"The Evans Get Involved" finishes the second half of this one hour broadcast, the Evans family realizing that the burns on little Penny Gordon (Janet Jackson) were inflicted by her unwed mother Linella (Chip Fields). Penny is invited to attend the carnival chaired by Michael, and duets with him as Sonny and Cher, while JJ dons a spaceman costume: "I am Captain JJ from the planet Ghetto, I'm straight as an arrow and right on course, don't mess with me cause I am known as the force!" Willona and JJ wind up taking Penny to the hospital, her arm badly bruised, but with no evidence to confirm her mother as the abuser everyone's hands are tied. Mrs. Carpenter (Kathleen Doyle) from the Department of Children and Family Services interviews Willona and the Evans about Penny, but unfortunately arrive too late to prevent her from disappearing with her mother. Stymie Beard makes his fifth and final series appearance as hospital patient Mr. Edwards, who kindly gives up his appointment to the injured Penny.
