Way back in 2005 I can remember refusing to go out because of this show, Afterlife made Saturday Night TV a reason to stay in, in front of the box.
The first episode really does set the tone for the next batch of episodes and subsequent second series. I can remember seeing the ITV drama trailer for it, and being intrigued by the beautiful filming and music. The episode is such a contradiction, it is so perfectly shot, so melancholy, featuring the most gorgeous music, and yet it deals with the most tragic and harrowing subject.
It's so clever how two people from two totally different, and opposing worlds collide, the tragedy comes from the person caught up in the middle of it. The story is tragic and haunting, but in a weird way it's rather beautiful.
Andrew Lincoln was well known for Teachers and of course This Life, not just a hunky actor, but a talent as well, he was excellent as the sceptic Psychologist. The show does of course belong to Sharp, she is just magical in this episode, her acting is so understated, so subtle, and yet so brilliant.
What a start! 10/10
