"JJ the Teacher" finds JJ teaching his own art class in the Evans apartment, as Florida returns home from her bus driving job to yet another childish argument (we learn that Thelma was born on June 18 1957). Florida remains adamant that JJ continue for the added income, despite his having only two students, the shapely Donna (Rose Parrish) and the talented Earl Mitchell (Ernest Harden). Thelma would rather her husband Keith avoid Donna by taking him to a Peter Falk movie, allowing for his Columbo impression. Earl's father Frank (Hal Williams) does not approve of his son's art lessons, a construction worker who has little time to spend with the boy. Bookman laughs at JJ's misfortune: "an art class with no students...that means you ain't got no class!" JJ responds to his suggestion to model: "look Bookman, I don't paint landscapes!" Earl enjoys painting so much that he defies his father to come back, and eventually Frank sees the light.
