cocky Duncan inadvertently got his friend killed as Xavier killed Hamza.

Duncan to Hamza: "You're going to run?" I believe this goes against Duncan pride even today. I believe running is anathema to Duncan. This is why Duncan never runs and/or changes his name and tries to hide his whereabouts. It's his pride.

It was nice seeing Xavier again. But he was just a hunter here. I would have loved it more if he were up to one of his deadly schemes. He was very A to B, though he had some good lines mocking Duncan.

Duncan knowing Xavier here is an inconsistency. In season 1 episode 15, 'For Tomorrow We Die', Duncan flashes back to WWI when he first met Xavier. Later he says to Tessa in that episode: "Told him what exactly? That I met Xavier in 1917 and he was wearing a gas mask, but I'm not quite sure?"

I was amazed that the writers actually wrote Amanda as being able to escape, instead of having Duncan come to her rescue.

C'mon Joe. You've always been a smart guy. Duncan was trying to save you. Why did the writers dumb down Joe here?

I gave the episode an 8/10
