It's confusing. Writers imply Duncan is insane given the scenes with Sean. Yet he had a dark quickening which made him seem possessed and magic holy water exorcised him.

Warning: Spoilers
In part 2 of the dark quickening saga, Duncan is in France. He causes a lot of trouble there and connects with an old immortal friend, Sean. Sean is a psychologist. Duncan flashes back to 1917 France where Sean psychoanalyzes a young soldier having a violent episode, and Sean talks him down, getting inside his head. In present-day Evil Duncan meets up with Sean and things don't go well. In the meantime, Methos is trying to help Duncan.

Why didn't Methos dump Duncan in the holy spring right from the beginning? It would have saved a whole lot of trouble.

Wow, Duncan really targeted that Captain Davis didn't he? And his wife? I wonder if Duncan ever made an apology or amends to these people later on? Did anyone even bother calling the police? Captain Davis or his wife? The young couple Duncan assaulted and whose car he stole? I guess all these things are plot holes.

I'm confused by the Sean thing. Duncan had a dark quickening, right? But now the show seems to be saying he's gone insane. Yet later Duncan is purged of the dark quickening by going in the magical holy spring. This implies there is a good vs evil thing happening almost like Duncan is possessed. So, therefore, it is not a mental illness situation right? See the conundrum here?

Methos - "You can fight this. I can help you if you let me."

Duncan - "Yeah? Why would you want to do that?"

Methos - "Because of who you are. You're too important to lose!"

This goes back to my theory that Methos believes that Duncan is "the one." What does Methos as Adam Pierson do anyway in The Watchers organization? I mean I know he makes an entry or two every now and then to suggest what Methos is doing. But otherwise? To me not only does it give him the perfect opportunity to see where other immortals are so he can avoid them, but it also gives him the opportunity to study them in order to figure out potential candidates for "the one."

Duncan seemed too perky after he was exorcised, didn't he? I mean, after all that happened and given that he nearly killed Richie, plus had no choice but to kill his friend, Coltec, and later killed his good friend Sean in cold blood, plus terrorizing a bunch of other people, he just seemed too damn cheerful!

I didn't need to see Rachel again. Headdesk.

I liked some parts of this episode. The flashback which by the way, is about a year before the flashback in the episode 'The Colonel.' So good continuation showing Mac as a medic. I loved that Methos went well beyond the extra mile to help Duncan. Mac owes him bigtime. I enjoyed some of evil Duncan's moments.

The problem is Mac is simply not an evil person who grows and learns he was wrong and tries to change his ways. Instead, it's all magic. Magic fixed him! It seems like a weak quick fix to get him out of this mess. Supernatural stuff was just never done well in the series.

Also, I felt the writers got carried away and elevated him into a Jesus level of importance. That just seemed arrogant to me, no matter how much I like the character and want him to be "the one." To top off we get stuck with Rachel at the end who was never likable and has zero chemistry with Mac. I gave the episode a 7/10.

Cheap writing

Poor writing technique. First introduce a totally new previously unheard of conflict mechanism. Then introduce an equally unheard of mechanism as a rescue device at the last minute. Then oversell the nobility of the hero which conveniently plays into the rescue mechanism.

The product turns out pretty well but big penalty for the cheap trick.
