I really like this episode. Season 4 is clearly not my favorite, and I would rank it above season 5, which is the worst of the series, for me. But it has some great episodes, the movie references, and that self awareness I love so much about Dawson's Creek. Even though Jen is missing, Drew is here. And to be honest, I really like the way he calls these characters out on their shtick. Characters who became huge phonies there. Maybe that's why I dislike this season. Too much characters assassination, like in season 3... Thankfully there are interesting and compelling new characters too. Apart from Drew, you have Gretchen, who's the perfect rite of passage for Dawson, and whose relationship with him has her finding closure in past regrets. Great couple, that is never crystallized like Joey and Pacey were... It even made me tolerate the Dawson character more. The infamous letter was the cutest thing, no wonder she melted. Only it's not « read » under that beautiful Splender song anymore... You also have Mr. Brooks, who's clearly what Dawson still has a chance of not becoming. And he's the second push he needed in his life to evolve as a man. All in all, it's a decent season, but Joey and Pacey drag the pace down, with their over the top angst. Tell me again why she never got together with Drew?...
