"The Evans Get Involved" continues its third chapter with Mrs. Carpenter (Kathleen Doyle) still searching for the missing Penny Gordon (Janet Jackson), whose mother (Chip Fields, later seen in "A Matter of Mothers") has packed up and left. Fortunately, Penny has managed to sneak back to the Evans apartment for a snack, her mother Linella not far behind. Linella's tale of woe includes being abused by her own family when she was a child, eventually abandoning her daughter: "she deserves something better than me." Rather than sleep with her hero JJ, Penny stays with Willona but requests a bedtime story about 'Afrolocks and the Three Bears!' The girl's sweet nature compels her to include her abusive mother in her prayers as Mrs. Carpenter endeavors to find her a new home.
