Duncan and Joe arrive back home at the airport. Duncan senses another immortal, Cord, who is shot and "killed" by a masked sniper. Duncan goes after the sniper. Joe goes to get the immortal out of there. It turns out Joe knows the immortal from Vietnam. The mask sniper Duncan chases down turns out to be Charlie.
Loved the flashback of young Joe. The actor that played him, man what a good actor! To top it off his looks really resemble Jim Byrnes. We see how Joe lost his legs and how he became a watcher. The character, Ian Bancroft, who first appeared in 'They Also Serve,' is in this episode. He's the one that introduced Joe to the Watchers.
After watching this episode again, I think they could have made a spin-off about the Watchers with young Joe and Ian Bancroft. I picture Joe working for an organization that wasn't quite trustworthy. I love the idea of it taking place in the '60s and '70s. They could have even had Joe's brother-in-law Horton, in it. Too bad the show never did it. I wish they could have had the actor back as young Joe back in more flashbacks.
Did anyone else enjoy seeing the soldier that raped the Vietnamese woman, get his karma? I know I did.
Cord was kind of hard to figure out. His moral code is twisted. He killed that woman in Vietnam to protect the brotherhood. But then he saves Joe life. In present time, his character continues not to make sense. If his business was to sell arms to people, wouldn't he want a good reputation in order to generate more deals? Yet he's selling weapons that don't work?
I wonder if Duncan hadn't requested that meeting with Cord at Joe's if things would have still turned out so bad. I felt like that sort of triggered Cord. I know he told Duncan that he was trying to draw out Charlie in order to take him out, but it sounded more like Cord was baiting Duncan so that he would fight him. I mean Cord was an immortal. Probably hundreds of years old. Why would he care about Charlie? The character wasn't well written. He started off interesting in the flashback with some layers, but then the writers wanted to go full villain with him in order for Duncan to go after him.
The actor that played Cord, Wolfgang Bodison, was sexy and charismatic and did a really great job in the role. Too bad they reduced Cord's couple of layers into one.
Poor Charlie. The writers never found the feet of this character. Seems like he only existed to so that Duncan would lose a friend and how that would affect him. Should Mac have told Charlie the truth? Yeah probably, but I think if Charlie knew the truth he would have gone after Cord with a sword and still ended up dead.
So what about Joe asking Mac to leave Cord alone? From Joe's perspective, I can understand. I really do think Duncan made things worse by wanting to meet with Cord. Joe was devastated when Duncan broke off their friendship. I always felt Joe had a man-crush on Duncan. As I said in an earlier review it must have been like a little boy fantasy hanging with Mac, sort of like if one could hang with Batman or Superman. I felt bad for Joe and didn't see this as his fault, tho I think he was naive about Cord.
I gave the episode and 9/10
