From zero to hero

Love and appreciate animation even more now than as a child with my knowledge having (hopefully) broadened, extending Disney, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry and coming across some very overlooked foreign animation (Russian animation for example deserves more attention). As well as more things being noticeable through young adult eyes not as obvious before. Not that there is any bias as there is terrible animation out there and ones that significantly lose their appeal on adult re-watch.

'Ducktales' was one of those personal favourites and not an example of terrible animation. Luckily it still is and actually love it even more now, it is always a relief when a childhood favourite does hold up (not all have). It captivated me as a child and to this day it's among the best shows Disney ever did and have ever done. Making one pine for the classic Disney and the quality of the animated shows they had in the 80s and 90s, as they sure, with exceptions, don't make them like this anymore. It strikes me as a show that is even funnier, more entertaining, more colourful and more inventive as a young adult.

"Hero for Hire" is a wonderful episode, as far as Ducktales episodes go it is in the better half and it is for me easily one of the best Launchpad-centric ones.

Launchpad himself is a very interesting and wholly likeable character here, up to this point of 'Ducktales' this is him at his most interesting and most developed. Have always found him an amusing and endearing character, but here he is very easy to feel sorry for and found myself relating to him too actually in his situation and his good intentions, anybody who's been there themselves would. His bumbling and causing of problems is not overdone in "Hero for Hire" like has been the case with a few Launchpad-centric episodes which was appreciated. The Beagle Boy and Ma Beagle are as ever hilarious and also suitably villainous and haven't liked Doofus more than in this episode and comes over as a true friend. Scrooge's subplot is well done too, don't be put off by disliking him for his initial treatment of Launchpad, his regret rings true and he becomes increasingly human.

The story is a thrilling one, very fun and has genuine heart and emotion too. Complete with a climactic moment that makes one gasp and start to well up, one that is pretty gutsy for Disney animated shows back then. The script is smart and full of entertaining moments that never come over as juvenile, Lauchpad's hilarious banter and the film shooting scenes especially.

Animation in "Hero for Hire" looks very pleasing on the eyes, nothing shoddy about it. Instead it is very vibrant, fluidly drawn and the attention to detail in the backgrounds is also note-worthy. Can say nothing wrong about the music, the score is dynamic, beautifully orchestrated, never jarring with the action and full of energy. Just as animated shows of this kind should be. It is impossible to resist or forget the theme song, one of the catchiest in animation and ever. The voice acting is terrific from especially Terence McGovern.

In conclusion, wonderful. 10/10
